Manufacturing, server room, and office areas of former employer. Switches were great, except in the factory area, because the product is warmer. This was a machine shop with a lot of water-based coolant vapor in the air. This coalesced on cables, etc., and it made things sticky way up toward the ceiling where the switches and Cat 5 cables ran. I suspect that the coolant got into the switch and killed it. We replaced, then did it again.

Product failed in our industrialized environment. We did like the web GUI and SNMP.
Pros and Cons
- "Manageable features, which we heavily used like web GUI and SNMP."
- "Make them tougher and more ruggedized for warmer and Industrial types of environments, and HumiSeal the main boards and internal components."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
They did not because in the factory area they kept failing, otherwise they were fine. That was not good enough after three Cisco and three Netgears all failed.
What is most valuable?
Manageable features, which we heavily used like web GUI and SNMP, except they failed in our environment. Unfortunately, this made them a wash for us. ProCurve switches were what replaced them eventually.
What needs improvement?
Make them tougher and more ruggedized for warmer and Industrial types of environments, and HumiSeal the main boards and internal components.

For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Eventually, we gave up using this product. We switched to Netgear ProSafe switches in the factory. We received the same result. What was weird was the web GUIs of both models failed as did SNMP and other features. Only basic plug and play features of switching seemed to work, but you could not ping the switches (managed models were all we used) and all of the management was dead.
What is interesting with Netgear: They allowed me to open our switch after three of theirs failed in the same way. I went through six switches in less than two years in this factory environment. Netgear allowed me to spray HumiSeal into their switch. I disassembled it, sealed the ports off, sprayed and dried the entire main board, then reassembled it. It still failed in the same fashion months later.
Eventually, we replaced it entirely with HPE ProCurve switches. They have never failed and still run to this day.

A good product that is stable and has a lot of demand
Pros and Cons
- "It is a stable and good product."
- "It should be cheaper. We need a better price from Cisco. Its initial setup and support should also be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We sell Cisco switches and routers. In unmanaged switches, we sell Linksys. In India, there are only a few models available in Linksys. Nowadays, they are only selling Wi-Fi routers and switches in the name of Linksys. Other products are available under the brand name Cisco.
We are using Cisco products for the core banking sector. We are using Linksys products in educational institutes and small enterprises because Linksys products are cheaper than Cisco switches.
What is most valuable?
It is a stable and good product.
What needs improvement?
It should be cheaper. We need a better price from Cisco.
Its initial setup and support should also be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been selling Linksys switches for the past 15 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable.
How are customer service and technical support?
Cisco's live support is not so good in India. It takes too much time. When you send a mail to Cisco or you go for live support, it takes a lot of time to get support from Cisco. They should be faster as well as more knowledgeable and customer friendly.
How was the initial setup?
It is never easy to add a Cisco switch because they only come with a command-line interface. Cisco switches are using the command-line interface because of security reasons, which is okay and not a problem, but they are not easy to install.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is costly. Because of its pricing, customers are not ready to buy Cisco solutions, and they are going for other brands.
What other advice do I have?
In India, 50% of customers are using Cisco, and the remaining 50% of customers use other products. We will keep on using this solution because it has a never-ending demand from our customers.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten. It is a stable product.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Cost effective and good for small businesses but not flexible in terms of configuration
Pros and Cons
- "For a home or small business, the solution offers a very good web interface."
- "It would be ideal if they could do more configurations and offer more flexibility. Right now, it's not flexible at all."
What is most valuable?
The solution is a very good cost-effective product. It has the reputation of a Cisco system, however, it's provided at a much smaller price.
For a home or small business, the solution offers a very good web interface.
What needs improvement?
We've realized that the solution is a very different product from other larger Cisco offerings, even though it's sort-of marketed as a cost-effective alternative for those that need something smaller.
It would be ideal if they could do more configurations and offer more flexibility. Right now, it's not flexible at all.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been working with the solution for about seven or eight years at this point. It's been quite a while.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. That's not a problem. It doesn't have bugs or glitches or suffer from crashes. It's pretty reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
As far as I understand it, the solution isn't too scalable. The hardware isn't really intended to expand out. It works well for a home or small business, however, it's not really acceptable for a large-scale enterprise.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We only really work with Cisco. However, we are currently looking for alternatives.
That said, it's rare we move off of Cisco and work with another company.
What other advice do I have?
We're a reseller. We work almost exclusively with Cisco.
We are also working with Cisco in providing networking, wireless, WiFi, and everything related to them that works within security. We don't work with Meraki, however. We prefer standard networking devices. We're not comfortable with cloud administration.
We work with small businesses and small firewalls when we use this product and we only really use this particular solution on a few of our projects.
On a scale from one to ten, I would rate the solution at a seven.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

We use this solution to expand our data center and software-defined network.
We have around 20,000 people in our organization who benefit from using this solution.
What needs improvement?
The installation should be simplified.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches for five years. We plan on using this solution for the next three to five years.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used to use an older version of Cisco, but we upgraded to the current version.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was complex. Deployment took roughly nine months.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches to other organizations.
On a scale from one to ten, I would give Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches a rating of eight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good pricing and performance, but offers no support in Iran
Pros and Cons
- "The pricing of the solution is very good. It works well within our network."
- "If possible, we'd like to see support in our country, but it will be difficult as we are located in Iran."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution because of it's relatively cheaper price (as compared to other options).
What is most valuable?
The pricing of the solution is very good. It works well within our network.
What needs improvement?
There isn't anything negative to point out about the solution. Like all Cisco products, it's very good.
If possible, we'd like to see support in our country, but it will be difficult as we are located in Iran.
The solution doesn't have rich features and only offers a small support for expander products and protocols.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Cisco products for about ten years and Cisco Linksys ethernet switches for about four or five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is very good. We've never had any issues. There are issues, however, with the Cisco firewall in the network. It may cause crashes, but the Lynksys solution has worked very well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is not scalable in a larger organization network; we prefer to use Cisco Catalyst Ethernet Switches for enterprise-level organizations. For smaller organizations, because of the price, Cisco Lynksys is a better choice.
How are customer service and technical support?
We're located in Iran, and therefore don't have access to technical support for this or any other enterprise solution provider.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very easy.
Deployment times vary and are dependant on design options. However, when I want to implement a basic installation and configuration, it does not take long. I can set up and run Cisco Ethernet solution in less than 10 minutes.
What about the implementation team?
We handle the implementation ourselves.
What other advice do I have?
All of our Cisco products are on-premises deployment models.
I'd recommend the solution for those who are price-conscious and those who are looking for good performance.
I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.
A lot of things can be better with these types of devices, however, it depends on Cisco's policies. These types of products could support more features and protocols in the future. Cisco could work to improve these types of products, by enhancing performance and other related items.

Support for segmenting network into zones, but the price needs to be more competitive
Pros and Cons
- "it's a stable solution. We have not experienced any bugs or issues. Many data centers and enterprise data centers prefer Cisco to any other product because they are very stable."
- "The drawbacks come from support. The tools are rare, but to find someone knowledgeable with Cisco, is a problem."
What is our primary use case?
We don't do the deployment in our environment, we are consulting.
Our clients use this solution for the logical segmentation of the network to the access layer, and remote log switches.
They can also deploy the switches.
What is most valuable?
I like the ability to do the segmentation on the access layer. It allows you to segment the network into a zone or workgroups. By defining the VLAN you can logically separate the traffic. It helps minimize the risk with lateral movement and reduces the attack of Malware within your network.
What needs improvement?
I think that most everyone prefers a GUI rather than working through the command line. They have a GUI but it's not that interesting when you compare it to other vendors such as Check Point.
They should reduce the price to stay competitive. While the Cisco product is good, the pricing is not competitive. People will end up going with other cheaper solutions such as Arista.
The drawbacks come from support. The tools are rare, but to find someone knowledgeable with Cisco, is a problem.
There are issues with the C-Level required to maintain them and then to configure them.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Ethernet Switches and doing technical work since 2010. Now I am doing architectural design work.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's a stable solution. We have not experienced any bugs or issues.
Many data centers and enterprise data centers prefer Cisco to any other product because they are very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This solution is scalable, it's easy to expand this platform.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have not contacted technical support. I haven't done any configurations since 2010, and at that time I felt that it was difficult to find someone who was knowledgeable in Cisco.
How was the initial setup?
I have not deployed this before, but from my research and my experience with Linksys, I think that it would be easy and straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I think that pricing should be more competitive.
What other advice do I have?
If you want to be a Cisco master you need to have a good understanding of the command line and how to use it, which is difficult for some administrators. Many people would prefer solutions that you can configure through a GUI.
It is easier to configure an SPC as opposed to a Cisco switch.
People are finding alternative solutions because of the price. The same happened with Firewall landscapes, people are moving away from checkpoint and Cisco and going with Juniper or FortiGate, because of the pricing and licensing model.
I would suggest that people continuously upskill themselves to remain relevant in the industry.
I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Good for connecting users and very stable, but their performance needs to be improved
Pros and Cons
- "They are good for connecting users. These switches are very stable. We have been using them for three years, and we haven't had any problems."
- "Their performance should be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use these switches only as access switches to connect end users. We mostly use Cisco for all of our infrastructure, so these switches are used everywhere as access switches.
How has it helped my organization?
What is most valuable?
They are good for connecting users. These switches are very stable. We have been using them for three years, and we haven't had any problems.
Having 48 POE ports is a very good feature
What needs improvement?
Their performance should be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
They are very stable. We had to do a restart once in six months or one year, but it's not a problem.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We only use them for connecting users. We have about 200 users.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have opened a case with them for the FirePOWER services, not for Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches, and this is the first time that I haven't got a response. It has been a week since I've sent the request, which was just a question, but I haven't got any response so far. For the previous cases that I had with tech support, they were very quick.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use Cisco Catalyst Switches. Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches require a lot of work as compared to Cisco Catalyst Switches. Cisco Catalyst Switches are much better and more expensive than Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches.
How was the initial setup?
If you have experience in working with Cisco solutions, the initial setup is easy. Otherwise, it may be complicated.
The deployment doesn't take a long time. We already have the guidelines, and we have been doing it and using Cisco for a long time. It usually takes a maximum of one hour to configure the switches. Two people will be enough for deploying these switches.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
They are cheaper than Cisco Catalyst Switches.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend these switches to others. We plan to keep using them.
I would rate Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches a seven out of ten. We are happy with them.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A fast initial setup, easy to configure and good technical support
Pros and Cons
- "It's very easy to configure URLs."
- "The solution's framework and some of the techniques need improvement. I've been watching Aruba, and they have a lot of technologies within the access points. For example, it has a virtual controller to connect all Aruba switches."
What is our primary use case?
I primarily use the solution for configuring Linksys IDs with the lines on Linksys access points. I make a cluster for all access points of Linksys to control them from one master.
What is most valuable?
It's very easy to configure URLs.
What needs improvement?
The stability of the solution needs improvement. There's a problem with disconnecting the network. I have to restart it and set it correctly again. After a while, it disconnects again and I have to report it once more.
The solution's framework and some of the techniques need improvement. I've been watching Aruba, and they have a lot of technologies within the access points. For example, it has a virtual controller to connect all Aruba switches.
Sharing access, sharing Wi-Fi or access IDs would be great.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We've been satisfied with the level of stability of the solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is okay; it covers a large area. Right now, we have about 100 users connected to it.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support has been okay.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use Aruba. We use both solutions consecutively.
How was the initial setup?
For those with IT knowledge, the initial setup is easy. Those without IT knowledge will struggle quite a bit. Certain aspects like using an adapter to connect to the laptop and connect the IP and configure it will be difficult to learn. Deployment and proper configuration only take about 10-15 minutes for those that know what they are doing.
What about the implementation team?
I handled the implementation myself.
What other advice do I have?
I'd advise others to carefully read the datasheet of Linksys and all the tools. It's also a good idea to make a thorough analysis of the company so that you'll know what size you will use and which solution to work with.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
