The default settings of AWS CodeDeploy are highly beneficial for my deployment workflows
There aren’t many improvements that can be made. In one of my projects, I initially didn't implement CodeDeploy directly. Instead, I stored my private key in Secret Manager and integrated it with my build spec to seamlessly work with GCP's Cloud Build. However, after using CodeDeploy, I haven't encountered any significant issues or areas that urgently need improvement. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the features and functionality of AWS CodeDeploy.

Useful to create custom pipelines
Regarding areas for improvement, one significant issue is the lack of maker-checker flows to ensure that newly created pipelines are accurate and tested. We currently use an in-house abstraction over Spinnaker to verify pipeline specs, environment variables, etc. It would be beneficial if Spinnaker could offer this functionality within their product.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"CodeDeploy is quite easy to use within the AWS ecosystem."
"I can integrate it with other AWS services."
"AWS CodeDeploy operates on an on-demand basis. This means that you only pay for the exact duration of the deployment process. Whether it takes one minute, two minutes, or even longer, you're only charged for the time it takes to complete the deployment. You're not locked into paying for dedicated servers."
"You can easily integrate AWS CodeDeploy with multiple services."
"The product's initial setup phase is easy."
"I found the default settings of AWS CodeDeploy to be highly beneficial for my deployment workflows. For instance, when deploying a Node.js application, I manually installed the necessary components on my AWS instance, such as the web server required by developers. Then, I created deployment scripts for starting and stopping instances and performing the deployment itself. These scripts were stored alongside my code in GitHub, ensuring they executed seamlessly with the CI/CD pipeline. Since the project wasn't overly complex, I opted for the default settings, which proved to be efficient and straightforward for deployment."
"The product is easy to use."
"It is very flexible."
"The tool's most valuable feature is its intuitive interface for converting existing Kubernetes specs into working pipelines. It's easy for anyone to deploy anything on any environment when they need to test or deploy for a specific merchant or use case. Instead of going into the specs and changing different variables, they can do it through the UI, which is very useful."
"Spinnaker is used for automating a variety of deployment tasks, infrastructure, provisioning tasks, and all kinds of things."
"The most valuable feature of Spinnaker is the rollback."
"There is a good community around the product that makes troubleshooting possible."

Cons

"I faced some stability issues."
"The support and those things are lacking compared to others."
"Deployment and stability should be improved."
"There will always be room for improvement, however, I cannot think of any specific improvements at the moment."
"AWS CodeDeploy doesn't provide multiple plugins like Jenkins, which is a shortcoming where improvements are required."
"Improvements could be made to AWS CodeDeploy in terms of its agent's compatibility across different operating systems. Currently, there are instances where the agent may not work seamlessly with certain integrations, leading to issues with registering protocols on authorized servers."
"We have faced some issues and bugs along the way when it comes to stability."
"AWS should provide its own templates in the console so that I don't need to go anywhere else to get the template for AWS CodeDeploy or AWS CodeBuild."
"Regarding areas for improvement, one significant issue is the lack of maker-checker flows to ensure that newly created pipelines are accurate and tested. We currently use an in-house abstraction over Spinnaker to verify pipeline specs, environment variables, etc. It would be beneficial if Spinnaker could offer this functionality within their product."
"Spinnaker's configuration setup is too complicated and should be made easy."
"Every time it goes to run a pipeline, it just generates a lot of data, and its database is not exactly tuned out of the box, meaning it is not tuned for high scalability."
"Log-wise, we need to understand why something has failed so that we can understand and try to fix it the moment the issue is reported. The solution could use more robust monitoring."

"The product's price is normal."
