Q&A Highlights
Question: What are the differences between Palo Alto Networks Panorama and AlgoSec?
Answer: Hi Dear Anouar, I want to explain something to avoid misunderstanding. Palo Alto Networks (PAN) Panorama is the management dashboard for Palo Alto Firewalls; which is provided by PAN and comes with a license. However AlgoSec is used as a Firewall Analyzer tool to analyze firewall rules according to their severities, configuration mistakes, shadowing or redundant rules, etc. If you want a solution to analyze your firewalls and harden them; you can consider preferring a firewall analyzer solution. If you want to manage your firewall configurations, create rules, routes, etc., you can prefer to have PAN panorama; instead of managing the firewalls by connecting each of them separately.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"AlgoBot is a brilliantly, simple idea that lets us give our IT internal customers a way to check if rules are already in place before asking for more.""There are some important and really nice features that I want to mention about AlgoSec. The most useful feature is instantaneous AFA reports, that you do not have to wait (at least one week or even more for a more accurate one) to get optimization recommendations about policy as many other vendors.""The most valuable feature is traffic simulation because, with this function, it has become more practical to know if something is released or blocked in my environment.""We can easily make our firewall flow change requests using the web interface.""It is very useful for PCI DSS compliance.""One of the quick wins is to view our device status easily, with out-of-the-box dashboards and charts.""We are currently in a rule base performance improvement process and AlgoSec is an invaluable tool to accomplish this.""It helps us to streamline our firewall rules, identify risks, and provide better visibility. This product has significantly saved the time and human efforts in creating and deploying firewall rules. It is now easier for our cybersecurity team to analyze firewalls rules and ACLs, using them in a more efficient manner."

"We use the solution for centralized monitoring.""The most valuable feature of Palo Alto Networks Panorama is the simplicity of rule management. Both this device group and template management are very easy to use.""The entire ease of use is most valuable. If you're managing firewalls locally with PAN-OS, the look and feel of Panorama is the same. So, you don't have to relearn another product. If you're used to managing firewalls from Palo Alto, you can easily use Panorama to manage them. It looks and feels the same.""Our team has the option to make configuration changes at any given time.""In Panorama, installing the policy, and pushing the policy, it's quite seamless.""It's helpful that the solution allows us to control all the firewalls from one device.""Panorama is very easy, easy to administrate, and easy to control.""The most valuable features of this solution are that it works better than a normal firewall, easy to explorer all of its features, and it has the Log Collector mode. This mode allows us to store our logs for two years in the solution itself."

Cons
"Support can be improved as there are time delays for resolutions.""A more granular approach and the possibility to separate data and show relevant data to specific key roles or key users would be a great achievement in future releases.""One important thing they should improve is their support level. We have a lot of trouble with the basic enterprise support level. They are very slow to respond and solve problems.""We are using AlgoSec directly against our Cisco Firepower. At first, AlgoSec didn't work with Firepower. It didn't know how to read the logs. So, improvement has been made. Now, the feature that was available on the older generation firewall is available on the current one, but this is a problem which has already been dealt with.""I would like to seem improvements in performance and software stability.""In the VMware platform, sometimes the application is frozen and we have to reload the machine.""The HA solution is not good.""The blacklisting and whitelisting of IP addresses should be improved. There are many false positives."

More AlgoSec Cons →

"The central firewall management could be better.""There is a need to improve the upgrade process. When we are upgrading the solution we are facing some issues with Elasticsearch services. Every time we upgrade it takes a long time to become stable.""The solution is extremely expensive. You can integrate it with other Palo Alto products, however, it ends up being too much.""Price is probably one of the biggest things that we struggle with, specifically with Palo, and that's across their whole portfolio.""They need to do less bug-related releases and create versions that are stable for at least six months at a time. I don't find this issue in other solutions like Cisco, Check Point, FortiGate, or others. Those just provide a patch if there is a bug and we don't have to worry about downtime.""I would like to have better analytics.""My company's getting whatever it needs from Palo Alto Networks Panorama, but in the cloud, there's an issue with CPU management, and that's an area for improvement. Though the normal data traffic doesn't go through the management interface, whenever there's an increase in the throughput, CPU management becomes high. If you increase the load, CPU management spikes, and it's what needs to be taken care of in Palo Alto Networks Panorama.""The solution's utilization of network ports makes things as complex as possible."
