Answered a question: What are viable alternatives to SAP Business Objects Enterprise?
I'd second looking into Snowflake, Big Query or Redshift for your DW (and would lean toward Snowflake). I'd also recommend doing some research on Looker. For us, and likely for some others, it has been a viable alternative to Business Objects (and Data Cubes). Tableau, while…

Answered a question: What's the best way to trial reporting tools?
All good guidance so far! A few things I'd add
1) Before you even start a POC, put together a core set of requirements, and ask vendors to complete an RFI (Request for Information) - basically a check list of capabilities as they pertain to your use cases. This will…

Commented on If you're evaluating Tableau as a potential data visualization solution, consider these points.
Hi Djalma, thanks for the link. This is a fairly simple example and I agree it's pretty easy to accomplish. I should clarify, when I say sparklines, I am speaking more of the example here. https://community.tableau.com/thread/176753. More of a table with multiple…

I've been curious to know how much Domo is actually backing up their heavy, and somewhat mysterious, marketing hype. Sounds like they're not at all! Thanks for the forthright review Scott!

Answered a question: Tableau 10: Best New/Improved Features
Yes, thanks Larry, we are one such organization and always a few releases behind. I am personally very curious about the the Join/Blend capabilities as those functions have historically been pretty limited. It becomes a "Yes you can blend, but you can't do X (create…

Answered a question: Tableau 10: Best New/Improved Features
Yes, I've seen the release notes. I'm more interested in hearing what users have actually found most valuable rather than just what Tableau is touting as their most notable improvements/enhancements. I think that is largely the value of IT Central Station. We've all seen…

Answered a question: Ad Hoc Reporting: QlikView vs. MainFrame Focus
I'd echo what Alejandro has said. It really depends on your requirements. If you're looking for primarily a reporting tool for well defined, prompt driven and/or ad hoc tabular reports with scheduling, distribution, etc..) verses a data visualization/dashboard tool, then…

Answered a question: Which BI tools are easiest for non-technical users to use?
I regularly attend local Tableau meetups where different users from the community present a particular project. These are often not individuals from a technical background or role, but work within Marketing, Finance, etc.. One of the common themes from those presentations…

Answered a question: I want to migrate from SAP BO to Tableau, is it possible?
I would say it depends on how you're using BO currently, but in most cases, Tableau is not effective as a full replacement for BO. It handles the data visualization side much better than BO, but is not intended to be an Ad Hoc/Automated report creation & distribution tool…

Thanks BIExpert221! I tend to be very weary of anyone touting a single tool as superior in all cases. I figure they're either on the payroll or incredibly myopic ;-)

I definitely plan to keep an eye on, and get more familiar with it. The tools we're using within my current employer our fairly entrenched, but I myself am not a drinker of any particular Kool-Aid ;-)

GaryM, I have just started experimenting with PowerBI. I did evaluate Powerquery/Pivot/View in my last role but at the time it had too many inter-dependencies and too many limitations when trying to build out the front end. PowerBI does look to have simplified things…

Commented on If you're evaluating Tableau as a potential data visualization solution, consider these points.
Ed, I agree! Qliksense is a great option for a smaller business without need for a server implementation (otherwise the cost starts to creep up there with the others.) We've actually used it as well for a few use cases, such as addressing the large 'table/many filters'…

Commented on If you're evaluating Tableau as a potential data visualization solution, consider these points.
Correct Rick Cale, the review is not on 9.3 as we've yet to make the upgrade as an organization, which does have some new features (Improved data blending etc.), but to my knowledge, most of what I've identified as limitations in the context of our particular use cases…

Contributed a review of Tableau: If you're evaluating Tableau as a potential data visualization solution, consider these points.

Completely agree Edwin. I currently work with both Qlikview and Tableau and the size of data is a very large factor in deciding which tool I'll use for a particular use case. Tableau generally needs some level of aggregation to perform well and that is not always an…

Ah, okay, so not massive, but more than a lot of individuals are working with! I do know that table width also plays a large part in Tableau's performance, as does any sort of data blending.

I agree with the filter functionality needing improvement. Having something similar to the 'Current Selections' box in QlikView would be very helpful for users, as I've found they can sometimes get confused as to what they have filtered down to (using Quick Filters or…

Hi All
Happy to be a part of this team! (or Squad as it were). My current role is Product Manager, Reporting & Analytics, and I've been in the BI/Analytics space for almost 15 years.
I work regularly with both Tableau and QlikView, and to a lesser extent, QlikSense,…

Answered a question: A journalist is writing a story about which Data Visualization software product to choose. Can you help him?
Hi Robert
Last year I evaluated all the tools you mentioned. If you're interested in my actual evaluation criteria, you can locate the post on my profile page. Data visualization tools all tend to get grouped under a single category, but I think they can be…

Commented on What do you like best about IT Central Station and which areas have room for improvement?
A great resource for practical, and often very impartial reviews. Other sites/forums often seem to be flooded by Vendors, who obviously have a keen interest in pushing their particular product. It's also a fantastic way to keep an eye on the overall, ever-changing, BI…

Answered a question: Spotfire vs. QlikView. What can one do which the other cannot?
I would agree with what's been stated above. Spotfire definitely has an edge in statistical analysis/data mining. If this is where the bulk of your requirements lay, then it's likely a better choice. But Qlikview is a more flexible dashboard tool overall. I recently…

@imran_sh. For our particular needs, Qlikview was deemed to be the best solution.

Answered a question: Tableau vs. Business Objects - Which is a better solution for visualization and analysis?
I'm reiterating what has been said in one way or another but: We currently use BO for end user generated ad hoc reporting, which it works well for, but I wouldn't even consider it for use in the way one would utilize Tableau or other similar data…

Answered a question: QlikView or Tableau - Which is better?
I would also agree that Tableau is more data discovery than classic reporting. I also didn't find it to be a somewhat flexible tool for creating dashboards, which is where QlikView was stronger. And earlier someone touched on a good distinction as well
If you want to…

Answered a question: BI Tool Evaluation Criteria Rating Matrix -- anyone have one they've used in making a tool selection?
KLBaxter: Partly because we were focused mostly on the dashboarding side of the equation, and also because we already utilize a combination of SSRS and SAP Business Objects for canned and ad hoc reporting respectively, with no plans to replace those products in the near…

Answered a question: BI Tool Evaluation Criteria Rating Matrix -- anyone have one they've used in making a tool selection?
I just completed an evaluation of (and ultimately a final selection from) several vendors and identified about a dozen high level evaluation criteria (using Gartner capabilities as a starting point, and adding those specific to our focus). We were primarily concerned with…
