The company leases capacity from existing data centers, including sites in New York, Amsterdam, San Francisco, London, Singapore and Frankfurt. It is an Infrastructure as a Service, comparable to Google Storage and Amazon S3 online storage services. DigitalOcean has received $90.4 million in funding across four venture rounds from Techstars, Fortress Investment Group, Crunch Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and IA Ventures.

In 1998, VMware was founded by Diane Greene, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Edward Wang and Edouard Bugnion. Greene and Rosenblum, who are married, first met while at the University of California, Berkeley.
