We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution offers great visibility that allows you to track where errors originated.""I like Business iQ the most, so far. It has great analytics configurations and I can get real-time updates. We have eCommerce releases every week. So the one use case that I use Business iQ is to compare before and after release performance using AppDynamics.""What I like most about AppDynamics Server Monitoring is that it's easy to manipulate and easy to implement. All solutions have the same features, but what sets AppDynamics Server Monitoring apart is that it's really quick to implement. AppDynamics Server Monitoring has a great interface. As a developer, it doesn't matter whether it's SolarWinds, Dynatrace, or any APM you're using, but it would matter to the customer. A product must be easy to manipulate or use, for example, AppDynamics Server Monitoring, for the customer, but for developers like my team, there's no pressure, even if a solution requires coding.""Setting up the monitoring agents was straightforward.""The product has the ability to drill down to the errors whenever we have issues.""This solution gives us quite good insights that we might otherwise overlook, or it might take a really long time to debug those issues.""The product provides a nice end-user experience.""We can view the server activities, including issues in the process, with a single click."

"The email notifications are helpful, and the dashboards are user-friendly for people with little network monitoring knowledge.""The most valuable feature is the dashboard interface. It's very clean, it's very simple to use.""The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good.""The authentication links into our standard Active Directory authentication, which is very good.""The best feature is that it lets me know what is going on. I need to know if something has gone down, I need to know if something is running very slowly. PRTG tells me that.""Ability to create a dashboard inside software monitoring.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the different monitoring probes available.""One of its valuable features is the fact that it handles multiple operating systems... And I like the fact that it tells me when things are about to fall over, which means I can preempt it and not have to wake up at three in the morning to fix it."

Cons
"Things are being done differently in the industry now, and many of these problems are being solved with cloud databases.""An area for improvement in AppDynamics Server Monitoring is integration; in particular, it needs a better way to integrate with custom applications such as Siebel CRM. Right now, it's challenging to integrate AppDynamics Server Monitoring with Siebel CRM because it sometimes gives an error and cannot integrate properly.""The tool should provide information like the number of connections and processes utilized in real time.""The one thing that I find it difficult in using AppDynamics is, for any new user, it's not easy for him or her to configure the transactions in AppDynamics because the UI is pretty complex. The configuration is pretty complex for a new, fresh user. They can make the UI simpler, that'll be very helpful for anyone to configure their website in AppDynamics.""The solution could be more mobile friendly.""The solution has performance issues after we deploy the agent.""The product’s dashboard could be more easy to implement.""In the next release, I would like to see the configuration of the data and more support for new applications. It should support new languages."

More AppDynamics Server Monitoring Cons →

"We would like more cloud native sensors for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc. A lot of businesses are moving in that direction, so having something where we can pull performance stats out of these cloud services would be great for us.""I have an issue with DFS, distributed file services... there isn't one by default. Taking into account the difference between DFS and DFSR as well would be great.""The inventory of the device should be improved.""In the next release, PRTG Network Monitor should add a backup solution.""This solution is a good product so far, but I haven't been using it long enough to know how it could be improved.""I am not sure the solution is giving me all the needed feedback that we need. When something goes off on our IT infrastructure, it does tell me. However, it would be nice if it gave more intuitive information, e.g., the hard drive has gone up by 60 percent in an hour.""Can be slow in the way it polls the different engines.""PRTG Network Monitor could improve by having a feature to allow uploading of preset standard network switch configurations and the ability to monitor the SLA configuration, such as uptime for the switches or internet connectivity. This would be very useful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "My understanding is that the price of this solution is quite high, compared to other products."
  • "The pricing for AppDynamics Server Monitoring in Africa and the Middle East is too expensive, so it's very hard to sell it to customers. If there could be different pricing or package for the region, that would be great. My company pays for the license of AppDynamics Server Monitoring on a per-agent, per-server basis. It's $700 to $1000 per server, and it's paid annually. My company is on a subscription model for the solution. On a scale of one to five, where one is expensive and five is cheap, my rating for the price of AppDynamics Server Monitoring is a two."
  • "The solution has a high cost."
  • "AppDynamics Server Monitoring is a very expensive product, but if you negotiate well, you get value for money...My company used to make early payments toward the licensing costs of the solution, but now my company has opted for a different licensing model."
  • "The tool is expensive."

  • "Licenses are very expensive, so I would like to see cheaper licensing."
  • "If you're looking for a cost effective software I’d suggest this product."
  • "Sensors on free version can run out quick."
  • "The ability to use the base version with 100 free sensors is great. The cost on other packages can be very reasonable."
  • "When you buy PRTG, everything comes in one bundle. Licensing is very easy."
  • "The price was pretty good, very competitive."
  • "The pricing is not too bad. It's not massively expensive, and the ability to upscale or even downscale licenses every year is brilliant for us."
  • "On a yearly basis, I believe it's between £1,200 and £1,500."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
