I use this project because I work for an IT company in France and we perform a lot of migration work, and we often use OpenText Migrate.
We perform a lot of migration of Microsoft Active Directory, of Microsoft Windows NT domain earlier, and a lot of migration with Exchange Server, and migration tenant to tenant now. I do some migration from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 or similar projects. So, a lot of infrastructure and messaging infrastructure product migration work is involved.
OpenText Migrate is a very good product because it is an older product and they have a lot of tools, and they have a lot of experience on the migration tools. We love to use OpenText Migrate products.
We often use OpenText Migrate. Before, we used BitTitan to migrate some mailboxes or other similar tasks. But now we use only OpenText Migrate on demand.
For the hookup with workstation, we use PA PowerSync. PowerSync is a tool which has a partner with BitTitan to migrate the workstation.
C2C is OpenText. It's Carbonite. It was a backup for the mailbox and Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, or similar applications.
We don't use it. The only tools that we use to encrypt data are the legacy products provided by the cloud provider. For example, we use Microsoft to encrypt the disk, but it's an embedded solution. We don't use another type of solution.
I have been doing migration work for 30 years. I do migration since I was younger. So, I know a lot about migration, and I do a lot of migration in my life, and often with OpenText Migrate tools.
I don't know because we never use, or we don't need to use the support. So, we don't have a lot of issues and when you have an issue, we can find the information on the website. As we know the product, it doesn't have many bugs, so we don't need to call the support. So it's very difficult to say something about the support because we don't use it.
We don't have a lot of VMs for the customer, so we don't need to use a tool to automate that.
We are satisfied. We had the answer, we have some contact, so the guys are nice. So, we are very satisfied with this.

It's a good product because we know this product before it was bought by OpenText. Before it was DoubleTake in memory. So, we used this product before.
The pricing for the customer is always too expensive. So, the pricing is expensive. But the feature is good, so we can save a lot of time, so we save money. For the migration, it's a one-time spending.
I think it's okay because when we need to use this product, we save a lot of time. So, even if it's expensive, we save a lot of time. So, it's not very expensive. So I think it's good.
OpenText Migrate is our primary tool. I know they have a lot of other products like DNS and tools from cybersecurity, but we don't use it at this time.
On Demand Recovery, for recovery, we use another tool from OpenText. It's C2C. It's a product to back up the mailbox.
I don't know what I can find at this time. So maybe yes, but the last time I used it was a few months ago. It does the job, so I don't have an opinion on this currently.
They don't have a lot of marketing actions. We know this product because we are an OpenText partner for the C2C. But it's another division. It's another part of the company. So we don't have a lot of information. So, I think they can improve the communication for the end-user because a lot of customers do not know OpenText, and they don't know they can provide this type of tool. My overall rating for this product is 9.
The primary use is to monitor any type of migration. For example, if you have one landscape on the VML virtualization platform and the second on Hyper-V, then two different virtual environments are present. In this instance, you cannot use native tools for the migration in case an application path is present. You have to use a third-party tool, such as Carbonite Migrate, that can do the migration from one platform to another platform when you switch the setting.
When B2B migration is also not possible through native tools, this tool can be used. In P2P migration, if you have a customer who uses the physical infrastructure, prior to migration you will need to create a similar environment in the other data center to which the data will migrate. Carbonite Migrate can be used for this purpose as well. We can then take an image of the current system and run it onto another system as a test. There are multiple use cases for this tool.
Carbonite Migrate works well in Windows platform migrations and in the case of a VML platform. The migration is smooth in Windows environments.
If you want to do B2B migrations or P2P migrations, this solution can be used in any environment, whether it's public, private, or on-premise. It's an any-to-any migration solution.
Migration in RHEL and Linux environments can be improved. During RHEL migration with multiple data areas, you have to create a similar source environment at the destination. This can be challenging because you have to install it, create the VM, install over it, and mount it at the mount point. Only then can you do the migration.
As a prerequisite in the case of a Windows platform, the .NET framework may cause some challenges as well. This can be done only in the latest version and is not possible in the earlier versions. We could do the migration for a customer with the older version but only after upgrading to the newer version of the .NET servers. This requires application downtime, and if the customer does not want any downtime during the migration, it can be very challenging.
I would also like to see improvement in the data analytical loopholes in terms of Linux migration.
This tool is generally used only once a year. Once the migration is complete, this tool is not in the picture.
We have faced a few issues with technical support. During working hours, we were able to find the support we needed. However, we have struggled when problems have come up after 10:00 p.m.
In Windows environments, the initial set up is good, but in Linux environments, it is challenging.
In terms of pricing, I think it's an expensive tool.
On a scale from one to ten, I give Carbonite Migrate a 7. It is a good third-party migration tool because it can be used with clients who have heterogeneous environments. It is a good tool for any-to-any migration.
Technically, we use this product in regards to cloud data infrastructure migration; however, these are all things that are driven by the customer. If they are interested in a solution, we make suggestions and provide recommendations. When it comes to cloud data infrastructure challenges, mostly we are attempting to achieve cloud migration from an infra point of view. That's where tools like Carbonite Migrate and RiverMeadow come in handy.
We use Carbonite Migrate to migrate our customer's data. The migration of data refers to application data and application infrastructure resources — how many Physical/Virtual servers and CPUs, VM’s, Containers, etc. We also focus on Applications data server dependency. In other words, if your application has 10 different servers, then 10 individual servers need to be migrated Afterward, Carbonite Migrate creates an original migration plan for the new environment and lays out the steps to accomplish this. As data migration can be risky, often it creates an automated pathway in order to reduce migration risk. Let's say a customer has a data problem, we then use these tools to gain access to the customer's environment, run an assessment and come up with the best migration route, identify the blockers and in return, they can create a migration plan. That's how we use this solution.
Some of the tools relating to multi-cloud migration need to be improved as they have a very limited capability at this point in time. These tools are suitable for one-to-one migration scenarios but they are not fit for multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud environments. I would like to point out that I don't have a hands-on very large scale production implementation experience, as that is the job of our infra team.
As I mentioned earlier, we find it very difficult to use these tools in a multi-cloud environment but they work well for single-cloud environments — from an on-premise environment to the public cloud. These tools are quite limited, making things much more complex in a multi-cloud environment.
They should add a feature that supports multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud environment migration properly. The world is going to be very different five years from now, how will they support these kinds of container-based migrations? Currently, infrastructure as code is very limited. It's not as simple as just moving the server or data. The customer wants you to move the entire application, exactly as it is, and then deploy it. From that perspective, these tools offer only part of the solution, they are not fulfilling the holistic need, which the customer or organization needs. As of now, Carbonite Migrate is helpful on an infrastructure level. If we had to move 100 applications across a multi-cloud environment, then this solution would not work.
In the cloud-world (the migration part of it) there needs to be better automation. Let me explain: automation refers to your infra, app, and data. Together, these three components combine and automate will provide you to deploy faster on any cloud platform. As of now, this tool doesn’t fit too much into a multi-cloud environment cloud data migrations. Together, these three components combine and automate it allowing you to deploy it. As of now, these tools cannot deploy it into a multi-cloud environment. That's where the challenge is; that's for other tools. We need to see what this product can do in terms of app, data, and infra. It is automated from the infra point of view, but not in regards to the app and data.
Other vendors understand this problem and have taken the necessary steps to address it. In short, multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud environments pose a problem for this solution. I would like to know how I can take the automated path — data, app, and infra all together. That is something they need to enhance.
Recently, I have seen a lot of other companies implementing AI-based automation, where more things are taken care of by AI itself, and not people. Many of these migrations are too complex for humans to analyze and form solutions. It is better to use AI platforms to create recommendations and then automate them, that way you can reduce the burden. Currently, the migration time is vast, from six months to one year, it would be impossible to do 100 application migrations. This is very time consuming and needs to be improved.
I am not sure about the price of the solution, but it really depends on how much migrating you tend on doing: customer licensing, the way you implement it, how much workload data you're trying to move or migrate. They charge you based on that. Certainly, the cost is a factor where the customer is concerned. I am going to make a general remark: all of the cloud migration tools generally overcharge. They should bring down the cost but unfortunately, the licensing costs are really high.
Often, customers would like to go with an open-source solution to bring down the cost. We also try to see which vendors are complying with the open-standard as their products are cheaper than their competitors. But generally speaking, these tools are on the more expensive side.
Overall, out of 10, I would rate Carbonite Migrate a seven. It's quite popular — we are using it, a lot of customers are using it. From an architecture point of view, I'd rate it seven out of ten.
We initially used Carbonite for cloud migration, specifically for moving data from one cloud to another. We moved from a RACS-based environment to VMware.
The solution is user-friendly.
Carbonite failed when moving GIS data. Therefore, scalability is an issue as it struggles with migrating heavy data, specifically GIS data.
We experienced no issues with stability and there were no breakdowns.
Carbonite lacks scalability. If it cannot migrate heavy data, it is not scalable.
Their support team is good, although I am unable to comment on the response time as I did not handle the interactions directly.
