A very user-friendly tool that offers great scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's technical support is very good."
  • "Cisco has a history of problems with the area of web filtering, because of which my company sometimes had to change the vendor and the appliance."

What is our primary use case?

I use Cisco IOS SSL VPN in my company. Though it is a complex product, it is flexible and shares similarities with one of the products I have experience with, so in general, I feel it is a good solution. The tool is very easy and user-friendly to use.

In our company, we saw that clients who use VPNs require almost the same or common functionalities from any product. The use cases are more related to the location of the clients because Cisco is a vendor that serves mostly clients or customers in the USA. In the European market, our company uses more of Fortinet. Our company does many Cisco installations in the USA.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are not something that the VPN clients of my company simply experience. I appreciate that with Cisco, if you need some documentation, solution, or supply, there are many people who can provide some information.

What needs improvement?

From my perspective, Cisco has a history of problems with the area of web filtering, because of which my company sometimes had to change the vendor and the appliance. The aforementioned area needs to be considered for improvement in the product. Previously, in our company, we used Trend Micro, and later, we switched to another solution. In our company, we changed many vendors in the last ten years. If you want to implement a solution, you need to follow the new implementation procedure, so from VIX to IM, there are many changes.

In general, the pricing of the product should improve, and it should be made easier to deploy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Cisco IOS SSL VPN.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

In terms of stability, the tool doesn't offer users enough reach.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is very good.

More than 1,000 people use the solution in my organization as it is a product meant for enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is very good. There are no issues with the technical support team. When you want help, you can contact the technical support team, and there are many support team members available to help you.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was complex because of the more granular nature of the process.

The time required to deploy the solution varies because the area involving the deployment of the firewall could be very easy and can be completed in an hour. If you deploy a firewall solution for a big company, maybe you can reach 6,000 rows of configuration, so time is needed. There are some configurations with just 1,000 rows. With Cisco, one may have to take care of just 100 rows of configuration.

The solution is deployed on the cloud and on-premises.

One manager and one engineer are required to take care of the deployment and maintenance of the product.

What about the implementation team?

I used a software extension for the product's deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

With Cisco, there is a free solution or a licensed version of the solution with a set of endpoint services.

What other advice do I have?

Those who plan to use the solution should test it before implementing it in their environment. I recommend the product to those who plan to use it.

I rate the overall tool an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

I use Cisco IOS SSL VPN to work from home remotely.

The split panel functionality is much better in the Cisco IOS SSL VPN than in the Aruba VPN.

What needs improvement?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN is more expensive than the Aruba VPN, but it is worth the money.

  • "They could provide the cloud-based as-a-service model with monthly rental payments."

What is our primary use case?

We use Cisco IOS SSL VPN as a failover mechanism for connectivity across various locations, including SSL stores, divisional offices, and regional offices. It uses the topology features for the same.

How has it helped my organization?

The platform provides value and benefits to our organization through efficient and effective communication. It has a positive impact on operation visibility. Our workforce can access the data and utilize it for progression. It helps us save a lot of time and money.

It is a stable platform. I rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around 1000 Cisco IOS SSL VPN users working at our headquarters and remote offices.

How are customer service and support?

We never had any complicated problems beyond our capacity to resolve them. Thus, we never had to contact the technical support team. The products are stable. However, when we contacted them for other aspects, they replied promptly.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. The only issue encountered was related to configurations for Azure Networks. Despite this specific hurdle, the overall implementation was robust.

Firstly, we created local data networks at our headquarters and remote offices. Later, we started configuring the VPN.

We had a team of five people responsible for the Cisco VPN system, involving tasks such as logging in, troubleshooting, and ensuring smooth operation. The hardware proved robust, with no reported issues, downtime, or the need for warranty-related equipment replacements.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The platform is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

Cisco VPN enabled secure access for our team to various critical applications. With SSL installed on all PCs, the team successfully accessed the ERP system, performing transactions and generating necessary reports.

Our technical team encounters challenges while configuring different protocols or security features for the system.

We have a good experience using the product. It offers an essential combination of efficient financial and technical aspects. I rate it a ten out of ten.

A highly stable and reasonably priced solution with flexible technology
Pros and Cons
  • "Cisco IOS SSL VPN is reasonably priced, and its technology is flexible."
  • "The solution's configuration could be made easier."

What is our primary use case?

We configure the solution to remote connection to our workspaces, and we configure it as a next-generation firewall. We use the solution for some rules and access policies, and we configure the VPN client for internal and external connections.

What is most valuable?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN helps connect personal computers or notebooks to our environment. Cisco IOS SSL VPN is reasonably priced, and its technology is flexible.

What needs improvement?

The solution's configuration could be made easier. Cisco IOS SSL VPN has different service scenarios and features. For a different feature, we must configure a different type of settings and deploy them in external environments, which users find hard to deploy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cisco IOS SSL VPN for seven years.

Cisco IOS SSL VPN is a very stable solution.

What about the implementation team?

Deploying the solution can be done very fast, in around 30 minutes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is reasonably priced, and we have around 50% to 60% discounts from Cisco.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Cisco IOS SSL VPN to other users.

Overall, I rate Cisco IOS SSL VPN an eight out of ten.

An affordable and stable solution that is transparent and free from errors
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is quite transparent."
  • "The solution does not give us options if the connectivity to one server is not available."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the solution for access control and internal servers.

What is most valuable?

The solution is quite transparent. We hardly have any issues.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, a few VPN servers do not work, and we need to switch to another server. The solution does not give us options if the connectivity to one server is not available. The product can be more proactive, but it can't be because it relies on the internet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is quite stable. I rate the stability a nine and a half out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. I do not see scalability as a challenge because it is a client-server. I rate the scalability an eight or a nine out of ten. All 300 employees in our organization use the product. We might increase the number of users depending on the number of employees.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite straightforward. The deployment took less than ten minutes. The client was simple. It is a plug-and-play solution. It is a client-server-based tool.

What about the implementation team?

The product can be deployed in-house. We do not need many people to maintain the solution. The IT team can manage it.

What was our ROI?

We have received quite a good ROI on the solution. It is very valuable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product costs less.

What other advice do I have?

The intranet-related resources like Jira or Confluence with cloud servers are connected. Cisco cannot do anything if the connectivity from the VPN server to our site is broken. It is up to us to resolve it. I would recommend the solution to others. The product is quite simple to use and free from errors. It is quite stable. Overall, I rate the tool a nine and a half out of ten.

An easy-to-use tool offering scalability and stability at the same time
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable solution. In my company, we haven't faced any issues related to the product's stability. I rate the product's stability a ten out of ten."
  • "Multi-factor authentication in Cisco IOS SSL VPN has certain shortcomings that need improvement."

What is our primary use case?

My company uses the product to get Cisco AnyConnect client to connect to our internal network.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are its ease of use and the fact that you can apply multi-factor authentication on it.

What needs improvement?

I use Cisco Duo for multi-factor authentication, and Cisco has enhanced it to meet our company's requirements. Multi-factor authentication in Cisco IOS SSL VPN has certain shortcomings that need improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cisco IOS SSL VPN for ten years. I am an end user of the solution. I don't remember the version of the product we use in our company.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. In my company, we haven't faced any issues related to the product's stability. I rate the product's stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution, and we haven't encountered any scalability issues with the product in our company. I rate the product's scalability a ten out of ten.

There are around 200 users of the solution in my company.

Cisco IOS SSL VPN is an extensively used product in the company.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted the solution's technical support, and I feel they are responsive and fast.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Cisco IOS SSL VPN is not straightforward since it's a bit complex but not too hard for users to do.

The solution can be deployed in a couple of weeks.

The solution can be deployed on a hybrid cloud.

Regarding the deployment process, our company uses the normal deployment procedure provided by the manufacturer of the solution.

The technical staff, consisting mostly of administrators, are required to deploy and maintain the solution.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation phase of the solution was carried out with the help of a consultant.

What was our ROI?

Our company has not calculated the exact ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing cost of the solution is on a yearly basis, and it is expensive compared to other solutions in the market.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Cisco IOS SSL VPN to other people.

I rate the overall product a ten out of ten.

A stable and easy-to-deploy solution that can be used to connect to servers
Pros and Cons
  • "Cisco IOS SSL VPN is stable, and once we connect, we don't face any issues and can do our work."
  • "Cisco IOS SSL VPN doesn't support the configuration of multiple VPNs."

What is our primary use case?

We use Cisco IOS SSL VPN to connect to our servers. Our local IT team and vendors use the solution to connect to our servers.

What is most valuable?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN is stable, and once we connect, we don't face any issues and can do our work. We also have integrated a multifactor authentication called Cisco Duo.

What needs improvement?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN doesn't support the configuration of multiple VPNs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cisco IOS SSL VPN for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Around five users are using Cisco IOS SSL VPN in our organization. The solution is extensively used as our vendors continuously use it on a daily basis. I use the solution when I'm outside the office.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Cisco IOS SSL VPN is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

The solution was deployed in our organization through an in-house team. Cisco IOS SSL VPN's deployment was quite fast. However, deploying Cisco Duo took some time because the vendor had to call us, and then we had to arrange to share the password on a phone call.

Initially, we received an email from the vendor mentioning the URL of our server. The domain and the port were mentioned, and then we had to allow that in our network. Once we allowed it in our network, we had to install Cisco's client. They had given us a link for downloading it. After downloading it, we had to deploy it on whichever PCs were responsible for connecting to the network.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment with Cisco IOS SSL VPN because it comes with a lot of security and networking bundled in one package.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cisco IOS SSL VPN comes with a cost-effective subscription. For example, we got around 25 licenses with the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the latest version of Cisco IOS SSL VPN.

A normal person with some networking knowledge can deploy and maintain Cisco IOS SSL VPN because it's not that complicated.

Cisco is one of the best solutions as far as routing and networking are concerned. Cisco still has some configurations to be done using the command line interface (CLI). That is a challenge if you are not familiar with CLI. The GUI interface is quite simple, and it's evolved from what it was earlier. It's good from the security point of view that you need to do those configurations using CLI.

Overall, I rate Cisco IOS SSL VPN an eight out of ten.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

A stable and scalable solution for VPN dial-up with easy setup

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a VPN dial-up. That's all. We are working from home or anywhere else from the office. We connect using the VPN.

What needs improvement?

The scanning part is one of the key features that Cisco should provide. Secondly, FortiClient has more features than Cisco. FortiClient allows you to connect their VPN over any machine. We can change the FortiGate firewall, but we need a separate license in Cisco.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Cisco IOS SSL VPN for a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

You have to purchase SSL for every VPN license from the vendor side. Everything depends upon the licensing.

3000 people are using this solution. There is a hybrid model in my company. Most of the employees work from home, or company or country. They are connected over the SSL VPN.

I rate the solution’s scalability a ten out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have also worked with the FortiClient. FortiClient is much more versatile, easy to configure, and is more functional.

How was the initial setup?

The solution setup is easy for everyone. We must run the platform and upload the configuration file to every agent installed on the system. Every agent is easier to proceed.

What other advice do I have?

When I was in Pakistan, my company used Cisco products and the firewall. The ransomware came into our environment and breached the Cisco firewall. It passed along the Cisco firewall and then ran CMC connections. With respect to reliability, I rate it around seven.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
