Easy to summarize data, easy to scale, good reporting features, and excellent technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "All of the data science features in terms of unioning and joining data together are valuable."
  • "The only weakness I would say is on the visualization side of having that dynamic incapability."

What is our primary use case?

I use this solution for KPIs and trending.

What is most valuable?

All of the data science features in terms of unioning and joining data together are valuable. The formula tools are good, and it provides an easy way to summarize data.

It has some really good, solid, basic reporting functions.

It's not as robust as a lot of the dynamic interactive tools, but it certainly gets into the more static reporting very effectively.

What needs improvement?

The only weakness I would say is on the visualization side of having that dynamic incapability.

I know that it is dependent upon having the on-premise and cloud server environments, but even there, the product functionality is somewhat limited.

This would reduce the need to integrate it with other products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Alteryx for a couple of years.

I am not using the latest version. I am one version out, and I am in the process of having it updated to the latest.

I generally stay up to date with each release.

I am using the desktop version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I don't think that there any more issues with stability than would be expected for a product of this type. Those occasional things happen, but it's nothing that is significant.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Alteryx is easy to scale.

We have three people who are using this solution in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is very good. They get high marks.

I would rate them a ten out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had used JMP, which is a product by SAS, and it really didn't have any capability of doing the automation that Aletryx has, other than some really bespoke programming language. It is a type of script language.

It is very awkward to learn and use it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is definitely straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely advise others to give it a fair look. It's a great product.

It is not marketed as a solution to all different types of aspects of analytics. I'm not going to downgrade it just because that's not within the scope of what they're marketing the product for.

Based on what it has been marketed for, I would rate Alteryx a ten out of ten.

Easy to use and doesn't require coding for complicated functions
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable and scalable solution."
  • "They should make the solution user-friendly for nontechnical people by giving specific names to the options."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution to build an ETL workflow.

What is most valuable?

The ease of use is the solution's most valuable feature. It doesn't require coding for usage. I only have to drop and drag the available options to perform complicated functions.

What needs improvement?

They should make the solution user-friendly for nontechnical people by giving specific names to the options. That will be helpful for them to understand.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability as a ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. We are two users who created a workflow using it. We use it once a month or two.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate the solution's pricing as a ten, as it is highly priced.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution as a nine.

It collects data, manipulation and some Geo-spacial mapping.
Pros and Cons
  • "The tools are built-in. You just plug and play, drag and drop, once you understand how to use the tools, it is easy."
  • "I think better visualization would be helpful to this solution."
  • "It is a little bit pricey."
  • "It seems to me that it is not always user friendly."

What is our primary use case?

It collects data and manipulation and some Geo-spacial mapping.

How has it helped my organization?

It provides opportunities to do some pretty complex tasks easily, without having to worry about the Java. The tools are built-in. You just plug and play, drag and drop, once you understand how to use the tools, it is easy.

What needs improvement?

I think better visualization would be helpful. In terms of data extraction, during the sequel queries of servers as an example, you can structure your sequel query and it's fine, very readable, but once you run it, it crashes into one complex single line, and makes it very difficult. Then you you almost have to go back to management studio, and run it through management studio and put it through restructuring, and it just seems to me that that's not very user friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For our purposes, the scalability is fine. But, I think that scaling it for a big enterprise would probably be an expensive endeavor.

How is customer service and technical support?

I would rate the tech support a 7.5 out of 10.  They do not necessarily provide lots of hands on support themselves, instead they farm it out to partners and forums.

How was the initial setup?

The learning curve for implementation was a bit steep. You pretty much have to teach yourself as you are setting up the solution. Once you do that, you are OK.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is a little bit pricey. The desktop version is cheaper, it is on a one year license. And, if you want to do anything on an enterprise name it is quite expensive. The current pricing model may get to be too much in three to four years time.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also considered DataBricks.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise that you should ask yourself what you need and want, and do a one-month trial.

I rate the scalability of Alteryx a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used the support. There is a helpful online community where we can search for answers to our questions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used other solutions but they were not as good as Alteryx. We switched because of the scalability, ease of use, community, and workflow.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Alteryx is not difficult.

I rate the initial setup of Alteryx a nine out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license price of the solution is expensive.

I rate the price of Alteryx a nine out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for the solution is merging multiple data tests and utilizing various data sources.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our organization by enhancing the speed by which we can pull data.

What is most valuable?

It is efficient in optimizing our ability to get information.

What needs improvement?

The solution can be made more affordable.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for approximately two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. I rate them a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. However, based on the price, it can be pretty costly, and organizations tend to limit the availability of that software to its users.

How are customer service and support?

We have not had any experience with customer service and support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution a ten out of ten. The solution is good but can be more affordable. On the other hand, it is a great tool because of the community and can integrate various tools, data and types and software.

Stable, scalable, and offers excellent drag and drop features
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has excellent drag and drop functionality. There's no need for coding."
  • "The solution just lacks in terms of data visualization. That is why we use Tableau and Qlik in our organization. They help to pick up the slack. If data visualization was added, Alteryx would be a very good tool, and much more complete."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for ETL purposes and also for a lot of our modeling and scheduling.

What is most valuable?

The solution has excellent drag and drop functionality. There's no need for coding. There are nodes ready for us to use as well. It makes everything extremely easy. The user-friendliness is a big draw for us.

What needs improvement?

The solution just lacks in terms of data visualization. That is why we use Tableau and Qlik in our organization. They help to pick up the slack. If data visualization was added, Alteryx would be a very good tool, and much more complete.

The solution could maybe use a connector as a direct input for MySQL or something like that. Right now, we use ODBC connectors for MySQL. If a direct connector was available on this product that would be very helpful, especially for our organization.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. We don't have issues with the product crashing and we don't find there are bugs and glitches that affect its quality. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very smooth. If a company needs to expand the service, they should be able to do so easily.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is great.

There's a very good community that surrounds the solution. However, you can also reach out to Alteryx directly as well. They're just a call away if you need them. I would say our organization is satisfied with the level of service they provide.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is a bit on the expensive side. We use an Alteryx Server and Designer as well. The server itself is a bit pricey.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

Our organization is dealing with large amounts of data, yet we do not have the money to buy a Microsoft product like SQL. Alteryx is a pretty good alternative to handle the ETL part of the workload.

We've been largely satisfied with the solution.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten overall. We've been happy with the results that have been provided to us so far. If the solution offered a connector as a direct input for MySQL, or better data visualization, I'd rate it higher.

Geo features have made spatial mapping large retail universes possible
Pros and Cons
  • "It allows for manipulation and automation, which has greatly reduced the amount of time required per project."
  • "Geo features have made spatial mapping large retail universes possible."
  • "A feature which allows the user to be able to click on an output (in a file browser) and see the creation of the module would be fantastic."
  • "When a process completes there is a notification, but the notification does not include the process's name."

What is our primary use case?

It handles multiple large data sources, and prepping/manipulating the feed to the Live dashboards for internal and external distribution.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows for manipulation and automation, which has greatly reduced the amount of time required per project.

What is most valuable?

Geo features have made spatial mapping large retail universes possible. The basic package of manipulation tools are the tools that my team use the most. It makes lengthy Excel processes seamless and lighting quick in comparison.

What needs improvement?

A feature which allows the user to be able to click on an output (in a file browser) and see the creation of the module would be fantastic. Also, when a process completes there is a notification, but the notification does not include the process's name.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

Has everything I need, but the community forum should be easy to use
Pros and Cons
  • "It has everything that one needs. Whatever you want to do with the data can be done with Alteryx."
  • "I mostly used it for flat files, but I have many colleagues who reported that to tune a query, in case they want to directly connect to the database, there is no option to optimize the performance of the query, as we have in Informatica."

What is our primary use case?

It is mostly used for data validation rules. For example, for many legacy systems files, we check whether the count in one file is matching the logic that we have in another file. If it doesn't, then we fill that particular data load. The ultimate destination for that is a database, but to avoid data mismatch or the garbaging of data because someone didn't put files in a proper format, we are doing the validation with Alteryx. So, it's basically for data cleaning and removing some line characters from the data in the files so that there are no data issues while using SQL Loader.

How has it helped my organization?

I haven't worked much with Alteryx because my primary work is in Informatica. I work with it only when I don't have any option or it is too tedious to work in Informatica for a particular file or schedule a load. For example, if the load will fail in Informatica, or it will not allow the rest of the stream to continue, I use Alteryx. In Alteryx, I have that option. I can have a dedicated flow that will run for that particular file. For my 100% ETL work, 10% work is in Alteryx, and 90% is in Informatica. So, I haven't explored it much, but whenever any requirement comes, I work on it. So far, I was able to utilize it for whatever I need. Everything I needed was already there.

What is most valuable?

It has everything that one needs. Whatever you want to do with the data can be done with Alteryx. However, we haven't implemented it on a large scale because we don't have a physical server. We have a virtual server for this, and there are limitations to that. So, we use it for smaller data chunks, not bigger data volumes. It is mostly for files, not for databases.

What needs improvement?

There is a community for Alteryx, but it is so spread out. For example, if I face an issue with Informatica, I have Informatica forums that keep on adding to that. They have a very cohesive structure when it comes to the issues and their error messages. They are very easy to use for Informatica issues, but in the case of Alteryx, the information is too spread out, and it is difficult to find the answer to a particular issue that someone faces. If Alteryx can organize its forum and the issues in a better way, it will be easy for developers.

I mostly used it for flat files, but I have many colleagues who reported that to tune a query, in case they want to directly connect to the database, there is no option to optimize the performance of the query, as we have in Informatica. With Informatica, we can use hints and other things and they directly hit the database, but with Alteryx, that is not the case. So, when it comes to database connectivity, the performance is not as good as a flat file as a source.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Alteryx for around 10 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It never crashed in the last 10 months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I assume it would be scalable without any issues. Most of my work has been related to files without any databases or other connectors.

We have more than 5,000 people using it. This is a free tool across our organization. So, everyone uses it in case they want.

How was the initial setup?

I only installed Studio on my laptop. The server was installed way before I joined. So, I can't comment on that, but the Studio setup was easy. It was almost like Tableau.

What other advice do I have?

It has Excel and diagram functionalities. So, not much technical knowledge is required to use it. If you are aware of both or have Tableau and Excel experience, then you are good to go.

I would rate it a seven out of ten.
