A robust and reliable data replication and integration providing real-time, heterogeneous data movement that significantly streamlines development and ensures cost-effectiveness
Pros and Cons
  • "One feature that stands out for me is the data center capability."
  • "A clean and user-friendly graphical interface based on common design principles would be beneficial."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for a project involving data integration from two distinct sources within our factory. One source was an Oracle database, while the other was a MySQL database. Additionally, we incorporated data from a cloud-based Teradata system that Oracle had acquired. Our task involved configuring the data to create a unified data warehouse.

How has it helped my organization?

It's an incredible tool, as it's quite impressive to construct the gateway. The process is surprisingly quick, and it has been around for a considerable period. I would say it operates seamlessly, eliminating the necessity for any data transformation or Excel-related tasks. You can simply input the data and retrieve it effortlessly. The gateway allows for easy management, providing clear insights. It's truly reliable and stands out as an excellent tool.

What is most valuable?

One feature that stands out for me is the data center capability. Leveraging Azure servers, we can effortlessly synchronize data between servers, whether it's from one source to another. This is done seamlessly without the need for additional configurations, just a simple pump to facilitate the process. Another noteworthy feature is its adaptability to changes in the source, such as the addition of a new column or details in Oracle. There's no necessity to modify subsequent processes; a service adjustment suffices, streamlining the workflow. Its reliability is commendable, and maintenance is both straightforward and efficient. Additionally, it facilitates customization for specific market needs. Overall, it is not only user-friendly but also easy to comprehend in various aspects.

What needs improvement?

Having a graphical interface would greatly enhance the tool. A clean and user-friendly graphical interface based on common design principles would be beneficial. While the current interface is functional, incorporating a more visually intuitive design, perhaps inspired by widely used interfaces, would make it even more straightforward. Looking ahead to future releases, there are specific features I'd appreciate having. One such feature is the incorporation of pipelines, similar to those in Java, for seamless integration. Additionally, configuring for the Amazon Cloud is currently not straightforward; it often requires adding Python code to customize integrations. I would like to see an enhancement in this aspect, making the configuration process more straightforward and less reliant on intricate coding, particularly during meetings or collaborative sessions.

Migrations are fast but heavyweight skills needed to use it
Pros and Cons
  • "What I have found the most valuable about GoldenGate is that it does real-time and no-downtime migrations. Its migrations are fast. There are not many tools like it on the marketplace."
  • "The problem with GoldenGate is it is very complex to use. You need heavyweight skills to use it."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for consultancy, more specifically for moving customers' data from on-prem into the cloud. We do this in conjunction with our product. We do not have to pay extra for the Oracle Enterprise Manager because our software can manage the GoldenGate software.

What is most valuable?

What I have found the most valuable about GoldenGate is that it does real-time and no-downtime migrations. Its migrations are fast. There are not many tools like it on the marketplace.

What needs improvement?

The problem with GoldenGate is it is very complex to use. You need heavyweight skills to use it. When there's a problem, you have to delve quite deeply down to this sort of data layer where the problem is.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle GoldenGate for about two years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The performance of the product is second to none. There are not many products out there that can compete at the level they can. The only problem is that GoldenGate is very expensive. So, if people only want to use it for migrating into the cloud, for example, they could be laden with a lot of heavyweight software they never use.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

GoldenGate is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We have not used GoldenGate's technical support too much. We have only asked them a couple of questions. Our experience was good. I have not had anything negative come back.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before switching to GoldenGate, we had some experience with the AWS Database Migration Service.

How was the initial setup?

GoldenGate is quite difficult to set up. The process can take you a few days.

When it comes to maintenance and things like patch updates, it's relatively straightforward as long as you're paying the support fees. You get that as part of the license.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it internally. We currently have six consultants working with this product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think that the price for one CPU with a computer is about $17,000. A small solution probably needs at least four CPUs and up to eight. That will add up to $68,000 to $132,000. You can't go that much lower than that.

If you are not using our product, you have to use Oracle Enterprise Manager and I think that's about $3,000 per CPU as well. Overall, you could be looking at up to $24,000 on top of the GoldenGate license.

It's quite on the expensive side, but if you want that kind of monitoring, that's what you have to use.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Amazon's tools usually have low data footprints and simplistic type migrations. There is a limit to what they can do and how long they take to do it, particularly in Oracle. With GoldenGate, everything is a lot faster and can be done in real time with low downtime, which is the key thing.

What other advice do I have?

Make sure it's the right tool for the job you need to do. In-cloud migrations, particularly database migrations, account for about 12% of an overall cloud migration project. Within that 12%, probably 90% of those non-production and low data footprint databases could be handled by tools like AWS Database Migration Service. However, when you can't take the system down for very long, or you've got lots of databases, it can take a long time to migrate them unless you use a tool like GoldenGate. However, using GoldenGate requires extensive skills for management and configuration.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

A stable solution that can be used for homogeneous and heterogeneous data migration
Pros and Cons
  • "Since the world is going towards open source, the solution's heterogeneous data migration feature is very useful."
  • "The solution's licensing price is very expensive and could be made more competitive."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle GoldenGate for homogeneous and heterogeneous data migration.

What is most valuable?

The solution supports large-volume databases. Since the world is going towards open source, the solution's heterogeneous data migration feature is very useful. The solution is helpful as the databases need to be available as DC and DR.

What needs improvement?

The solution's licensing price is very expensive and could be made more competitive. If I want to convert an Oracle database to a Postgres database, the schema conversion and the database transformation do not happen since it is purely a replication tool. It would be helpful if the solution could include features wherein databases can be converted from open source to Oracle and Oracle to open source.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle GoldenGate for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is a scalable solution that manages a large volume of data. Oracle GoldenGate is extensively used in our organization.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution through an in-house team. We have a large DBA team comprising 10 to 15 people with various database skills who deploy the solution for us.

What was our ROI?

With Oracle GoldenGate, our technical use cases of DR (disaster recovery) have been met.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay a yearly licensing fee for Oracle GoldenGate, which is very expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the latest version of Oracle GoldenGate. Oracle GoldenGate is a suitable solution for people seeking a scalable, robust data transformation platform.

Overall, I rate Oracle GoldenGate a nine out of ten.

Easy to set up, scalable, and has good technical support, but data consistency is challenging, and sometimes processes get abended
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle GoldenGate features work fine, which is what I like about it. I also like that it's scalable, easy to set up, and has good technical support."
  • "The main problem of Oracle GoldenGate is that sometimes, the processes get abended. Data consistency is also challenging."

What is our primary use case?

We're using Oracle GoldenGate primarily to check data consistency, replication, and reporting.

What is most valuable?

Oracle GoldenGate features work fine, which is what I like about it. I also like that it's scalable, easy to set up, and has good technical support.

What needs improvement?

The main problem of Oracle GoldenGate is that sometimes, the processes get abended. Data consistency is also challenging. For example, my team's problem with using Oracle GoldenGate is that occasionally, you'll notice missing rows on the table, and it's hard to find that data.

In the future, an additional feature I want to see in Oracle GoldenGate is the microservices feature.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle GoldenGate for the last three years, and I'm still using it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, Oracle GoldenGate is fine. It's a seven out of ten for me, stability-wise.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is scalable, and there's no issue with it scalability-wise.

How are customer service and support?

I have experience contacting the technical support team for Oracle GoldenGate, and there was no issue with it. It's pretty good, so support-wise, it's a four out of five for me.

My company also has in-house support for the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company uses Oracle GoldenGate because it is bundled with other Oracle products.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle GoldenGate is simple to set up.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle GoldenGate is a high-priced solution because it follows the core-based pricing model versus the software-based pricing model of other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

My company is using Oracle GoldenGate.

In the company, Oracle GoldenGate is used in two environments. One is for data replication, and the other is for reporting purposes. In general, a total of fifty people use the solution.

My rating for Oracle GoldenGate is a six out of ten, mainly because of the price factor.

I strongly recommend Oracle GoldenGate to anyone who has servers and needs to do reporting. It's a solution that has no issues for the purposes I mentioned.

I'm a user of Oracle GoldenGate, not a partner.

A product with an easy initial setup phase and a reasonably good support team
Pros and Cons
  • "The product's initial setup phase was very simple."
  • "It is not a very stable tool, and you need to monitor it perfectly."

What is our primary use case?

I used Oracle GoldenGate once to integrate two tables in the last twelve months. I also used the solution to integrate two tables from IBM Big Data Analytics to the Oracle Database Services on the cloud.

What needs improvement?

The major problem in Oracle GoldenGate is the monitoring part. If you need to use the monitoring feature of Oracle GoldenGate, you need to pay a lot, meaning it is very expensive to use the plug-ins from Oracle, so sometimes a user needs to avoid using it. A user directly needs to use the scripts to monitor the integration, which works perfectly. Sometimes, a user finds it more difficult to discover the problem, though solving the problem is easy. It is difficult to discover what was the problem with the integration using Oracle GoldenGate since the logs were not very clear. With Oracle GoldenGate, the documentation was not very clear, even for the parts related to the table or DDL. In general, Oracle GoldenGate can't deliver good feedback from the logs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Oracle GoldenGate. My company has a partnership with Oracle.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is not a very stable tool, and you need to monitor it perfectly. Sometimes, I have faced some situations with the solution, owing to which I rate the solution's stability a six out of ten. It is not a very stable tool as sometimes it stops without any reason.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten since you need to install Oracle GoldenGate on ACFS. When used with the product's documentation, the integration capabilities ensure that the product's scalability features are used.

How are customer service and support?

I had to contact the technical support team of Oracle GoldenGate whenever I faced issues with the product. There were no problems with Oracle's technical support team.

I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I used to use Oracle Data Integrator and a solution from IBM, but I don't remember its name.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was very simple.

The solution can be deployed in a day, and it can be installed on the cloud or on an on-premises model, as it is a simple process. It takes a day to integrate some of the tables. Sometimes, deploying the tool on an on-premises model takes a day or two because you need to install the software and the patch.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive product.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle GoldenGate is a good product. There are some problems with the product, but you need to test some situations and include all the details in your tests before putting it in production to prevent the product or services from being stopped without any reason. Users should also ensure that the monitoring part is increased with some scripts.

I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.

Enables to replicate data across different data centers and different technologies, but it is expensive and not easy to use
Pros and Cons
  • "We can replicate data across different data centers and different technologies."
  • "The product is not easy to use."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to replicate operational databases. We replicate the information from critical databases to non-critical databases. We use it for reports and transformations and to present it to other services.

What is most valuable?

We ensure that the data is replicated from one type of database to another immediately. It helps us with reporting, providing information to end users, and data management. We can replicate data across different data centers and different technologies. We like this function.

What needs improvement?

The documentation could be improved. The product is not easy to use. The knowledge required for the product is high. There are open-source products in the market that are easier to use than Oracle GoldenGate. We faced challenges to expand the solution and get more technologies. It is very difficult. We struggle with the licensing cost and the need for a knowledgeable resource. We need an open-source solution that is easier to adapt and work with.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s scalability a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support must be improved. When a vendor wants to reduce the cost of a support team, they have a first level of support with less knowledge. The escalation process is really slow. It takes ages to escalate issues to higher layers of support. The case has remained at the first level for a long time. It is typical of Oracle. We have complained directly to Oracle several times regarding the support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

How was the initial setup?

The product is easy to deploy since it is on the cloud. However, it is not easy to manage. The deployment time has been reduced, but the configuration and tuning are costly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The tool is a bit expensive. It is not that elastic.

What other advice do I have?

It is a legacy process, and we need people with a lot of knowledge to do it. We can scale all the technology we need because we do not have the license. We update and perform security management for the tool. We have a group of five to ten engineers in our technical team. We cannot expand the tool easily. It is expensive. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reliable, never crashes, and is quite powerful
Pros and Cons
  • "It is quite scalable."
  • "The solution costs a lot."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for the exchange of data between two databases. It's used for replication and some processes.

What is most valuable?

This is a powerful tool.

It is stable and offers good reliability. The server never crashes.

It is quite scalable.

The initial setup is very easy.

What needs improvement?

It's pretty close to perfect. There are no areas we see that are in need of improvement.

It is not very easy to use, however, for what it does, it's not too difficult to manage in general.

The solution costs a lot.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is quite scalable. It easily expands.

It's not a product for the people, for the client base and therefore, there aren't a large number of users, per se. It's a tool for exchanging data. Nobody can access it apart from infrastructure people.

How are customer service and support?

I've never had a need for support. It works quite well and I have not needed help troubleshooting.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was not at the company when the organization chose this solution. I'm not sure what was used previously.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is very straightforward to set up. It's not overly complex. I'd rate the implementation process nine out of ten in terms of ease of setup.

The time it takes to deploy depends on the platform. For example, a Linux or Oracle database may take a few minutes up to one hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's an expensive product. It's not cheap.

The solution charges are based on the type of CPUs. If you are using IPM or HPE, or Linux, pricing may be different. The cost also varies according to the agreement itself. Companies can try to negotiate costs.

What other advice do I have?

We're an Oracle customer.

I'd rate the product eight out of ten. We're mostly happy with its capabilities.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
