Useful for quick application building across multiple industries
My team has ten developers, and for one solution, we require three to five developers. Mendix is useful for various industries, such as retail, e-commerce, and banking. For example, we're currently using the solution for a payment app for retail. It can also be used to create a mobile banking app. Mendix is a low-code platform, which means that it allows us to build applications quickly and with less coding. It also has various pre-built components and integrations, which can speed up the development process. Furthermore, one of my team members has Mendix certification and uses it for marketing and sales purposes. The team is learning about how Mendix can be used for queries, which are currently at an intermediate level. Additionally, I have completed 55 queries in Mendix.

Easy to learn and use and provides simple drag-and-drop features
The synergy with other Oracle products is valuable. The tool is very easy to use. It is compatible with the other Oracle products. It works well when used with other Oracle solutions. The solution is quite useful. It is based on the Oracle JET packages. However, we can use other elements. It is a nice drag-and-drop feature. Sometimes, we have to go into the code. It's necessary in some situations. There are some additional components. We can import them. They are useful. It is easy for a beginner to learn to use the tool. The vendor provides documentation about the components. They have a learning path on their Oracle University page. The drag-and-drop feature is quite easy. We will not have the best extensions and applications, but it is easy for beginners.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The integrated security saves a lot of time, especially when it comes to setting up user-roles and security. Also, database updates work automatically. There is no need to write queries to update the database, once you make an update."
"The features that I have found most valuable with Mendix are its business process management and its minimal low code, both from an interface perspective and from a process perspective."
"The most valuable features of Mendix are the drag and drop functions, the data entities, domain models, and all the related features."
"They are leading in the smart manufacturing, and connectivity space."
"The most valuable features of the product are its ease of use and speed. My friend and I find it helpful as a team of just two developers."
"The most valuable features are the decorative style, model-driven development, and the fact that Mendix validates flows. Mendix is quick to develop because it's a low-code platform. It's very robust, flexible, open, and scalable. It's for a low-code customer. The tooling is also really good and it has mobile capabilities."
"It's amazing that you can build web apps and mobile (hybrid) apps with one code base in a few clicks. It's a full continuous integration environment."
"I find the fast development speed and low cost to be very valuable features of Mendix. It's a smart solution for busy developers when we need to apply new changes or fixes quickly. Mendix helps to save time and meet project deadlines faster."
"The most valuable feature was the visual drag and drop on the components."
"You don't need a dedicated IDE to develop. You can work from any browser, which is very convenient. And, with the cloud concept, your code is stored in the cloud, so you can modify it from anywhere, at any time."
"VBS is another tool that allows users to create enterprise applications without needing to store their projects in traditional databases like SQL."
"The initial setup is easy."
"The tool is very easy to use."

Cons

"What is lacking is the support of higher level modeling features, like the modeling you do is relatively low level, yet it is still close to programming. We would like to see a more business-oriented modeling environment, like BPMN."
"One thing I would like to improve is the support system offered by Mendix. It can sometimes take a while to get the help I need when I'm using Mendix."
"Mendix is great for internal applications but not so great for a public-facing interface. It lacks a proper directory structure for public use. The URL will not change from page to page unless a deep link is created for each page. That makes it difficult to bookmark pages in the browser to view later on."
"The code refactoring tools could be better, especially for applications running for years. It's not bad, but it could be smoother. Also, writing new widgets can be trickier than it should be for some people, but not if you're familiar with Mendix."
"It could use a more comprehensive widget creation studio in the IDE."
"There should be more integration with engineering applications and tighter integration for user authentication, such as single sign-on, etc. They have some of that. It just could be stronger."
"I would also like to see automatic adjustment to the Java Heap, whenever an application load becomes too much for the application. It could also use hot database replication."
"Mendix needs to think about itself offering machine learning and artificial intelligence."
"The tool has minor bugs."
"The feature called "action chains" could use a bit of enhancement."
"There was an attempt to enable front-end development, it did what it intended to do, but the side effects were too bad."
"The initial setup of Oracle VBCS can be challenging for those unfamiliar with DBS."
"I would improve the license structure as, for some companies, it may seem a little bit expensive, depending on what they're doing."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Mendix is not open source, but its license cost is cheap, particularly when compared to the Appian license. The license model would depend on how many users you have and how many applications you are creating. If you are creating a single app, you just need to have a single app license, so it's free. If you want a multiple app license to cover two thousand or three thousand users, for example, internal users or external users, then you need to pay for the license. There's also a license model for above three thousand or four thousand, or five thousand internal and external users."
"I would not recommend the solution to small and medium-sized businesses because it’s expensive. It’s great for big organizations. I rate the pricing as a three out of ten."
"Its cost is higher than competitors. The cost mostly includes licensing. It is charged per user. The cost model could be better. When you have a big company, what does per user mean? If I have a company where I have 40,000 people who will go to access it but only 200 do, how do you license it and who do you pay for? If they hit it once, do you pay for it? The licensing is complex for a big company. It is easy for us to buy all we can eat, get an enterprise license agreement, and call it good."
"From a commercial point of view, we would like them to change that they currently sell it as a platform, but as a customer you have to decide upfront the usage of the platform. We would like to have Mendix sell it as a pay as you go model: You pay for what you use, and you don't pay for what you don't use."
"There is a license required to use Mendix. The solution's price is high, but it is best suited for enterprise companies that have the budget. It is not for small or medium-sized businesses."
"Mendix seems a bit expensive. But in terms of wanting to have less developers and higher velocity, the total cost of ownership is fine. It's not cheap, though."
"Pricing used to be complex, but Mendix has improved that quite a bit."
"Mendix licensing cost is based on the number of apps you have on the server. At the basic level, it is free of charge, so that seems reasonable, but once you go beyond that, and when it comes to the number of users on the app, that basic structure doesn't work, and the pricing tends to get a little bit steep."
"It's not expensive when you consider what it provides: low-code/no-code development, faster development time, good quality, and good stability."
"Oracle Visual Builder Cloud Service is much too expensive."
