Has easy cluster maintenance and auto-tiering moves data to fast disk if needed

What is our primary use case?

SAN volumes for all system types. You can serve Linux and Windows systems alike, just add the multipath software.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Multi-site redundancy, who wouldn't want that?
  • Cluster maintenance is super easy: just add a node to the second site and the software takes care of the data.

What is most valuable?

Auto-tiering moves data to fast disk if needed. Works great. I don't have to think about the second set of data.

What needs improvement?

Maybe adding a Linux data manager, and moving away from Windows. It has become more reliable when using 2012/2016.

The new third node is great for an always-on experience

What is our primary use case?

  • A powerful, always-on system. We used DataCore for a few years.
  • The best solution to get build and an always-on strategy. It has zero downtime and is very fast and flexible.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Creates and build fast flash-only storage systems
  • Creates storages with TB in small units
  • Saves many kW of power and cooling.

What is most valuable?

Mirrored vDisk, and creating a third node with asynchronous replication to get the data out of the datacenter. The new third node is great for an always-on experience.

What needs improvement?

  • Better integration into backup solutions like Veeam
  • An HTML5 feature GUI will improve usability.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

Mirroring provides a high-level of service and optimizes the use of obsolete storage.
Pros and Cons
  • "Mirroring is the most valuable feature because I can provide a high-level of service and optimize the use of obsolete storage."
  • "When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved."

What is most valuable?

Mirroring is the most valuable feature because I can provide a high-level of service and optimize the use of obsolete storage.

How has it helped my organization?

I have a system that uses approximately 6TB as a file server and I use the thin provisioning to optimize the storage.

What needs improvement?

When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved.

I think that SAN Symphony Data Core should improve the connectivity of iSCSI initiators on hosts, because sometimes when I do a maintenance any data core server, I lose connection and I need to reboot the server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not use another solution, this it is first one.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was very simple, except the iSCSI network driver on Windows.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In my case, the licensing per terabytes is very high and it must be licensed for each extra functionality.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated VMware vSAN.

What other advice do I have?

There are many products that fit the needs of the company, however, the support, warranty, scalability, and price are decisive factors when deciding.

I always prefer to do a PoC (demo).

Easily scalable software-defined storage solution for medium-sized businesses; has high availability and stability
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of DataCore SANsymphony SDS is its high availability. This solution also exhibits good performance and has high stability."
  • "One limitation of this solution is that it's Windows-based, e.g. one requirement to install DataCore SANsymphony SDS is putting it on a Windows server machine. It relies on Windows and that is a limitation because there are some customers who are looking for non Windows systems."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of DataCore SANsymphony SDS is its high availability.

I also like that this solution has high stability and good performance.

What needs improvement?

One limitation of this solution is that it's Windows-based, e.g. one requirement to install DataCore SANsymphony SDS is putting it on a Windows server machine. It relies on Windows and that is a limitation because we have some customers who are looking for non Windows systems.

What we'd like to see in the future is for this software to support more operating systems.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been working with DataCore SANsymphony SDS for 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Based on customer opinion, DataCore SANsymphony SDS has very high stability. It's a good and stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of DataCore SANsymphony SDS is okay. I never had an issue with the scalability of this software, but it could be because we're working with medium-sized customers, not large-sized customers. I'm not sure if scalability would be a concern when dealing with large-sized customers.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support for this software is good. We ran into a few issues and their technical support team were on time helping us, including our customers. I would rate the support for DataCore SANsymphony SDS five out of five.

What other advice do I have?

We are not using software-defined storage, but we are partners with some vendors. We are distributors and resellers of software-defined storage solutions. We're working with DataCore SANsymphony SDS.

As DataCore SANsymphony SDS is a good software, it doesn't need to improve much.

Someone else set the software up, and I wasn't involved in the process of setting it up.

The advice I would give to a company that's thinking of implementing this solution is for them to have a good understanding of the documentation, and for them to be trained before installing the software in their production environment.

I'm giving DataCore SANsymphony SDS eight points out of ten. If they are able to support more OS (operating systems), I would give them a perfect score.

Although the product itself is developed and runs so well, the only area I see lacking is their support

What is our primary use case?

We are using DataCore to increase I/O, to more flexibly utilize storage and to provide a robust offsite replication solution.

How has it helped my organization?

It has really helped with I/O and being able to manage our storage more simply.

What is most valuable?

The ease with which I can create and manage storage for my entire network from one easy-to-use interface.

What needs improvement?

The only area I see lacking with DataCore is their support. It's not very good at all, and it's frankly, very frustrating and has almost caused me to swear off the product. With that said, the product itself (especially when working) is developed and runs very well and because of that I will keep using it.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

You can install it on almost any hardware and/or hypervisor

What is our primary use case?

Low-cost infrastructure for SOHO.

How has it helped my organization?

Excellent performance and reliability, and very low cost using home hardware.

What is most valuable?

Flexibility. You can install it on almost any hardware and/or hypervisor.

What needs improvement?

Deduplication works but implementing it is complex.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

Inexpensive and runs on commodity hardware, but beware of technical support

Valuable Features:

inexpensive for the amount of storage runs on commodity hardware

Room for Improvement:

tech support is NOT good at all, even when buying the higher level support from them. You feel like you know more than the person you are speaking with.

Achieve high availability through hardware independence and flexible storage extension
Pros and Cons
  • "The support is excellent."
  • "In my opinion, there should be improvements in how to get and filter logs."

What is our primary use case?

We provide services and solutions for end customers. The only software-defined storage solution we sell and successfully deploy is DataCore SANsymphony. We primarily use it for small environments, mostly as central storage for VMware customers.

What is most valuable?

DataCore SANsymphony is hardware-independent and offers active-active, high availability. This is crucial for us. It is a reliable solution which ensures peace of mind due to its independent operation from the hardware. Customers can extend storage with flexibility, as one is not obligated to purchase hard disks or controllers from the same storage vendor.

What needs improvement?

In my opinion, there should be improvements in how to get and filter logs. However, this is not a frequent need because they have great support that offers quick and knowledgeable assistance. Otherwise, we do not encounter many issues with this solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with DataCore SANsymphony for about fifteen years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Most of my experiences with DataCore SANsymphony are positive. If you adhere to best practices, you will encounter nearly no issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are no limits to scalability, which is essential for central storage. We primarily deal with small environments, but I'm confident in its ability to scale up as needed.

How are customer service and support?

The support is excellent. I would rate it a ten out of ten. They always help me quickly and with great knowledge, which is essential for central storage.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be complex due to hardware independence. One must check for any known issues with the hardware, like host bus adapters and firmware. It involves many steps to ensure the best practice installation. However, the setup process itself is very easy if you prepare adequately.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost changed from a perpetual license to a subscription model, and it seems reasonable. I am technical personnel and not deeply involved in sales, but the pricing appears fine.

What other advice do I have?

It is great to be independent from the hardware. You are not obligated to buy storage components from a single vendor. The active-active high availability feature is very beneficial. It is a reliable solution. I would rate DataCore SANsymphony as a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud
