Good performance, compares well with WebSphere, and has extensive online documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The only difference is that Weblogic is lighter and consumes less memory."
  • "There are always ways to improve. But it's getting better every time, with every new release, and every new patch, it's getting better."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle WebLogic Server to run the IBM Maximo application.

We can deploy, Maximo to WebLogic and configure it there.

I set everything up. You only need the hardware, and I'll handle the rest.

What is most valuable?

I would not compare WebSphere and WebLogic because both servers are really good. The only difference is that Weblogic is lighter and consumes less memory.

However, once you have set up both of them, they work perfectly.

There are always bugs, such as the recent bug with log4j, but they're both good web servers. I can make use of either one, it makes no difference. It's just a different setting, but I'd say the quality is the same.

I am satisfied with this solution, as well as WebSphere.

What needs improvement?

There are always ways to improve. But it's getting better every time, with every new release, and every new patch, it's getting better.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle WebLogic Server is quite stable.

How are customer service and support?

I usually solve my problems on my own. I Google it. I do the research, find out what other people are having problems with, otherwise look to Oracle for solutions to some of them. I was always able to Google it and find the solution.

I have never had to contact Oracle or IBM for support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with WebSphere, WebServer, Apache Server, and a little bit with SAP NetWeaver. I have a lot of experience.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend using whichever is cheaper. When you purchase Maximo, you receive WebSphere for free. Why would you pay more for WebLogic? Both are interchangeable, and I don't see a difference in their performance.

I would rate Oracle WebLogic Server a nine out of ten.

Stable, easy to implement, and has very helpful support services
Pros and Cons
  • "We've got the support we require. If ever there is an issue, can just call on Oracle and they will assist us."
  • "The cost could always be lower."

What is our primary use case?

We have many applications, Java applications, which we are deploying. We also have integration applications, such as Oracle Service Bus which we are deploying. We are using Oracle WebLogic to assist in deployments.

What is most valuable?

It's a very good, very stable server. We haven't faced any issues. That's why we have been using it.

The solution is scalable.

We've got the support we require. If ever there is an issue, can just call on Oracle and they will assist us.

The initial implementation is not difficult.

What needs improvement?

The cost could always be lower. If they could offer the same features at a lower price point, that would be ideal.

For how long have I used the solution?

We started using the solution in 2011.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the stability to be excellent and the product is very reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It offers very good performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is good. of a company needs to expand, they can.

We have 30 to 40 people using this product within our organization.

How are customer service and support?

Oracle has excellent technical support. We know that if we have any issues we can always call them and get help. We are satisfied with the level of support we receive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we were using Oracle as well as Oracle actually acquired BEA. BEA was actually WebLogic.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. It is straightforward. It is not complex.

We have servers and admin-level people who can do the installation. On our machine, development is very easy. It takes minutes to install.

For the deployment process, we did not need more than ten people.

What about the implementation team?

We can handle the installation process ourselves. We do not need integrators or consultants to come in and assist.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of the solution is okay, however, it could always be less. The cost is always something you need to be aware of with Oracle.

We pay Oracle a yearly licensing fee.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have evaluated another solution that may be open-source. We have planned to move to open-source, although this hasn't happened yet. We want to move to an open-source stack.

What other advice do I have?

We are just a customer and an end-user.

We are not on the latest as the latest version that was released was 14. We are still on 12.

I'd rate this solution at an eight out of ten.

I'd recommend the solution to other users if they can afford it.

Integrates well, scalable, but difficult to customize
Pros and Cons
  • "The technical support is responsive. They are always ready to help by various communication channels, such as Zoom calls. However, sometimes it will take a while because when we are dealing with a problem, they need to look at the logs and configuration. A lot of the issues are related to the configuration that they need to look at thoroughly before they can give us a solution and it can take a few days depending on the type of problem."
  • "If you want to use Oracle products to the fullest with enhanced customizations, you need to get trained. There is enough documentation and the flexibility to configure the application to your needs but you will need to spend more time gathering the knowledge."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Oracle WebCenter content to store our enterprise documentation. We want to create a database warehouse to hold all the document information and to allow someone access to any of the documents. This will be a single gateway where someone can check-in and check-out the documents.

What is most valuable?

When we installed Oracle's complete suite it comes with multiple tools and we did not need to separately install WebLogic because all these solutions run under WebLogic itself. Once we install it, we have an administration console to enhance it. There are a couple of other related Oracle products that it can integrate with it. For example, if you want to include Oracle WebCenter Capture (WCC) or Form Recognition (WCFR), these are different modules. We have only done a couple of integrators and that has been for WCC and WCFR.

What needs improvement?

If you want to use Oracle products to the fullest with enhanced customizations, you need to get trained. There is enough documentation and the flexibility to configure the application to your needs but you will need to spend more time gathering the knowledge.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle WebLogic Server for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the WebLogic Server is good. If you are dealing with multiple versions, you may need to work on some patch activities, but other than that it is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very good.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is responsive. They are always ready to help by various communication channels, such as Zoom calls. However, sometimes it will take a while because when we are dealing with a problem, they need to look at the logs and configuration. A lot of the issues are related to the configuration that they need to look at thoroughly before they can give us a solution and it can take a few days depending on the type of problem.

How was the initial setup?

The solution was part of an Oracle suite and was installed with it which was easier than installing it seperately.

What other advice do I have?

Those wanting to implement this solution will need to check what their desired functionality specific to the implementation is and if it in fact the solution can satisfy the purpose. For example, if the solution can operate without customization, and if so, you can relax and do the implementation easily. However, if your implementation requires a lot of customization changes, such as changing the behavior or the skin, it will not be straightforward. You will need to spend a lot of time getting the knowledge to do the customizations.

I rate Oracle WebLogic Server a six out of ten.

For administration purposes, it offers a robust and easy-to-understand interface.

Valuable Features

Technologically, the product offers excellent performance and high reliability. Because it is an application platform on which applications and products are deployed, these are probably among the most important features. For administration purposes, it also offers a robust and easy-to-understand interface. Performance monitoring tools are also comprehensive.

Use of Solution

I have used it for four years.

Deployment Issues

It is a complex product with many "moving parts". Installation, upgrade and patching are probably the most challenging administration tasks. Individual components may need to be upgraded to support the deployed applications, and yet these components and their patch level have to be compatible with each other. One should not underestimate the human administration requirements for the product, although these are not that far out of line when compared with similar products. This can be somewhat complex technology.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Oracle Technical Support tends to be excellent in general, and that extends to this product as well.

Initial Setup

Initial setup is straightforward, but as noted, ongoing maintenance requires a significant investment in time, effort and technical administration expertise.

Implementation Team

As an IT consulting firm, we handled implementation in-house. A full range of in-depth skills are needed, especially in troubleshooting issues and for ongoing maintenance. One needs not only senior-level WebLogic Server experience, but also experience in the related technologies such as Java, virtual machines, Linux OS, among others.

ROI

Once again, the model for Oracle technology in general, applies to this product. For the most part, Oracle is a technology leader in the functionality of the products it delivers, such as this application server, the database server, BI and analytics and others. But they are also among the more expensive for initial licensing and for ongoing product support. The products likewise require a high level of expertise. It is clearly a high-end, enterprise-scale solution, and pricing reflects this. At the same time, absolute costs and ROI based upon successful deployment and use of technology are not exactly the same.

When connecting to Oracle RAC Database, the Active Grid Link feature guarantees Fast Connection Failover and Connection Load Balancing.

What is most valuable?

There are many valuable features in Oracle WebLogic Server. For sure, production redeployment is one of the best, in order to deploy the new version of your application without removing the old one. Also, Exalogic optimizations provide the best performance for I/O and thread management when using WebLogic Server on Oracle Engineered Systems. Finally, the Active Grid Link datasource: When connecting to Oracle RAC Database, it guarantees Fast Connection Failover and Connection Load Balancing.

Another important feature is workload separation that can be achieved using custom Work Managers or Multitenancy (in the new 12.2 version).

How has it helped my organization?

Thanks to WLST, we were able to standardize the deployment of standard WebLogic components (for example, JMS server, migratable targets, datasources, ...).

So, we can improve the quality of change management and reduce the time and the effort needed. We use also WLST to stop/start WebLogic domains and we apply best practices after domain creation.

What needs improvement?

The one thing I really miss is the possibility to define a metric extension (on Enterprise Manager) that uses a custom WLST script on a managed server target.

Oracle WebLogic Server is not fully integrated with Oracle Enterprise Manager. Most of the operations are available from Enterprise Manager, but you still need the WebLogic Administration Console as a graphical interface.

Oracle Weblogic Server has its own web interface (Administration Console) to monitor/change the configuration of a weblogic domain.

Not all the operations can be done using Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, but, in particular, I would like to create metric extensions using wlst scripts to implement custom metrics.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for about five years. We started with the 10.3.3 release.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The most critical issue is with Oracle Service Bus. There are limitations for configuration or deployment changes in production environments; in particular, when activating changes in SB Console, during high load, sometime deadlocks are generated inside the JVM, which requires restarting the JVM itself.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have not encountered any stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not encountered any scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is 7/10.

Technical Support:

Technical support is 7/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use different kinds of application servers. The choice of type depends on the situation and on the environment.

How was the initial setup?

The basic installation is simple. The Configuration Wizard helps you to easily create your domain.

After that, you need to define a set best practices (JDBC transaction log, active grid link datasource, JTA and so on).

What about the implementation team?

We implemented it by ourselves.

What was our ROI?

WebLogic provided the foundation to install ExaLogic.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing this product, I did not evaluate other options.

What other advice do I have?

If you are interested in Oracle Fusion Middleware products (Business Intelligence, Oracle Service Bus, Identity Management, etc.), I suggest before installing a standard WebLogic Server: investigate the installation, the configuration, the high availability and backup/restore. Also don't forget to apply patchset updates and recommended patches, to avoid known bugs or issues.

Stable and has good integration with other software, but pricing is expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "What I like best about Oracle WebLogic Server is its integration with other software."
  • "Pricing for Oracle WebLogic Server and other Oracle products has room for improvement because the pricing model isn't easy to understand. I'd like to see lower pricing from Oracle WebLogic Server. That's the main issue with the solution."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle WebLogic Server on our Flexcube application, particularly for development and testing purposes.

How has it helped my organization?

Oracle WebLogic Server has improved the organization through better dashboards and data integration.

What is most valuable?

What I like best about Oracle WebLogic Server is its integration with other software.

What needs improvement?

Pricing for Oracle WebLogic Server and other Oracle products has room for improvement because the pricing model isn't easy to understand.

I'd like to see lower pricing from Oracle WebLogic Server. That's the main issue with the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have five years of experience with Oracle WebLogic Server.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle WebLogic Server is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have no experience scaling or attempting to scale Oracle WebLogic Server.

How are customer service and support?

As we've not experienced any issues with Oracle WebLogic Server, we haven't contacted technical support yet.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I didn't use a different solution before using Oracle WebLogic Server.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle WebLogic Server has a standard setup. The process wasn't too easy or too difficult.

The installation of the Oracle WebLogic Server was completed within two days. It was planned for a weekend; then, it was up and running by Monday.

What about the implementation team?

Oracle WebLogic Server was deployed by an Oracle specialist, a third party not affiliated with my company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have information on the exact licensing cost of the Oracle WebLogic Server.

What other advice do I have?

I'm using the latest version of Oracle WebLogic Server.

Thirty people use Oracle WebLogic Server within the company. Some administrators and some developers.

Two developers handle the deployment and maintenance of the Oracle WebLogic Server, but one's a backup.

At this point, there's no plan to increase the usage of the solution.

I would recommend Oracle WebLogic Server to others.

My rating for Oracle WebLogic Server is seven out of ten because of some difficulties people have experienced in dealing with the solution.

Is stable and scalable but not easy to manage
Pros and Cons
  • "It's a very stable solution."
  • "The administration is hard, and it is more complex to use than others."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle WebLogic Server on our e-commerce webpage to manage and monitor it.

What is most valuable?

I mostly like the stability. It's a very stable solution.

It is also scalable and has a user-friendly UI.

What needs improvement?

The administration is hard, and it is more complex to use than others.

It could be more user friendly and easier to manage.

Also, starting off the applications in Oracle WebLogic Server takes a long time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have one and a half years of experience with this solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's easier to scale up or scale down. The UI is user friendly.

What other advice do I have?

My advice is that you should test the performance after the installation. You may struggle while starting the application.

You can analyze deeply how to manage Oracle WebLogic Server and how to set up the configurations. It's a little complex.

On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this solution at six.
