The purpose is basically to work in a somewhat different environment. We are using it for the failover and the load balancing and to control the traffic.
Associate Manage IT at FMCG Company
Great failover capabilities, good pricing, and reliable
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup is easy."
- "The bulk efficiencies and the control of traffic could be a bit better."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The web availability is great. The failover is excellent.
The stability is good.
The solution is reasonably priced.
What needs improvement?
The bulk efficiencies and the control of traffic could be a bit better. There are many servers on the firewall we have to be aware of.
We’d like the cloud router to have an MPLS and to make sure all the latest protocols are available on the newest routers. They need to have more facility for cloud servers and local environments.
There are hardware limitations that you just don’t have to deal with if you go with a solution like Cisco.
For how long have I used the solution?
I’ve been using the solution for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
MikroTik is the most stable device. It’s easy to configure. It’s not difficult like other firewalls and other routers. There are no bugs or glitches. It’s reliable and the performance is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have 340 people using it in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
We never used technical support and therefore I can't speak to how their services are. I have enough knowledge myself to be able to design everything.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I also am familiar with Cisco.
We chose this product as it fits our requirements and we have a different type of environment. We are using the small MikroTik Router for our branches. On the branch side, we have multiple VLANs. We have to configure multiple environments like the video and the data. It is easy to configure and easy to manage the device. We do not require additional hardware the way we would with Cisco. If you have a Cisco router, you can configure the ports, and, after that, you have to put in some Cisco switches and you have to configure the VLANs and so on. The MikroTik solution is an independent solution and with each port, we can configure it according to your requirements.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is easy. It's not difficult. First I make a map, and office menu, and then I design everything] according to the network, according to the requirements.
The deployment took approximately one to two days maximum. Obviously, it would depend on the requirements of an organization.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is less than Cisco. In Pakistan, if you buy this cloud router, it's approximately $700 for the device.
The best advantage of this device is the one-time lifetime licensing. On other solutions, you need to keep paying.
What other advice do I have?
We are a customer, not a partner.
I’m not sure which version we’re using. We're using the cloud base. It's an IP cloud, a MikroTik IP Cloud.
I’d advise new users to create a map of the environment before the configuration. They have to design the map and then they have to configure everything. They need to also choose their router according to their unique requirements. If they have the heavy requirements, they must have to use a better model. If you have a net requirement, a small setup, you have to buy the smaller routers.
I’d rate the solution seven out of ten based on the hardware limitations on offer.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

Azure cloud support engineer at Tek Experts
Simple with a user-friendly interface and good reliability
Pros and Cons
- "It is easy to set up."
- "Technical support could be better."
What is our primary use case?
I primarily use the solution for easy security and access.
How has it helped my organization?
The IT team doesn't need to be on-site to be able to know what is going on within the site, who is logging in what a particular device is, and the resources they're consuming on the internet space. That was why they needed something that has a cloud-enabled feature for them to be able to manage the site. They achieved that, actually.
What is most valuable?
The simplicity of how one can set it up is the most valuable aspect. It's unlike Cisco. With Cisco devices, you have to go to the command-line interface to type the command. A MikroTik Router also has a command-line interface where there are options, just a user-friendly interface where you can click on some button and just type in some things and get done. You don't have to worry about remembering commands, on what line to put your command, or where to write a command. That's the feature I like.
It is easy to set up.
The solution is stable.
It's scalable.
What needs improvement?
I've not really tested it on an enterprise environment. Here you have a large number of users access sending the internet through it. With Cisco, they've tried on that aspect building a strong device that can contain a large number of users in an enterprise environment. I would suggest that MikroTik Router should build their devices to meet enterprise standards.
Technical support could be better.
I'd like their devices to communicate with one another. For instance, if I have a MikroTik Cloud Router in location A and I also have it in the location B and also in location C, I want the situation where these three routers are able to communicate together-
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for about three or four months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
For our size of organization it's a stable solution. They would need to improve the enterprise environment. However, for the environment I've installed now, it's stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's my understanding that the solution is scalable.
It was set up specifically for the IT team to be able to monitor the access and who is on-site. Our customer has 50 users on the solution currently. There are ten users per department.
How are customer service and support?
I encountered a challenge during the port-forwarding. I had to do a data link, and I discovered they have a forum, a community, where you can log in your complaints or challenges and get someone to respond to them. However, the response rate is not that good compared to what I see from Cisco. With Cisco, you have a lot of people on the platform once you lodge a complaint and get a response. Here, the response rate wasn't that great, though I later got the feedback from them.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also work with Cisco.
With Cisco products and the cloud aspect of them, I've not been able to do everything I've needed. However, in the normal Cisco Router, I've worked with, it's okay. It's nice. It's pretty secure. The challenge is remembering the codes for the CLI commands. That's the only challenge.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is pretty straightforward. I'd rate it a four out of five in terms of ease of use.
The deployment only takes a matter of days. We simply had different resources to link together. It typically takes between one and five days.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The licensing cost was handled by the project manager. I can't speak to the exact cost. It's my understanding that it is less expensive than Cisco.
What other advice do I have?
I'm an integrator.
Before I put all my recommendations to the person, I would like to know the person's budget and the environment where the router will be used. If it makes sense, I would recommend this solution.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Managing Director at Behold IT
Offers good performance and an easy setup but needs security improvements
Pros and Cons
- "The performance has been good."
- "The solution does not yet offer a SaaS version."
What is our primary use case?
We're doing our IP assigning through all the IP ranges on our segment, through MikroTik.
What is most valuable?
The solution works very well for us.
The performance has been good and it's been stable for now.
To some degree, the solution can scale.
The initial setup was straightforward.
What needs improvement?
The security will always be a priority for our network infrastructure. Right now, we're not using VLAN and we want to use VLAN, so it's more of a physical LAN network and we want to move towards VLAN and have a layer three VLAN network systems and use proper switches to give us the security that we need. And also, obviously, we want to open our network in a more centralized way. We hope the solution will be able to help with this in the future.
The solution does not yet offer a SaaS version.
Technical support could be better.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've used the solution for a while. We've likely used it for seven years or so.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. It offers good performance. There are no bugs or glitches. it doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable for us overall.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Obviously, it has to be scalable to some degree, however, there's going to be a ceiling as, in a place where most of the employees are now working from home, or the hybrid environment that we're supplying, it should be more scalable to some degree. In terms of what we need and what we see, if we can purchase this as a platform as a service going forward, it would be great as it would allow us to scale to those off-site.
We have just over 200 staff on the solution currently. I'm not sure if we have a plan to increase usage in the future.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support needs to be faster and more and more knowledgeable. Overall, they just need to be a bit better.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also deal with NETGEAR. I've also used Lynksys in the past.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It's not overly complex. I cannot recall, however, how long it took to implement.
We have about five people on staff that can handle any maintenance that may be required.
What about the implementation team?
We handled the implementation with the help of some third parties. We used some internet service providers, for example.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
When we got the product, we didn't have any subscription except for a firewall, which we paid three years in advance. In terms of the MikroTik itself, however, there aren't any subscriptions that we have to pay. We paid for these outright.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I've been quite happy with this solution and therefore have not looked into other options.
What other advice do I have?
We are basically an end-user of the solution.
I'd cautiously recommend the solution to others. It's not intelligent, however, it does work. I'd rate it at a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Owner at It logic
Easy to configure, scalable, and the GUI makes it easy to use
Pros and Cons
- "The GUI is easy to use."
- "If MikroTik had a marketing team and support team in India then it would be much easier for us to get the product, as well as support."
What is our primary use case?
We are a reseller and this is one of the products that we implement for our customers. It is a GUI-based router used as part of a corporate-level network infrastructure.
What is most valuable?
This product is easy to configure.
The GUI is easy to use.
When an update is released it is easy to download and install.
What needs improvement?
If MikroTik had a marketing team and support team in India then it would be much easier for us to get the product, as well as support.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this product for the last five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable product and we plan to continue selling it in the future.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We use this product in small or medium-scale corporations. We have companies with up to 10,000 users.
How are customer service and technical support?
In India, there is no distributor for MikroTik so there is no direct technical support. However, we don't need support because it is easy to use.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward. It takes perhaps ten minutes to deploy.
What about the implementation team?
We did the implementation ourselves.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This product has a one-time cost and there is no licensing fee. This is unlike Cisco.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The MikroTik Cloud Router Switch is good but as a brand name, Cisco is always number one. This is why we use Cisco, rather than MikroTik, for banking applications. On the other hand, I would rate MikroTik a five-star rating for configuration, whereas I would rate Cisco with one star.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Good firewall capability, and the mangle feature is useful
Pros and Cons
- "There are a lot of features to control permitting or stopping packets in the network."
- "Antispam and antivirus features should be included in the future."
What is our primary use case?
We are a solution provider and this is one of the products that we implement for our clients.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the mangle.
The firewall is very good. There are a lot of features to control permitting or stopping packets in the network.
What needs improvement?
Support for intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) is needed.
Antispam and antivirus features should be included in the future.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with this product for about 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This product is not recommended for enterprise-level projects. We have approximately 50 users in our company who use it.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is okay.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have also worked with similar solutions from Cisco, Fortinet, and Juniper.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price is very good.
What other advice do I have?
I think that Mikrotik is the best solution for SOHO and small businesses because the price is very good and it includes a lot of features. For larger companies, I would recommend a different product, perhaps by Cisco.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Useful in managing core routers and client-side routing to the internet
Pros and Cons
- "It's a well-rounded solution for routing."
- "The initial setup is complex."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case for this solution is managing core routers for our ISP business and client-side routing to the internet. We deploy the solution via DCs and on-premises.
What is most valuable?
We value the solution's price, and it can do almost anything you need regarding routing. So it's a well-rounded solution for routing, especially for network routing.
What needs improvement?
The solution can be improved by getting the OS to work with Hyper-thread so that it uses all the CPUs and one application doesn't sit on one CPU but is managed by multiple CPUs.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using the solution for fifteen years and are currently using version OS 7.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is good. I rate it an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is good except if you are using version OS 6. However, once you begin to use version OS 7, it only uses some of the processes at a time. It doesn't thread the things but instead uses them one at a time, which is a hold-back for that product. I rate the scalability a six out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
We have not had experience with customer service and support. Still, from what I know, it may be nonexistent because of the documentation and training videos, along with a lot of information on the web on how to use it. Some people had issues with it and mailed the technical support team but never heard back.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used Linux firewalls.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is complex, but it's not that complicated once you get used to it.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the solution in-house with one technical staff.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We don't have any licensing costs with MikroTik Cloud Router Switch because it is straight off the shelf, and licensing is included in the purchase price.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the solution an eight out of ten. The solution can be improved by including Hyper-threading in the next release.

Simple to configure and user-friendly but needs to add features
Pros and Cons
- "It is easy to set up the solution."
- "MikroTik needs to add some features like IPS, mail security, or antivirus, et cetera."
What is our primary use case?
I use the solution for firewalls, routing, and sometimes for wireless links, for example, wireless point-to-point links.
What is most valuable?
The firewall is very simple. It's simple to configure and is very user-friendly. It's great for small to medium companies.
It is easy to set up the solution.
The solution is stable.
What needs improvement?
MikroTik needs to add some features like IPS, mail security, or antivirus, et cetera.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for 11 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very good and quite stable. It's very good for edge networks in medium and small companies.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution isn't necessarily scalable. It's better for small or medium-sized companies and not for enterprises.
I do use the solution for many projects in companies in Iran. We have 100 to 300 users across some small companies. Occasionally, I do need to increase usage.
How are customer service and support?
I cannot get support since I am in Iran, and there are sanctions.
How was the initial setup?
The solution is very simple to set up. The entire process is very comfortable.
It might take about an hour or two to configure the solution.
What about the implementation team?
I can help with the implementation process.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed an ROI as it is very cheap.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is quite fair.
What other advice do I have?
I'd recommend the solution to smaller companies. The pricing is good and it is easy to configure.
I would rate the solution six out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

User access management is very good, but the log management software should be improved
Pros and Cons
- "The interface management and the user access management is pretty good."
- "The packet filtering, user log data, and user access log could all be improved."
What is our primary use case?
This solution is deployed on a private cloud.
What is most valuable?
The interface management and the user access management is pretty good.
What needs improvement?
The packet filtering, user log data, and user access log could all be improved.
The access log is not readable. It's supposed to be readable by using third party softwares and applications using a weblog, but I would prefer that MikroTik improve their own log management software.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for about two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's stable, but some features could be improved.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is fine. It covers many areas.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is not very good. It isn't comprehensive. You have to find solutions to issues by searching the internet and discussion forums.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution 7 out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
