Oracle Database is 200% stable. Most of the time when you have issues, it's not with Oracle but with the applications that are running on it that are not properly tuned. Oracle, however, if absolutely reliable.
The causes on the application end need to be properly looked at and tuned up properly, to reduce the overhead costs that are there. The loads are something we can have effect if we need to, and that's where we usually see problems.

It is one of the robust products from a stability point of view. I have not really found bugs or glitches. However, on a test database, I had an issue the other night where Oracle decided to behave badly when I was trying to do a query. The solution was to get the latest patches and install the latest patches. Everything worked fine after that. I did all of that without contacting Oracle support. I needed to get what I was working on done. So, I had to plow through to find the answers. I had found some people making some oblique references to what the problem might be. I then took a chance on doing the update. I found the patch kit, but it was not easy to find the right patch kit on their website.
It is really stable. Its stability is fine, but just don't make any changes. The more changes you make and the more developers you've got, the more unstable it's going to be. So, if you've got a stable environment in terms of development, then it has to be stable.

Oracle Databases are very well known for their stability. If there are new products, they have a process for discovering bugs, and they keep updating the software with the patches that cover all these bugs. The features that Oracle Databases have is enough for us. It's very sophisticated.

The solution is stable most of the time. Unfortunately, I faced a few different issues. I was luckily able to solve them.
It's very important, if you choose Oracle as a solution, to also get the support as well. You can technically live without it, however, if you run into issues, Oracle can help you when you have the support that they offer.
In my case, I didn't have support so I had to kind-of feel around for a solution. I made the mistake, after the first year, of not renewing my support and I really should have.
Multiple issues, but mostly triggered from lower layers like OS, Network, storage layers.

View full review »It's incredibly stable. There's a couple things you do need to be aware of, but it's not so much the stability issues, it's actually the data leakage issues. Because we're talking about encryption here, you have to be careful that data can leak out in third text, and I'll give you an example. If you take a data pump export of encrypted data and you do not specify encrypted in the command line, it will be saved in clear text. That's one issue.
Another issue is if you gather histogram information on encrypted data, that data will be stored in the statistics tables unencrypted so you have to use a product such as Database Vault to wall that off so you can protect it.

View full review »Oracle stability's a funny thing. I know companies who do not have any database administrators. Stability in those shops is sporadic, and it should be. You need a database administrator to oversee your databases, just like you need a manager to oversee your people. It's an asset. In fact, your data's your most important asset. You sure as heck should have a specialist.
Oracle's a very powerful, robust, capable database. However, in order to be powerful, capable, and robust, it's a little complex. You need a database administrator. I'm not saying you have to hire a six figure guy, but you've got to have somebody. I know a lot of SQL server shops where they also don't work with database administrators. They can get away with it because the database isn't quite as industrial. I'm not going to build petabyte databases in SQL server but I am going to build it in Oracle. If I've got that size, it helps to have a DBA around.

The problem really was sub-optimal coding of the legacy application in the use of the locking methods of Oracle, which was magnified when propagating locks to other nodes, however would have been nice if RAC could have handled it, even when sup-optimal. After switching some years ago to a single server non-RAC solution, the database has been rock steady - only instabilities was when O/S or hardware failed, not the database.
