Commented on One of the benefits is the ability to use solutions you're familiar with and leverage the cloud.
An advantage the Oracle cloud provides over other clouds when using Oracle databases is that they include transparent data encryption free by default for all versions of the database and you do not need to license it separately. By default a cloud database uses encryption…

Answered a question: Compare Microsoft Windows Defender and Symantec Endpoint Protection. How Do I Choose?
Symantec is an Enterprise Solution. It help you provide the enterprise reports that are a critical aspect of endpoint protection. It can also help you get an overall view of the state of your organization as a whole. Such is not possible with Windows defender which is an…

Answered a question: What is the biggest difference between KVM and vSphere?
KVm is a type 2 Hypervisor. It runs as an application inside a full fledged operating system. Thus the hypervisor layer is not as thin as in a dedicated type 1 hypervisor like Vsphere ESXi. Given that it does seem to be comparatively lightweight comapred to other such…

Commented on You can scale VMs without affecting the software applications. You can still reconfigure the hardware.
Currently looking into Oracel Private Cloud Appliance which is built on OVM technology. For those of you with OPN access there is a beta exam available that ends on the 6th of May . https://eventreg.oracle.com/profile/form/index.cfm?PKformID=0x408596b399 for details and to…

Hi Jaari, it seems itcentralstation is the one who has lumped both solutions under the same category sine they come from the same vendor. ideally there should have been two separate categories
Oops actually Oracel VM virtualbox is what Oracel calls virtualbox now :)…

Answered a question: Oracle VM vs. latest VMWare?
Basically if you want to run any oracle database or packaged product OVM is compatible. If its windows OVM runs in HVM ( hardware emulated mode) which is not as good as PVM in some respects .

Commented on One of the most intriguing things about Oracle VM is that it's a free enterprise-grade hypervisor.
I would like to see improved I/O and latency , hvmlite support. I love the fact that now we can go with hugepages even with the limitations we have because if yiou want to run a database then hugepages is the way to go. Of course now with Exalogic and PCA using OVM oracle…

Commented on You get what you pay for
Hi, It does seem to me that a few of your points are overly harsh, for example you say that Oracle database is a single point of failure. It was possible to migrate the database to a RAC instance if you needed that sort of high availability however it is also important to…

P>S I assume you are referring to instance caging when talking about every database not being able to see every cpu. that is not entirely accurate since instance caging does not pin processes to cpus but instead keeps a tab on the total used cpu by a processs and prevents it…

What is the use case of Vblock over Exadata ? Given that vblock uses vmware which means you need to devote the whole vblock to oracle db from a licensing perspective is this really a good choice for a database ?

Support Stability ease of use and the guarantee that it will work well together, these are signature engineered system features. Now with the options of Eighth rack and Capacity on demand the entry level cost for a box has gone down quite a bit for the amount of flash and…

So as is clear the integrated support is definitely a plus point. Also if you are an all oracel shop you get the Oracel vm support free with the support of your Oracle hardware server like a conventional sunfire x6-2 .

There is a great comparison of Vmware vs physical vs OVM by flashdba. Remember that he used all flash storage hence real world values will have smaller variance as disk itself will introduce latencies that are similar for all.. having said that the difference between OVM and…

Answered a question: Is Oracle VM certified for Oracle E-Business Suite?
Yes use of Oracle VM is certified. In fact you can get both standard images a well as exalogic specific images for EBS in case you are using the special Exalogic versionof OVM that connects via infiniband.

Commented on When we migrate physical servers to virtual ones, it reduces the amount of licenses needed.
Definitely the fact that oracle recognizes OVM as a trusted partition that can be used to reduce overall licensing is a major advantage compared to other x86 virtualization techniques.Since today's chips have insane numbers of cores sometimes this is the only way to keep…

Answered a question: Infobright vs. Exadata vs. Teradata vs. SQL Server Data Warehouse- which is most compatible with front end tools?
I think hands down it's Exadata since for the front end apps it's just another Oracle database which means everything under the sun is compatible with it.

I love technology ... I love opening up stuff and fiddling with the guts. I don't promise that I can put everything back together again or that it will work if I do but as the chinese proverb goes it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive....
