A tool with great orchestration and development capabilities but needs to improve its user-defined functions
In the tool, parallel processing is an area that is contingent, in the sense that you have to be watchful for the cap that you have in terms of computing behind AWS Data Pipeline. You need to always watch for some reason. I am capped with 200 nodes, and if I get to use more than 200 nodes, the AWS Data Pipeline will fail. AWS doesn't state that I have almost gone beyond my limits, and it is allowing me now to go beyond the set limits if I talk to a representative and figure it out. Such aforementioned warnings are not let out by AWS, and they end up failing the nodes if I go beyond the set cap limits.

Streamlines data migration across platforms with cost-effective and scalable solutions
We have the continuous data integration feature, but it does not work very well in our given ecosystem because we have huge data volume, and it reads from archive log rather than the redo sequence. That is where it lacks, so we are not able to do continuous streaming data injection. The ability to handle heterogeneous migrations for our organization is adequate. I do not see a major value add, or see it as a marquee feature. It is a good tool, but we do not have that sort of uses requirement. In my 10 plus years of experience, I do not see that kind of requirement where I have to replicate it in real time. I leverage AWS CloudWatch for addressing migration issues. The major challenges come across CDC. We have created latency filter and everything, but there is no way to control it. Due to the nature of our business, the transactions increase during month end and year end. My transactions are supposed to increase, my workloads on my core system increases, but my DMS is not able to keep up with them, even if I increase it to a higher side. Improvements could be made in AWS Database Migration Service. Because of that, I am moving out of DMS now to a STRIIM solution. DMS works within AWS ecosystem, but they also have to look for third party solutions. Now Snowflake is a bigger player, or Databricks. Something that could be possible as a connector, whether paid or free, but giving as a connector to that ecosystem as well.

"What I find most valuable in AWS Database Migration Service are these features: the full load and continuous data replication to heterogeneous endpoints."
"The solution makes it very simple to migrate the database."
"As the solution is on the cloud, we don't have to worry about the maintenance of software."
"Support is helpful."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."
"One valuable feature of AWS Database Migration Service is change data capture (CDC)."
"Saving the data that is in use is easy."

Cons

"The user-defined functions have shortcomings in AWS Data Pipeline."
"It's almost semi-automatic because you must review and approve code push, which works well. Still, we had many problems getting there during the deployment process, but we got there."
"The price is expensive for a person or student who wants to learn how to use the solution."
"The initial setup can be difficult for beginners in AWS Database Migration Service. You will need the training to complete it."
"It is a very expensive program and you pay a license fee based on the amount of users you have."
"Sometimes we encounter errors, and the error messages from DMS are very ambiguous and sometimes misleading."
"The product's performance could be a little bit better."
"When working with AWS GovCloud, we often did not get an answer in time because AWS seemed more focused on the commercial side."
"AWS Database Migration Service can become complex when testing. Other solutions, such as Microsoft Azure makes it easy to do. There are more steps to complete tasks in AWS Database Migration Service than in Microsoft Azure."
"Years ago, the price was nominal and acceptable for the client to do a migration. Now, prices are challenging, especially with versions continually changing."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the pricing between six to eight on a scale from one to ten, where one is low price, and ten is high price."
"The way we use it, I think it is fair as we're getting a good value for money compared to having a server or some other data pipeline."
"I rate the product price a seven on a scale of one to ten, where one is a high price, and ten is a low price."
"AWS Database Migration Service is the least expensive solution, but is still expensive."
"The pricing is per hour, though I do not have the exact figures. If you have specific questions about the service, a personal support team from Amazon is available, but this will bring in additional costs."
"I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten."
"The pricing can be better and it should be more competitive."
"Cost is the only factor that is challenging."
"Pricing can be improved."
