Plenty extraction option, scalable, but large data reduces performance
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of Denodo are the extraction option for adapters, and there are many things for the views, that are cached. Denodo is not storing the data, it looks first to tune the query, and these things are for the agents."
  • "Denodo can improve usage management-related aspects. If you deal with the mini views, it gets stuck. The performance is very slow when we go with a large number of views and high volume."

What is our primary use case?

Denodo can be deployed on-premise or in the cloud.

Denodo is used mostly for creating the views and for cache enablement for remote table creations and for pushing the view into the target DBs. The solution can extract data from multiple sources, schedule, create the views, and push them to the target.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Denodo are the extraction option for adapters, and there are many things for the views, that are cached. Denodo is not storing the data, it looks first to tune the query, and these things are for the agents.

What needs improvement?

Denodo can improve usage management-related aspects. If you deal with the mini views, it gets stuck. The performance is very slow when we go with a large number of views and high volume.

In a future release of Denodo, they could add more features, such as remote tables and metadata for views.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Denodo for approximately two years.

Good data catalogs for data anonymization, and the technical support if fantastic
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is Data Catalogs."
  • "The dropdown menus feel antiquated to me, and the administrative portals need improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I am a consultant for an organization.

We are using this solution for data anonymization, and then the particular use case that's of an advantage is the chain of custody of data. That is something that is really critical today, in breaking down that barrier.

Data can remain where it is and still be shared.

How has it helped my organization?

Agility due to personal empowerment of our analytics professionals

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is Data Catalogs.

What I like about them is that there's a breakout, a functional component of other large enterprise systems, which makes it much more usable.

What needs improvement?

The dropdown menus feel antiquated to me, and the administrative portals need improvement.

In the next release, I would like to see a better user experience and the interface needs modernization.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a year and a half.

We are using version 7, but it's 8 now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't had any experience scaling it, but it's certainly a scalable platform.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is fantastic as far as availability and advice. I would give them the highest rating. I have had no trouble getting ahold of them and they have offered a lot of free advice.

They are really good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Net new.

How was the initial setup?

Because it's an enterprise system, it was both straightforward and complex. There is no such thing as not complex for an enterprise.

It took some months for a POC.

What about the implementation team?

I am the consultant, so I do the strategy and then we hire out the different implementers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know the actual cost, but it's tens of thousands of dollars per month.

It's an ongoing license similar to a bandwidth license. It's not priced like that, it's priced on a core, but it's a bandwidth license.

The pricing is okay, as it's less costly than other options. They could probably charge more if they wanted to.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

This solution checked all of the boxes so we committed to it for proof of concept.

What other advice do I have?

They're an industry leader for an emergent layer, and they don't sell you everything else associated with it.

There are not very many competitors.

I would suggest to get on with the proof of concept with it, and then if it doesn't work, you can back away from it with very little pain.

You can scale up and get on with it.

We have found that all of the competitors have a series of products that would cost a great deal more.

I just became a partner as a consultant. I went through the partner training very recently.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: Looking to become partner to add onto our data and analytic strategy consulting.

Good virtualization and data catalog features with strong technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a go-to tool for data virtualization. The virtualization and data catalog are the features of why we chose Denodo."
  • "The data catalog certainly has room for improvement. It is functional but we look forward to development. We are in constant contact with Denodo and they are fully aware of our needs."

What is our primary use case?

We use an entirely on-premises deployment model. Our primary use case of this solution is for the virtualization or unification of a data interface that produces national statistics.

What is most valuable?

It is a go-to tool for data virtualization. The virtualization and data catalog are the features of why we chose Denodo.

What needs improvement?

The data catalog certainly has room for improvement. It is functional but we look forward to development. We are in constant contact with Denodo and they are fully aware of our needs.

I'd like to see an improvement to data catalog functionality which would immensely increase the value of this product.

In our organization, when we have to analyze a lot of data, the possibility to represent the very meaning of data to the analysts, which is actually the functionality of data catalog, is very important. Denodo is very good at creating unified access to data. It's not that good yet, in the integration of the semantics of the data, in determining what the data means. In a statistics organization, the integration with a metadata system is extremely important. That's the reason why we have found a way to integrate our metadata system with Denodo data catalog. It's easy to imagine much more functionality and we know that Denodo is fully aware of that. Denodo is improving its data catalog functionality as a result. It's not to say that we are not satisfied with the existing one but we'd like to see improvements.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is absolutely stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable but not for all the purposes. Denodo still has some more performance improvements that we do not use as we don't need them but otherwise, Denodo is scalable.

We do have intentions to increase users.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have a contract with their support. We are in constant contact with them as we handled the implementation by ourselves and so, we had a lot of questions which all got answered. Tech support is certainly one of their strong points.

One thing which is very important along with it is that, if needed, the end customers, like us, have access to the very developers. It means that our support requests are not only handled by some anonymous tech support representative but, if we find some bug, we are able to contact the very high-level developers to get our requests handled.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't have any other data virtualization tools available. Denodo was one of our first options when we were evaluating solutions and luckily we were able to close a deal at a reasonable price level.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup has two parts. The technical setup is very easy and the functional setup needs a lot of work, but this cannot be avoided because of the very nature of data virtualization. You have to technically describe all of your data sources, how to access them, where they are situated and so on. The amount of work is substantial, not overwhelming but substantial. Denodo has made it as simple as it's reasonably possible to expect. We are happy with the level of sophistication.

Deployment is an ongoing process. It is going on right now. If you have new data sources, you have to describe and set them up. As we have lots of data sources due to the very nature of our activities, as a national statistics organization, we have lots of data and we are setting up additional data sources every single day. The implementation is still ongoing but there is nothing wrong with that. It's the nature of the platform.

What about the implementation team?

In our area, there is no reseller yet. We purchased the license directly and we have been using the professional services authorized by Denodo, as a one-year support contract. It's extremely useful and of great value. We did not use outside resources due to two reasons. One of them is that we don't have any and the other reason is that, we didn't need, as Denodo is extremely helpful.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We made an internal analysis of available blind spots inside our organization and of our business needs and platform needs. We eliminated all competing platforms. We took a close look at many platforms but Denodo was the only one that fit all our requirements.

What other advice do I have?

If you have the business needs for data visualization which is a core technology that Denodo represents, then, I would say to go for it as the platform really works well. Don't have too high expectations on data catalog functionality. It works, but, its current implementation is rather rudimental. I would recommend it to others. For us, it is a success story.

I would rate it a nine out of ten. Not a ten only because I am hesitant to give a perfect score.

Good data lineage features and it is stable, but the support needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are data lineage and the concept of a semantic layer."
  • "The support is not the best and should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I am a consultant and I use Denodo for my clients.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are data lineage and the concept of a semantic layer.

What needs improvement?

The support is not the best and should be improved.

In the future, I would like to see a different structure for how they manage the data sources and connectors. Having a better data lineage tool would also be an improvement.

Better audit capabilities would be a useful enhancement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Denodo for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Denodo has been stable so far.

How are customer service and technical support?

Everything from the initial support for questions, all the way through to ongoing support once you're live with the product, needs improvement.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have worked with lots of other tools that do different things, but not data virtualization.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing should be improved, as the cost per connector is quite expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at other tools including Data Virtuality, Alteryx, and AWS Datahub.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is considering Denodo is to investigate it first. Download a free copy from the AWS Marketplace and really test it before you embark on your projects. Ensure that it meets your requirements, no just in the short-term, but in the long-term.

This is one of the better products on the market.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Centralized sources and mapping is a leading feature, provides great traceability
Pros and Cons
  • "It allows a lot of traceability and you can decide what data you want to collect"
  • "Documentation needs to be improved"

What is our primary use case?

We're building a case for data virtualization for people to use this solution in order to assist in problem solving. We don't sell the product, we partner with Denodo and I am an ETL and senior consultant.

What is most valuable?

This solution is a really good way to get all your sources organized when there are data problems and things are scattered everywhere. You have some flat files, some databases and it's all over the place. This provides one central place for all those connected to carry out governance and build up the views and type of information that need to be extracted. It's like a whiteboard in the sense that it helps you to map things. You can then build on top of it.

It also allows a lot of traceability and you can decide what data you want to collect from each space without moving the data itself, you're just doing the visualization. I believe it can solve a lot of problems for businesses.

What needs improvement?

Documentation needs to be improved, they need to lift their game. Finding information is difficult. I'm doing the training and they provide courses but it could be improved.

I haven't tested the solution for long enough to be able to suggest any additional features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for a couple of months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For now, I'm using the solution in training. I believe it's okay, I haven't had any glitches or errors.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good, you can map any source in it and get them all connected in one software.

How are customer service and technical support?

They have a community portal that helps with questions but sometimes the support is lacking and not user friendly.

What other advice do I have?

I haven't used a similar tool so I can't compare it to anything. I think it's a good product, despite some minor issues.

I would rate this solution an eight out of 10.

Has good performance and quick speed to market
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance and the speed to market are the most valuable features of this solution."
  • "The integration could use improvement, it's a lot of non-speed line processes that we have discovered, in the country. The configurations could use a lot more improvement."

What is our primary use case?

It was used for an integration tool setup to follow and as temporary housing of integration lens.

What is most valuable?

The performance and the speed to market are the most valuable features of this solution.

What needs improvement?

The integration could use improvement, it's a lot of non-speed line processes that we have discovered, in the country. The configurations could use a lot more improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have worked with Denodo for around eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

When we went live there were certain small little issues, but nothing that would stop production, so from our side, we don't have any blocks that could stop us from doing anything, merely minor little incidents and irritations.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to scale if you've got the finance.

How are customer service and technical support?

We always went to the vendor for technical support. The vendor had an outgoing ticket line to the actual author of the product.

We contacted support through the vendor. They responded quickly.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was as simple as you could make it be in the complex environment that we have.

From kick-off to the completion of the configuration, it took around two to three months.

What about the implementation team?

We had assistance from POC Professionals from the vendor and thereafter we did it on our own as a team that consisted within the company.

We have a dedicated team for the maintenance for this specific product.

In terms of the amount of users, there were quite a few. We looked at this departmentally, so we rolled it out to around three or four departments.

It is used on a daily basis, as it was a replacement for the integration layer so it had to be used daily.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing costs cost extra.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to someone considering this solution would be to understand your own personalized environment and out of the box configuration settings of Denodo.

Our next journey would be to the cloud. That was the only thing that we were looking at embarking upon, but obviously, within a big corporation, we need to do due diligence from our side. I think Denodo had already the features to be integrated into the cloud we needed to do our homework to make sure that we could onboard the cloud with certainty.

I would rate Denodo an eight out of ten.

A good virtualization solution, but comes with a high price-point and requires development to be universally user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "This solution provides us with the ability to sync data, and make it available for anyone to use across the business."
  • "We would like this solution to be more universally user-friendly. At present it is really only aimed at IT specialists."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use this solution to virtualize items that are stored on old node servers.

What is most valuable?

This solution provides us with the ability to sync data, and make it available for anyone to use across the business.

What needs improvement?

We would like this solution to be more universally user-friendly. At present it is really only aimed at IT specialists.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with this solution for a year now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the on-premises version of this solution to be very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable, but it is expensive to do so currently.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution was easy and straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing charges for this solution are payable annually.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reasonable pricing, good data integration, and pretty stable
Pros and Cons
  • "Overall, the product works quite well and has a good set of features."
  • "We occasionally have some integration issues that we need to work through."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the product for data virtualization and visualization. We actually have it integrated with some other virtualization tools as well. We design the systems and hand them over to our customers.

What is most valuable?

The price is fantastic. The cost is reasonable for what is offered.

Overall, the product works quite well and has a good set of features.

Their integration capabilities with data are great. The solution can integrate different types of data quite easily.

What needs improvement?

In our country, we do have to get the training and do the end-to-end delivery, and that can be a bit hectic when it comes to customer systems development. We need a bit more external support from the company. Support has been a real issue for us.

We occasionally have some integration issues that we need to work through.

In terms of features, et cetera, I don't know if there is anything really missing from that perspective. We are also new to this product. We have to analyze it and other products and that process often takes some time. It's not fair to comment on what's missing without surveying the entire landscape.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been dealing with the solution for about two years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't had any complaints from our clients in relation to stability. It must be good, otherwise, we would have heard of issues surrounding crashes or glitches.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, the solution has some integration requirements. People are writing different types of code so sometimes there can be issues related to that. However, compared to other comparable products they are relatively good at integrating.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've been disappointed with the level of technical support, particularly on the outset. We need more training and so do our customers. This is lacking. We're not completely satisfied with the level of service provided to us.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a bit new to us and it can be a bit complex. Having customer support that could assist us more effectively would be helpful in easing the process.

The deployment process depends on the client and their requirements (such as the number of data fields required). It can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

What about the implementation team?

We'd like to have more technical support during the implementation process, however, they don't seem to offer too much assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While the pricing is expensive, it's still a fair price for the offering. Of course, we always want to pay less where we can.

What other advice do I have?

We are local partners. We have a business relationship with Denodo.

We would recommend the product overall.

On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate it at an eight. If they improved their integration capabilities and used some standard integration interfaces, I would mark them higher. If they offered more training and support, I'd mark them higher still.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud
