Solution reduces time-to-value; high ROI
Fivetran has room for improvement in data pipeline observability. The Fivetran logs are fairly basic, compared to, for example, the insight Fivetran gives into helping users understanding the performance of data pipelines. So I think their observability into the pipeline itself could be improved. In addition, Fivetran is in the very early stages of allowing other companies to access its metadata API, but that's something that could use improvement, and I know that they're working on right now. We use a separate tool for "reverse ETL", which is the opposite of what Fivetran does; it pushes data from your data warehouse back out to business applications. If Fivetran pulls data from those same applications, they should also enable users to push it back. I would love to do both ETL and reverse ETL in the same tool. It would be nice if Fivetran offered both their regular offering plus the reverse ETL option as well.

Performs real-time replication without data loss, but we cannot do much automation
The setup with the classic GoldenGate architecture was easy. Oracle has now moved to Microservices Architecture. It is a real pain. There are a lot of new things we have to learn. I rate the ease of setup of the classic architecture a seven out of ten. For Microservices, I rate the ease of setup a three out of ten. The deployment takes a couple of hours. We need one system administrator to deploy the tool. We need to maintain the tool. We are a team of four people. We need at least three people for maintenance. The time taken for maintenance depends on how big the environment is. We spend a lot of time on maintenance because our environment is big.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Fivetran is remarkably easy to use; I haven't encountered any other data integration tool that is as user-friendly."
"You can manage all of your connectors individually, which gives you a very good ability to trace which one of your ETL processes is running and when."
"The general data ingestion is valuable. It's used for a lot of data. It provides about 90% of the data we use in our data warehouse without needing data engineering."
"The user interface is mostly UI-based, eliminating the need for a lot of coding."
"The ease of usability is the most valuable feature. It's very easy and quick to set up. It also has a central hub as opposed to GoldenGate which is one direct interface. For GoldenGate I would have needed three interfaces whereas with HVR I have a central interface that manages everything."
"The product has some seamless connectors, which are readily available."
"The simplicity of the solution is its valuable feature."
"The solution is stable. We've never faced any stability issues."
"What I like most about Oracle GoldenGate is that it supports cross-platform migrations. For example, Oracle GoldenGate could pump data from one type of system to another such as the data from Oracle DB to SQL Db2."
"It scales well. You can either have it working in with the databases, or you can move it outside. It's got the ability to parallelize up, so you can certainly extract and replay the data from your databases in parallel. So it does have horizontal scalability. That is probably one of its stronger features, the ability just to automatically parallelize the replay and playing of data to allow to scale to large volumes."
"You can put data together from a few databases into one database or the other way, from one database into several. It transforms data in real-time."
"It is quite scalable."
"It moves the data as you set it up, and it works. I am also very impressed with its stability and scalability. It is not super feature-rich, but the new releases have more functionality. It recently had more native integrations with Oracle Database. If you are using it against an Oracle database, it has a lot more functionality."
"The product is reliable for data integrity."
"Many of the features of Oracle GoldenGate are valuable. We use Oracle databases and this tool is from Oracle, making it have superior compatibility."
"The product's microservice architecture is scalable."

Cons

"Fivetran could improve in the area of customization, especially in how they socialize their tools."
"Fivetran should add more connectors because its competitors, like Airbyte, have more connectors."
"Some of the pain points we're looking at are trying to integrate some of the items in the Microsoft stack, so SharePoint and Excel, and then some of the newer Azure services."
"We experience cost issues because Fivetran is charged on a usage basis. When you reach a certain level, the tool should focus on reducing the costs. The solution is expensive when you are moving gigabytes and petabytes of data. It should also focus more on REST APIs and webhooks."
"An in-line data quality checking capability is missing"
"The solution is very expensive. I would like to have a better integration of the solution with Azure."
"The interface needs to be more user-friendly."
"The customization could improve because Fivetran gives more thought to people who don't want to manage analytics workflows rather than engineers who want to be able to customize pipelines more thoroughly."
"It is not a very stable tool, and you need to monitor it perfectly."
"It should be easier to integrate this solution with non-Oracle databases, including cloud-based solutions hosted on Azure."
"The GoldenGate license is very costly."
"The product lacks some features and it's expensive."
"It's stable but you have to know how to maintain it. That's why it's not 10 out of 10 for me. There are some bugs, there are some issues here and there. All of a sudden your process is not working and you have to figure out why, and sometimes it's not so clear."
"GoldenGate is expensive. It's costly because this solution is unique in our market. The GoldenGate Cloud Service is cheaper than the on-premise solution."
"The process of transforming the data between two different databases is inefficient and needs to be improved."
"IBM CDC has one central control while Oracle GoldenGate has two controls. In IBM CDC we can do all things in frontend. The solution needs to incorporate a feature where we can connect it to a standby database."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"In the first year, we were given a very good discount. It was approximately 20,000 Euros per year. In the third year, we purchased credit for two years and the price was 33,000 Euros per year."
"When you have a lot of workflows and complex use cases, pricing goes down as you use it more."
"Fivetran is very expensive, and its database-driven pricing model is outdated."
"I don't have the exact information, but I know it is high, and it is on a yearly basis. There is no additional cost for what we're doing. We're always open to doing things cheaper, so we might potentially implement a different solution."
"The solution is affordable."
"I can't give exact amounts because that's based on usage, but it's more expensive than some of its competitors."
"The product is reasonably expensive"
"The pricing model is okay and mid to large companies will not have an issue with it."
"We have purchased corporate licensing to use Oracle GoldenGate."
"The price is high. Consequently, when clients or customers acquire the solution, they tend to utilize it to its maximum extent due to this factor."
"Licensing for Oracle GoldenGate is paid yearly."
"Oracle GoldenGate is a high-priced solution because it follows the core-based pricing model versus the software-based pricing model of other solutions."
"The return on investment would make it a worthwhile deal."
"The price of Oracle GoldenGate should be lowered. It is expensive compared to other solutions."
"We pay a yearly licensing fee for Oracle GoldenGate, which is very expensive."
"The one feature that I think Oracle could perhaps consider is, at the moment, the Veridata option is an extra cost. Golden Gate is an expensive product. You pay a lot for the best. But not including the Veridata license to prove that everything is working correctly... The big improvement for me would be to have that license built in. That would take it to the next level. That would make it a much better product. You may want to look at buying term licenses if you've just got a single migration to do. In that situation, you might want a term license for perhaps a year to save a lot of money, rather than buying a perpetual license."
