Well-documented setup process and highly stable solution
Pros and Cons
  • "Having a load balancer in between is very helpful when you have huge traffic."
  • "There is room for improvement in the scalability."

What is our primary use case?

We have several instances and applications that we run using WordPress. For that, I needed an easy, secure, and faster solution with different options to back up the website and data. Amazon EC2 offers options to back up data using the S3 version control system, which worked really well for us. Moreover, it's cost-effective.

Having a load balancer in between is very helpful when you have huge traffic. It has been beneficial for handling around 80,000 to 200,000 visitors a month on our blog.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in the scalability.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for a couple of months. So, it's been three to four months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is definitely more complex than any of the readily available tools. But, it's okay. It's well-documented, so it was not a big deal for me.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment took me around a week, and it's been running for three months in a row. But yeah, we are still testing.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's not expensive, nor too cheap; it's okay. We can compare it to the pricing of other cloud service providers.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Right now, EC2 is in the testing phase, and we are still using Cloudera and DigitalOcean. However, I'm looking for solutions that could be more helpful in the long run. Additionally, I've used Amazon RDS as the database provider because our CMS has become heavy over time. So I had to offload the database into RDS and connect it with EC2.

What other advice do I have?

When using Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling, it's crucial to have a solid understanding of cloud computing and infrastructure management. That's very essential.

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A flexible solution that eliminates the need for hardware
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution removes the need for hardware. We can easily create servers or machines. Just by clicking or specifying our requirements, like memory size or disk space, it's set up for us. The tool eliminates the need for hardware. We can choose what we need and pay as we use it. It is flexible and can integrate with any product."
  • "The solution's pricing is expensive. You pay based on how much you use it, like paying for the time or hours you use the service. There's no need to buy hardware separately."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product as a computing machine. By clicking on the portal, we can create different machines with specific features, like memory size.

What is most valuable?

The solution removes the need for hardware. We can easily create servers or machines. Just by clicking or specifying our requirements, like memory size or disk space, it's set up for us. The tool eliminates the need for hardware. We can choose what we need and pay as we use it. It is flexible and can integrate with any product.

What needs improvement?

The solution's pricing is expensive. You pay based on how much you use it, like paying for the time or hours you use the service. There's no need to buy hardware separately.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the product for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool's stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Sometimes the configuration is not intuitive. Maybe the documentation could be clearer in certain areas.

While understanding the tool is straightforward, there could be improvements in how intuitive the setup and the documentation are.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling for nearly six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability depends on the applications. If there are software-related issues like poor memory management, instances may restart or fail, however, Auto Scaling effectively handles this by dynamically creating new instances as needed. Thus, I consider it highly reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It offers almost perfect scalability, adapting well to various demands, especially during peak periods such as holidays.

How are customer service and support?

During these six years, I have not needed to reach out to technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Setting up is not complicated once you understand how to manage the tool, and it is primarily an issue of communicating with business stakeholders to understand their needs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Considering the expenses associated with the instances themselves, I would rate it a six. While instances can be costly depending on their number, the cost aligns with the value provided.

What other advice do I have?

One should pay careful attention to the configuration of policies. Misconfiguration could lead to undesirable costs since resources may not be optimally used.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
