The product is used as a secure gateway - a gateway to give access to remote users by checking the user credentials and user authentication. It also checks the machine authentication and the machine security, by using host checking mechanisms. The product gives or allows access or authorizes access to certain resources based on the user credentials and the machine check.
Network Security Engineer at Smals vzw
Easy to set up with flexible management and good network resources
Pros and Cons
- "The flexibility in their management is great."
- "The stability could be better. There are sometimes bugs in the system."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
They support a very extended or a list of resources, network resources, applications, whatever. They are very broad in supporting all kinds of resources.
The flexibility in their management is great. For us, there was no other product better than that.
The product is very easy to set up.
What needs improvement?
We would like to see them be a bit more swift in the changes in the protocols and the browsers. They are lagging a bit behind. Certainly, for the Pulse Desktop Client, they should really work on the modernization.
The stability could be better. There are sometimes bugs in the system.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for years already. The VPN solution has been taken out of the Juniper company and has been put into a new company, Pulse Secure, so we have been using this solution, the same solution, for years on.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
For many years, it was known as a very stable platform. However, now, they have a bit of difficulty really having a stable and robust product overall, end-to-end.
The central infrastructure is still very stable and robust, however, have troubles with security vulnerabilities and bugs in its code. They have a bit of trouble on those issues, on those topics in general.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is great. You can have whatever number of appliances you need.
We are an ISP, meaning we have different customers, and different organizations, for this VPN service. We have a very diverse set of clients. We have somewhere around 10,000 end-users for this platform.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using a Cisco VPN solution in the years starting around 2002 or 2003. A Juniper solution was chosen back around 2007. It changed names and we have been using it ever since.
How was the initial setup?
The implementation is rather easy. Installing out of the box, the application is easy to install and configure.
Deployment time depends on a few factors. For example, the primary installation, the primary configuration of the central infrastructure, only takes a couple of hours. Then, of course, to have all your different clients connected and connecting to the infrastructure, that's a project of months as you have to set up a whole project and communication strategy, and then you need a project manager to give clear guidance on this.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pulse Secure and Juniper are very expensive in their license cost. That's a drawback of this solution. The hardware is rather cheap, however, licensing is very, very, very expensive.
You have different kinds of licenses you can be used, depending on what kind of functionality you will be using with this infrastructure. Of course, you need to have support on these licenses also, and this is rather expensive also. You need a vendor or a supporting firm capable of supporting the functionality and the licenses linked to them.
What other advice do I have?
We are a customer and an end-user.
Last year, this solution was bought by Ivanti. Now it's called Ivanti Connect Secure. Basically, it's been the same product since 2007. It's still the same product yet it has been evolving, of course.
We are using the latest version of the solution.
I'd advise potential new users to do some homework on what network resources they want to present to their users, and what will be the conditions they will impose on their end-users as for users' credentials, for example, multi-factor authentication for start. Also, they should look at the host checking on their client PCs. For example, they need to consider what will be the conditions to access certain resources, as that will be important for their configuration at the outset.
I'd rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Easy and quick to set up and provides good security
Pros and Cons
- "The best feature of Pulse Connect Secure is the good security it provides. It gives a secure connection to your network."
- "At the moment, Pulse Connect Secure is a pretty good solution, and I don't see any issues with it. Currently, I'm not aware of a new or additional feature that's needed in Pulse Connect Secure, but it would be good if the team could look at how the speed of connection could be increased. Though it's quite seamless and I didn't face any problem with the speed, it would be better to improve the speed and keep going forward, especially as the industry's changing and people would love connections to be a lot faster."
What is our primary use case?
I use Pulse Connect Secure as a VPN to access the network. It's a mechanism I use to connect to the virtual network of my company.
What is most valuable?
The best feature of Pulse Connect Secure is the good security it provides. It gives a secure connection to your network.
What needs improvement?
At the moment, Pulse Connect Secure is a pretty good solution, and I don't see any issues with it.
Currently, I'm not aware of a new or additional feature that's needed in Pulse Connect Secure, but it would be good if the team could look at how the speed of connection could be increased. Though it's quite seamless and I didn't face any problem with the speed, it would be better to improve the speed and keep going forward, especially as the industry's changing and people would love connections to be a lot faster.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Pulse Connect Secure for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Pulse Connect Secure is a very stable solution, and I didn't notice any problems with its stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Pulse Connect Secure is pretty much scalable, and I didn't have any problem in this aspect.
How are customer service and support?
I never needed to contact the customer support team of Pulse Connect Secure because I didn't have any problems with the solution.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Pulse Connect Secure was easy enough and didn't take much time. Setting up the solution was fast enough.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
A license is required for you to use Pulse Connect Secure, but I'm not aware of how much it costs.
What other advice do I have?
About fifty people use Pulse Connect Secure within the company.
My company decided to use Pulse Connect Secure because it had all the required security features, it was easy to connect to it, and it's a standard solution in the market.
My advice for first-time users of Pulse Connect Secure is to try it out. What you should do is shortlist two to three good providers then implement it on a small subset of users for a short period, then evaluate the solution based on your use case, and then, depending on the outcome, you should implement Pulse Connect Secure on a larger user base.
You should always go and implement the solution on a smaller subset of users first, then do a proof of concept and verify how Pulse Connect Secure works and if it does work out, and then roll the solution out to a larger set of users. Your rollout of the solution should be scattered, so you can see if there's a real impact from using Pulse Connect Secure.
It's a solution I would recommend to others.
My rating for Pulse Connect Secure is nine out of ten.
I'm a customer of Pulse Connect Secure.

What is our primary use case?
We use the solution to connect to our client systems.

Director of IT Technical Department at Prague Stock Exchange
Provides good security for our virtual desktops while working remotely from home
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is being able to securely connect and use virtual desktops."
- "This solution normally works but at times, we have had trouble with connectivity."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution to create a secure connection for our virtual desktops when we are working from home or other remote locations.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is being able to securely connect and use virtual desktops.
What needs improvement?
This solution normally works but at times, we have had trouble with connectivity. Disconnections are not regularly happening but they do cause us problems. This type of instability is very serious and we don’t know why the disconnections happen. We have a license for 50 users and there are only 25 of us, yet sometimes it is a problem.
It is not easy to create a connection, so this is something that should be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been suing Pulse Connect Secure for between four and five years. We began using this solution when it was still owned and managed by Juniper Networks.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We have experienced instability because of intermittent disconnections.
We use this solution on a daily basis. Things have also changed recently because of the COVID crisis. Prior to this, many people did not work from home. Now, however, most people are working from their homes and need a secure connection.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability does not seem to be a problem. We currently have 50 licenses and close to 25 regular users. We expect this to increase because we have 80 or 90 people in total, who may be working from home.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have not spoken with technical support personally. I believe that support is given through our local partner.
What about the implementation team?
Our in-house team performed the implementation and deployment, including the RSA token.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We are now looking for another solution because our infrastructure is from Cisco and we have the VPN concentrator. Half of our staff are using Cisco VPN. It is without an RSA token and our users are saying that it is more stable. It is also easier because they only need to use a name and password.
What other advice do I have?
From my research and experiences, I would say that this is not the best solution on the market, but it is one of the best. When it comes to setting up a super-secret connection, it may not be possible to make it much easier. I think that when it comes to a secret connection with two-factor authentication, you need to follow the steps.
The only real complaint that I have about Pulse Connect Secure is the instability that comes from the disconnections.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Infrastructure and Cyber Security Senior Manager at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
An easy-to-maintain and stable VPN solution that needs improved customer support
Pros and Cons
- "The stability of the product is its most valuable feature."
- "The support team of the product needs improvement. Sometimes we have issues with multiple authentications, but there is no help from the support team."
What is our primary use case?
The solution is being used for VPN.
What is most valuable?
The stability of the product is its most valuable feature.
What needs improvement?
The support team of the product needs improvement. Sometimes we have issues with multiple authentications, but there is no help from the support team. It is very dissatisfying.
Some emerging technologies like Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) have the VPN included even if you don't need to use it. The present process for Pulse Connect Secure is becoming old-fashioned; they need to change the product.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used the solution for two and a half years for my company. I have been using this solution since 2004 when it was called Juniper.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. You need to add a few more licenses, and it works fine. Currently, seven thousand or eight thousand people have current concurrent licenses.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is not satisfactory. I rate it four or five out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used a Cisco solution and another solution.
Pulse used to be much more flexible than Cisco. You could do more with Pulse, like different realms and authentication policies for different types of users. But the latest still needs to be improved, and users see much more user-friendly solutions. As I mentioned, other solutions exist, like Zero Trust Networks Access.
So these are getting much easier for users. But for installing a solution for the first time, ThoughtSpot was much easier than Cisco.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
This product is good and easy to maintain if one can manage without the products' support team and have their administrative team. If you want to implement a new feature or interaction with the product, it gets complicated, or help is needed.
I rate the overall product a six out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Product Lead at redBus
User-friendly, quick support, and reliable
Pros and Cons
- "Pulse Connect Secure is a stable solution."
- "The most valuable features of Pulse Connect Secure are the user-friendly connection and interconnecting."
What is our primary use case?
I am using Pulse Connect Secure as a VPN. We are connecting to a private network, such as connecting to the Amazon AWS accounts for restrictive reasons. The main reason is for security purposes.
What needs improvement?
The most valuable features of Pulse Connect Secure are the user-friendly connection and interconnecting.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Pulse Connect Secure for approximately one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Pulse Connect Secure is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I have found Pulse Connect Secure to be scalable.
We have four people in my organization using this solution. We do not have plans to increase usage at this time.
How are customer service and support?
The support from Pulse Connect Secure is great. When we face connectivity issues they responded in a prompt manner. They have been able to resolve all of our issues. If we have a critical issue, they can resolve it within four to five hours.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Pulse Connect Secure could improve the speed at which it connects. It is slow at the moment.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Pulse Connect Secure was easy. The full deployment took approximately four hours.
What other advice do I have?
When we connect to the people, through Teams or Zooms this channel will have voice controls and it is on and off sometimes, but there's no lag between the screen share, that is fine. However, there is some lag, with voice communication.
I rate Pulse Connect Secure an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Architect - Cloud Serviced at a comms service provider with 10,001+ employees
The flexibility enables us to design solutions well, save effort and cost, and better support customers
Pros and Cons
- "I can safely say this is one of the best solutions I have seen for VPN access. It can achieve what other vendors may not be able to. This product will train you about exactly what an SSL should be. You can leverage it to do whatever you wish, the way you wish to do it. This is the solution if you want a perfectly scalable product for your enterprise that can help your mobile users and integrate with the latest technologies."
- "Zero test FDP (Fraud Protection and Prevention) should be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use Pulse Connect Secure as a secure VPN device connection solution.
How has it helped my organization?
It has allowed us to be flexible with our changing requirements. Our social environment supplies each customer with a different solution, so it could become tedious without a multi-themed solution. That would cost our organization money. At the same time, it will cost in quality of service to the customer. Because of the flexibility we can design solutions well, save effort and cost, and support customers better.
What is most valuable?
The most important feature is flexibility. All the features have served their purpose for us because it is so flexible. It can achieve every solution that you expect it to or can be integrated with other solutions.
What needs improvement?
Features that we would like to see in future releases include:
- Zero test FDP (Fraud Protection and Prevention).
- Improving customization like make an IVS for servicing multiple transactions from one customer. It is possible now but could be simplified.
- Bandwidth monitoring. It is functional but can be better with graphs, like exactly bandwidth is used per user.
- Telemetry or IPFIX support could also be useful for reporting. We can do that ourselves but it would be a good addition to the package.
- An STP solution, which is relatively new to the market.
For how long have I used the solution?
The organization has been using this solution for about 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The version we are currently using is very stable. The previous version had many problems but they have been resolved.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
For scalability, I would give it a 10 out of10. The solution is not just scalable, it's available, too. You can actually put two devices in a cluster so if one machine goes down service is not interrupted. You can add other configurations as well.
How are customer service and technical support?
The customer support is awesome. If you give them the problem they'll give you the solution immediately. If not, they'll go find out what the problem is. They also can route a future request through sales and get it taken care of as a hotfix.
The level of support justifies the price.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Personally, I have used Cisco ASI and F5 devices. Pulse Connect Secure was already in place at this company when I arrived, so for this company there was no reason to test or use another solution.
How was the initial setup?
It was not very difficult to deploy and can be done in minutes. They have very good documentation so you can always rely on it for answers. However, the time for deployment will differ depending on the skill and experience of the user who is deploying it. The deployment is pretty fast if you're just doing the regular SSL VPN proxy connection. If you're doing something more complex, it will take around two days. If you're doing an automation configuration for the first time and have never done it before, it is difficult because you have to read the documentation and train. At maximum that would take a week. Once you are used to the UI, it will be a matter of minutes.
What was our ROI?
The return on investment is utility. It services all our needs so we can better service our customers.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost of the product is high, but worth it because of the utility and great product support.
What other advice do I have?
I can safely say this is one of the best solutions I have seen for VPN access. It can achieve what other vendors may not be able to. This product will train you about exactly what an SSL should be. You can leverage it to do whatever you wish, the way you wish to do it. This is the solution if you want a perfectly scalable product for your enterprise that can help your mobile users and integrate with the latest technologies.
I would rate it a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Pulse Connect Secure is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
As I only use Pulse Connect Secure on my laptop, I'm unsure of how scalable it is, but if all employees within my organization use it, then it should be scalable.
How are customer service and support?
I never spoke to the technical support team of Pulse Connect Secure. I only speak to my company's IT Team.
How was the initial setup?
Pulse Connect Secure is a solution that's easy to set up.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
About the pricing for Pulse Connect Secure, I have no information on that because I don't pay for it as an employee, but there should be an agreement at the company level.
What other advice do I have?
From what I know, I'm using the latest version of Pulse Connect Secure because the IT department keeps on updating the software automatically.
More than fifty thousand employees use Pulse Connect Secure in my organization.
What I would tell others looking into using the solution is that it's easy to install and use, so why not use Pulse Connect Secure?
My rating for Pulse Connect Secure is eight out of ten.
I'm a user of Pulse Connect Secure, not a partner.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
