We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The mobile for MicroStrategy is the best of all the BI platforms. As a separate product for the mobile device, MicroStrategy is the entire BI platform. It is an enterprise solution, a separate unit, etc.""I have never had any problems with the stability.""On our mobile solution you can deploy up to 100,000 users. In our case, we're up to about 10,000 active users, and MicroStrategy's server technology behind the scenes, the Intelligence Server and the Mobile Servers, are very robust and they can handle the workload.""The option to use various administrative tools, like Integrity Manager, is a valuable feature.""We prefer having the analytic capabilities in a single platform, like MicroStrategy provides, because it is easier. The customer gets used to one type of tool, then sticks with it.""There are people who are using MicroStrategy as transaction services.""The implementation was fairly straightforward.""We leverage it, not only for reporting but for analytics and also for geospatial reporting."

"This solution allows us to integrate data from across all client departments, for effective reporting via a single dashboard.""From a scalability standpoint, I would say it's pretty fantastic.""Live Query data on demand, R and Python integration, and the ability to write HTML and JavaScript text areas are all valuable features.""I appreciate Spotfire's range of visualization options, advanced analytics features, and seamless integration with other TIBCO products.""The solution is an affordable one.""It’s stable and straightforward.""We particularly like the data angling feature of this solution. This gives us the ability to work on data transformations, join files, and carry out other data preparation tasks all in a single tool.""We used it pretty heavily in gathering data, which goes to our VPs. They are able to base their next revenue planning based on this metric. So, it has been invaluable."

Cons
"If you compare it with Power BI with the DAX language, it would be great to put that into MicroStrategy.""It is actually pretty complicated to use. It is complicated enough that user adaptation is sometimes difficult. We developed more experts rather than people using it.""They should give proper industry-based tutorials so that one can learn it easily and implement it based on the requirements. They should give more MMP files so that we can import a whole project altogether and learn from that project.""It would be good if it had greater analytics so we could build these visualizations by ourselves with scripts.""We're starting to open it up to more and more people to give them the ability and start looking at these things themselves, but it's not the most intuitive system, Enterprise Manager that is, so it's tough. We're trying to bridge the gap between usability and who we let in the system, because you're not going to come in and just pick it up.""The In-Memory Capability (cubes) needs a lot of improvement.""MicroStrategy is dragging behind other tools on the self-service visualizations, like Tableau. I would rate Tableau as a 10. For the same visualizations, I would say MicroStrategy is an eight, maybe nine. They're still behind on the self-service visualizations,""They need to improve on distribution services. There are lack of features which were there earlier with Narrowcast, but they are not there in the distribution services."

More MicroStrategy Cons →

"Personalising Spotfire, as a whole, is painful and is something that could be made easier.""Compared to competitors, the UI is quite dated.""The handling and consumption of realtime data could be improved.""The Text Area feature needs to be more user-friendly. It is a little clunky to use, and it is difficult to consistently format text.""The way TIBCO Spotfire is designed, in my opinion, is the reason why it lags a bit, especially compared to other BI tools like Qlik.""We would like to see some improvement in the default properties of the solution, so that there is less need for us to spend our time coding.""I would like to see the visualization library in this solution expanded, so that I can increase what I can offer to our clients.""The solution might be generic."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "They made a change in the licensing module some time ago and we can now use all the enterprise tools for free."
  • "The pricing for MicroStrategy is always on the higher side. They should seriously start thinking about their pricing and licensing strategy."
  • "While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
  • "The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
  • "We actually researched some of the other solutions. For options, price, and customer acceptance, this product has worked well for us."
  • "They gave us a good deal."
  • "There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
  • "They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."
  • More MicroStrategy Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The ROI is nearly impossible to calculate."
  • "The pricing seems competitive and reasonable. The value delivered by the product far exceeds the cost."
  • "The Tibco sales teams have been very difficult to work with - ignoring requests, misrepresenting level of demand, etc."
  • "The cost is a few hundred dollars per user per year."
  • "The cost of TIBCO Spotfire could improve. It should be less expensive. It's the most expensive visualization tool in our company."
  • "The price-point for this solution is negotiable depending on usage levels."
  • "This product carries a monthly licensing charge, with the amount depending on the features that are to be included. This costs also covers the use of technical support."
  • "In comparison to other solutions such as IBM Cognos, TIBCO Spotfire is more affordable."

After a recent presentation, several attendees asked me about the applications of Visual Insights and Tableau. Many companies are investing in both tools and are trying to figure out the right tool for specific applications Tableau has found its sweet-spot as an agile discovery tool that analysts use to create and share insights. It is also the tool of choice for rapid prototyping of dashboards. Tableau is very flexible with its data import. Tableau's data blending capability is very intuitive. This capability is useful when you have data spread across several different sources that has not gone through ETL processes. This is a problem analysts deal with routinely. They are unable to wait for the data warehouse team to develop ETL processes to provide the physical models they need to build an analysis. The Tableau interface is Excel-like and has a low barrier to entry for analysts that are used to working in Excel. Building a dashboard by mashing up visualizations in a Tableau worksheet is extremely simple. Users are able to build good presentation-quality dashboards in a very short amount time. Tableau's annotations capabilities and its time and geographical intelligence are key differentiators. Tableau has overcome limitations in data sharing with the introduction of a Data Server in Tableau 7.0. The Data server allows Data sources and extracts to be shared securely and opens up interesting new possibilities. If your application can take advantage of the above… Read more →
