Provides a single pane of glass, a user-friendly GUI, and is extremely reliable
Currently, a significant portion of automation within our infrastructure relies on custom-written scripts. For instance, every time we require automated IP address space updates, we must develop the script ourselves. Looking forward, I would welcome pre-existing scripts readily deployable within our infrastructure to alleviate this burden. BlueCat currently meets our core needs, and we appreciate their service. However, we believe the platform could benefit from significant improvements, particularly in terms of ongoing maintenance and the implementation of new features. One crucial area for development is IPv6 support. As we transition to this newer networking protocol, we lack robust tools and functionalities tailored to IPv6 within BlueCat. Consequently, we'd like to see greater investment from BlueCat in building out their IPv6 feature set.

Useful for DNS/DHCP management but needs a better GUI
The initial setup is a little difficult. I haven't ever built any good environment as-is. However, I have tried to develop some labs for my testing; and found that it was really difficult for me to spin up. Setting up everything correctly is the one thing. The deployment itself can be done in half an hour. That said, this is not going to be just one appliance, this is going to be a distributed environment, like hundreds of appliances all together work as a single unit, and that's how the solution is provided. I haven't done any cold deployments. That said, for my testing, I could do it by myself in my lab. Otherwise, to be frank, I don't know how many people would be needed to do a deployment in a well-deployed organization, a running organization. If you have to implement the solution, you're definitely going to be doing it as a shared effort with network security and everyone else.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable piece, which has been a lifesaver, would be the BlueCat DNS resolver. BlueCat Cloud DNS resolver is a tool that takes a look into your cloud's DNS and then reports back everything it finds into BlueCat's DNS Edge solution. The Edge solution has a bunch of nice rules that you can configure to route the DNS traffic. That automation alone is a lifesaver for me for the day-to-day churn of the DNS components that change on an hourly, daily basis."
"As a defense contractor, we must meet many compliance standards regarding logging, configuration, and administrative access. BlueCat is one of the few products that combines all the compliance components in a secure, reliable solution."
"The solution includes automatic management of segments."
"The most valuable features of BlueCat Integrity are the user-friendly UI and the permission management."
"The most significant advantage of BlueCat is its foundation on open-source software, specifically BIND and ISC DHCP."
"It is easy to use. It has an understandable GUI interface. Its deployment is relatively easy."
"I've been impressed by BlueCat's performance and user-friendly GUI."
"BlueCat saved us money in terms of a life-and-death scenario and the stress factors that surround that in a healthcare environment. We generally don't have downtime in our DATP environments anymore. The clinics and the hospitals can continue to operate and not be in that position to be down."
"The DNS/DHCP side of the product is quite useful."

Cons

"During our testing phase, we encountered some issues with Active Directory and DNS reverse lookups."
"The technical support is slow and has room for improvement."
"The ease of use is where I got to give a little knock on them. Once you start using the tool, it becomes very easy. It's actually quite easy to use. The problem that I run into is documentation. The documentation could be a little bit richer. Documentation has always been a little pet peeve for me with them."
"The IPAM dashboard could be enhanced to display more information and provide data analysis features."
"Unfortunately, BlueCat Integrity doesn't support bulk Content Security Policy configuration."
"The solution is too granular and sometimes complex to configure. We do not always need so many details. Simpler configurations with fewer details would be beneficial."
"The integration has room for improvement."
"The UI is outdated and needs a modern refresh."
"It's an older product. The GUI and everything is a little outdated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"BlueCat Integrity meets our expectations and aligns with our budget forecast."
"They're competitive. The way they run their model is good. Could it stand some tweaking? Sure. There are some items there. One of the things I looked at in the recent past was their container solutions. You have to pay for licensing to use their containerized platform, but the licensing doesn't include the container licensing itself. I'd love to be able to have one big package per se."
"Overall, I would say that it is priced fairly, though perhaps a bit on the high side."
"BlueCat Integrity is affordable."
"BlueCat Integrity is a little expensive, but it's worth the price because it offers the flexibility and features we need in our space. We have more than 25,000 employees, and it makes sense for a network of our size. It's required for us to be compliant in the defense industry. Given the restrictions we face, we must be able to easily show that we've complied with all the regulations."
"Compared to other solutions, BlueCat Integrity offers a competitive price."
"Overall, it's a decent price for the product. There are other vendors that have support models and costs that are, sometimes, double what Bluecat charges."
"We paid around $5,000 per year for SolarWinds, and now we pay around $20,000 per year for BlueCat, but we have less downtime and fewer issues with DNS and DHCP."
