Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring gives us complete visibility without the need for storage.""The data collection from our VMs, containers, databases, and backend components is valuable.""It's a very easy-to-use solution.""I find the monitoring console very helpful. With one click, I can see how we are performing, and at the same time, I can see what data is flowing.""The tool is efficient in collecting, monitoring and evaluating logs.""The most valuable feature in this solution is the log searching.""The ability to create custom dashboards is one of the best features and that's typically why most people deploy Splunk. Users can create dashboards for just about anything.""We haven't really experienced any glitches or bugs."

"The level of discovery-based configuration that lets us auto-configure the monitoring for various systems is a valuable feature.""The solution allows you to configure and customize how you want to collect information from servers or other systems.""Its overall flexibility is most valuable. When our customers have some custom applications that are not necessarily covered by the community or a standard monitoring tool, we use Zabbix to build our own modules with our own templates. This feature has been useful in using Zabbix for infrastructure and IT monitoring. It has also been useful for industrial equipment monitoring. Zabbix is very lightweight. It is efficient in terms of performance because it doesn't use a lot of resources.""Setup was straightforward. Initial deployment took two or three months.""The most valuable feature is service assurance.""Dashboard and the customization of the items and triggers are the most valuable features.""The most valuable features of Zabbix are flexibility and a single interface for different types of monitoring.""We use Zabbix to monitor our organization's IT infrastructure and workstations. We don't use Microsoft Intune since it's expensive. The tool's real-time alerting system has proved crucial for us, particularly when a new device joins a network that is not one of our own devices. It notifies us about the presence of this new device, allowing us to investigate further. Additionally, it alerts us about disk usage, memory usage, and the software installed on the machine."

Cons
"It does not have a user-friendly interface and it is difficult to use.""Splunk would be better if some tools were integrated to be able to take action on security or network concerns.""Splunk could be better integrated with configuration manager solutions so we can automatically resolve issues without human interference.""The solution should have more sensors regarding fiber intelligence for security measures.""It would be useful if they provided some help pages. If you don't know too much about the tool, there should be more documentation readily available. It would be useful if they had a help button embedded in the solution so you could ask questions and get answers.""The cost needs to be re-examined. It's extremely expensive to run. It's also expensive to expand. That's the number one complaint all of my customers have when it comes to Splunk. It's way too expensive compared to other solutions.""The product collects a lot of data but it does not assure that it collects all of it.""There is a lot of room for improvement with the automation."

More Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring Cons →

"Implementation is always tailored to the customer and the kind of information we need from the client to carry it out can make them very uncomfortable. Sometimes the clients are not ready to share it.""Zabbix claims that there is an auto-discovery process but my team member was facing difficulty and was told that it's not really automatic, and there are some manual steps.""The integration of the product is not so easy, especially when it comes to the application database.""The main problem with Zabbix is that you have to spend time writing templates for all of the products that you have.""Zabbix can use better documentation and support for troubleshooting.""I would like to see a more flexible mobile client, and better HA out of the box.""In the next release, I'm hoping for features targeted towards larger users with more customizable options. Despite this, I think pre-canned reports that can be used straight out of the box would be beneficial rather than having to configure each report individually. Additionally, a deeper dive into software configurations on the machines would be useful, although I understand there may be challenges in implementing this due to scripting requirements. More documentation would also be appreciated.""Sometimes, the documentation is a little bit written in Estonia – a country in Europe. The language barrier and translation to English can sometimes make it difficult to understand what they're trying to get at. It's just a language thing."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
