Intuitive interface and documentation make it simple to build jobs and APIs and logging helps pinpoint and resolve issues quickly
Talend is doing a lot of work at the moment, and it's not there yet, but the whole platform could be managed in a SaaS-type environment. You still need to have the Studio running on a virtual desktop or a PC. They will get to be able to do the whole thing inside your browser, so you don't need to install anything locally. It's down the track, and it's the nirvana that we were looking for in Boomi. But the biggest challenge they have is that the platform is so focused on the Studio for all of its development. They'll probably get there, but they have such a mature Studio client that it's a huge amount of work to get all of that functionality into a browser or SaaS platform. That's pretty much the biggest flaw with the Talend environment—being reliant on the Studio, which needed to be on a local machine. The only other thing is that you have to integrate into an API gateway. We're in Azure, so we use Microsoft Azure Gateway. It doesn't come with its own gateway, which is another sort of big plus side that we saw in Boomi. Talend isn't quite there yet with the API gateway. Other than that, it's bloody hard to find something because it just seems to be all good.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The simplicity of this tool is nice. It has a good graphical user interface. You can also do a lot of generic stuff in the tool. If there is good connectivity to a cloud database, such as Snowflake, and you can have a lot of Snowflake functionality in the tool."
"The most valuable feature of Matillion ETL is its user-friendly graphical interface."
"It has good integrations with Amazon Redshift and other AWS services."
"The most valuable feature of Matillion ETL is the ETL. The solution is open-source which provides advantages, such as good performance and high efficiency. Additionally, it supports three data types which eliminates predefining the data, and we can write script models in Python."
"It takes less than five minutes to set up and delivers results. It is much quicker than traditional ETL technologies."
"Matillion ETL is one hundred percent stable."
"It's been able to do everything we require."
"It's highly scalable. It takes upon itself the Redshift scalability, so it's very good."
"It is user-friendly and the interface is good."
"It is easy to use and covers most of the functions needed. We can use the code without any extra effort. The open source is very good. They have the same commercials with additional connectors. The graphical design environment is also very easy."
"The API integration and big data approach are very good because of how you extract data from JSP files or big data web repositories like MongoDB."
"Open Studio's best features are that it's user-friendly, even for beginners, and very easy to implement."
"Talend lets you do everything — mapping, workflow, and orchestration — in a single place."
"The initial setup of the product was very easy."
"The best thing I have found with Talend Open Studio is their major support for the lookups."
"I can connect with different databases such as Oracle Database or SQL Server. It allows you to extract the data from one database to another. I can structure the data by filtering and mapping the fields. It is very user-friendly. You need to know the basics of SQL development or SQL queries, and you can use this tool."

Cons

"One of the features that's in development is data privacy in the cloud, along with further SAP integration. For connectivity to SAP systems."
"It can have multi-environment support. We should be able to deploy it in different environments. Its integration with SAP connection is not so nice, which should be improved. It can also support an on-prem database."
"There are certain functions that are available in other ETL tools which are still not present in Matillion ETL. It would be good to have more features."
"Going forward, I would like them to add custom jobs, since we still have to run these outside of Matillion."
"I am looking forward to seeing the expansion of the source range for their data loader product."
"Sometimes, we have issues with the solution's stability and need to restart it for three weeks or more."
"To complete the pipeline, they might want to include some connectors which would put the data into different platforms. This would be helpful."
"Unlike Snowflake which automatically takes care of upgrading to the latest version and includes additional features, with Matillion ETL we need to do this ourselves."
"The solution should integrate with a version control system in the subscription versions to make it easy to work with and manage the version control."
"Inter-version compatibility is a problem, and migration projects between versions are required."
"When faced with a challenge, such as the necessity to link up with an unconventional data source like the legacy Cyprus Vision database that wasn't inherently supported by Talend, I had to resort to writing Python code to establish the connection."
"The stability of the solution could improve when running jobs. There can be errors when running projects but in the end, it works well and the errors do not impact the result."
"The security features could be improved."
"There is a need for mastery in some areas."
"The server-side should be completely revamped."
"In version 6.2 we did encounter issues with the job servers and specifically with ESB. Version 6.3 is better but large jobs can cause the MDM server to fall over, requiring a reboot."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I have heard from my manager and other higher ups, "This product is cheaper than other things on the market," and they have done the research."
"Matillion ETL has a pay-as-you-go pricing model of a few dollars per hour of runtime."
"It is cost-effective. Based on our use case, it's efficient and cheap. It saves a lot of money and our upfront costs are less."
"Purchasing it through the AWS Marketplace is pretty convenient. There is a little bit of back and forth in terms of the licensing based on the machine size, but it seems to have worked out well. it is convenient to have it all as part of our AWS billing."
"The absence of licensing commitments makes it easy to experiment with the tool, and if we decide it's not suitable, we can simply stop the ETL instance and cease incurring charges."
"The pricing depends on what edition the customer opts for. For example, the standard edition is priced at $2.00 per credit. And you are only charged when you use it. You're not charged when it's idle."
"Matillion ETL is expensive."
"Its price depends on what you expect. You pay on a monthly basis, but there is a possibility to have special contracts depending on the installation."
"It is an open-source product."
"There are many versions available and one is open-sourced which is free."
"Open Studio has a basic license and additional costs for services, including customer support and technical assistance."
"I am using the open-source version of the solution, so there are no extra costs for any feature."
"The cost for one year for the ETL tools, not for the big data, is 6K per year. It is a good price."
"It is an open-source tool which means it is a free solution."
"I am using the open-source version and it is free."
"The cost, particularly in Africa, is quite high."
