Identifies configuration issues so it doesn't cost money to buy resources which are not needed
The most valuable feature is the right-sizing. For my maintenance weekend, I can schedule it to right-size a subset of VMs every month. That works perfectly for me. It goes out on its own and tells me which machines need to be changed, then it will perform that function. I don't have to do any manual intervention. It runs its own report in the background. Turbonomic tells me ahead of time to prevent resource starvation. Going into the console, it tells me whether actions can be taken, saying, "Do you want to do these now?" Then, I can push a button and Turbonomic will do them. Or, I could simulate a load by saying, "Well, I'm going to add this, what will happen?" It will then tell me what will happen, so I can know ahead of time. It optimizes application performance as a continuous process that is beyond human scale. The solution helps us with troubleshooting issues in certain virtual environments. It gives you good information so you can drill down to different levels. You can get information to help you troubleshoot issues that you are seeing, whether it be storage-related or virtual machine-related.

By moving the Veeam server to a physical server and creating a Proxy server on each of the hosts, we are able to leverage SAN based backup which is very fast.
Veeam is our primary backup system used with the DD2500 for the repository. We use Veeam 9.5 Update 3 on a physical Windows 2016 server with Proxy servers deployed one per host in our HA Cluster. We also use the Enterprise Plus licensing for Nimble Snapshot Integration for backups and this allows…

We have been able to reclaim a significant number of CPUs and improve load balancing
It's been very successful. Before, we didn't know, as an organization, where some of the VMs or platforms were. Now, it's unified our organization to troubleshoot. So far, since we upgraded the product, over the course of a quarter, I've reclaimed in our team, over 2,500 CPUs. That's a significant amount of CPUs, and we're still continuing. And using the DRS automation field and other features, we're seeing a lot of success as far as load-balancing, and we can also forecast some of the trends that we have in our organizations with the product. Regarding the time to troubleshoot issues, on average, a NOC user or operations could spend at least 15 minutes just finding that VM or the issue. The solution is saving an average user, like myself as a consumer, about 40 percent. We have the issue, we have the problem. Before, we were spending an additional 40 percent just trying to find where the issue was. As far as cost savings go, we're seeing significant growth as an organization, and we're also seeing the cost savings in the reclamation. Right now, we're being challenged regarding our growth, and we have to find capacity, and using the product sufficed a lot to not (have to) purchase other new products.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has automated a lot of things. We have saved 30 to 35 percent in human resource time and cost, which is pretty substantial. We don't have a big workforce here, so we have to use all the automation we can get."
"Before implementing Turbonomic, we had difficulty reaching a consensus about VM placement and sizing. Everybody's opinion was wrong, including mine. The application developers, implementers, and infrastructure team could never decide the appropriate size of a virtual machine. I always made the machines small, and they always made them too big. We were both probably wrong."
"I only deal with the infrastructure side, so I really couldn't speak to more than load balancing as the most valuable feature for me. It provides specific actions that prevent resource starvation. It always keeps things in perfect balance."
"I like Turbonomic's built-in reporting. It provides a ton of information out of the box, so I don't have to build panels for the monthly summaries and other reports I need to present to management. We get better performance and bottleneck reporting from this than we do from our older EMC software."
"The proactive monitoring of all our open enrollment applications has improved our organization. We have used it to size applications that we are moving to the cloud. Therefore, when we move them out there, we have them appropriately sized. We use it for reporting to current application owners, showing them where they are wasting money. There are easy things to find for an application, e.g., they decommissioned the server, but they never took care of the storage. Without a tool like this, that storage would just sit there forever, with us getting billed for it."
"The solution has a good optimization feature."
"On-premises, one advantage I find particularly appealing is the ability to create policies for automatic CPU and memory scaling based on demand."
"With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past."
"The data backup replication has been the most useful feature. Previously, we copied the data hub to an external hard drive but now we are able to store the backup on one of the depository service."
"Very reliable and easy to use."
"The solution offers the normal benefits of a virtual machine versus a physical, actual machine. It doesn't take up space, for example."
"Veeam Backup Replication's most valuable features are the ease of use, good integration with others solutions, such as Oracle ERP, and by using the UI you can create and achieve operations you want to do."
"The fast backup and restore feature is the most valuable."
"The ability of instant VM recovery, which means starting the backup VM and getting it online while the recovery is still happening is the most valuable feature."
"The most valuable features of Veeam ONE are the backup reports, such as the status of the storage."
"The documentation is very good. It's also easy to install Veeam Backup and Replication."
"The capacity planning is one of the most valuable features. That is brilliant."
"vRealize looks at your data over time, at the performance of the machine over time. It can make assessments of the machine's health, based on that, for example, if there are sudden changes... we actually found a machine that had been compromised because it started doing a lot more work after hours and at weird hours."
"We have all the information that we need in one place and don't have to search for our monitoring tools everywhere."
"We can actually use it to expand on other aspects of it by adding additional packs is really good."
"It is efficient and easy to manage. We can find what we need from the software's interface."
"vROps' best feature is the easy integration with the environment."
"The most valuable feature is determining if more resources are needed, at the hypervisor level, based on the workload of the virtual machines that we have in our environment."
"The most valuable features are the Heat Maps, and the various graphs and reporting features it has."

Cons

"I would like Turbonomic to add more services, especially in the cloud area. I have already told them this. They can add Azure NetApp Files. They can add Azure Blob storage. They have already added Azure App service, but they can do more."
"Since the introduction of a HTML 5 based interface, our main - but minor - criticism of a less than intuitive operation managers' GUI would be the area of improvement."
"Recovering resources when they're not needed is not as optimized as it could be."
"Additional interfaces would be helpful."
"The one point is the reporting. We do have reports out of it, but they're not the level of graphical detail I would like."
"We're still evaluating the solution, so I don't know enough about what I don't know. They've done a lot over the years. I used Turbonomics six or seven years ago before IBM bought them. They've matured a lot since then."
"There is an opportunity for improvement with some of Turbonomic's permissions internally for role-based access control. We would like the ability to come up with some customized permissions or scope permissions a bit differently than the product provides."
"They have a long road map when we ask for certain things that will make the product better. It takes time, but that's understandable because there are other things that are higher on the priority list."
"It is not easy to navigate, especially with the numerous reports available."
"When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better."
"The stability for AIX machines could be better."
"The appliance doesn't have a domain. If there was a competitor with a domain, I'd likely use them."
"The VMotion feature is not reliable enough to ensure a successful migration operation."
"I would like to see the Veeam cloud solution and Microsoft Office 365 included all in one platform."
"Add an archive option to support legal obligations."
"Its licensing needs to be improved. Its licensing has become complex since last December. They have changed the way the product is licensed, and there is a lot of confusion. Sometimes, when a new version comes, it seems that it has not been tested enough because I usually find some bugs in it. It could also have more integration with other virtualization products, such as desktop virtualization products and open-source virtualization products."
"The tool is user-friendly, but you need to study to learn about the many features that the tool offers. It is not a tool that you can just start to work with when it comes to capacity planning. You need to study the documentation."
"Sometimes it's difficult to find some features like they were in previous versions."
"I would like more application dashboards to be available."
"It would break, and you would have to go fix it. Then it would break, and they would have some other guys that knew a bit more about it, and they fixed it."
"Lacks sufficient training for a relatively complex solution."
"Certificate Management should be simplified for non-technical staff members."
"One thing I mentioned when speaking with the engineers is that we'd like to get more granular reporting. We'd like to see more real-time reporting on the application-process level. Right now, we don't get that. For example, if I have a VM that's spiking up on memory or CPU, I can't really drill down to the application level and say, "Hey, I have IE that's spiking due to the user's streaming of video and that's affecting their entire session." vROps doesn't do that."
"The biggest room for improvement would be the customizability of the alerting function. The emails that come through are somewhat difficult to tailor along with the information contained within them and how they are laid out."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
"IBM Turbonomic is an investment that we believe will deliver positive returns."
"I have not seen Turbonomic's new pricing since IBM purchased it. When we were looking at it in my previous company before IBM's purchase, it was compatible with other tools."
"I know there have been some issues with the billing, when the numbers were first proposed, as to how much we would save. There was a huge miscommunication on our part. Turbonomic was led to believe that we could optimize our AWS footprint, because we didn't know we couldn't. So, we were promised savings of $750,000. Then, when we came to implement Turbonomic, the developers in AWS said, "Absolutely not. You're not putting that in our environment. We can't scale down anything because they coded it." Our AWS environment is a legacy environment. It has all these old applications, where all the developers who have made it are no longer with the company. Those applications generate a ton of money for us. So, if one breaks, we are really in trouble and they didn't want to have to deal with an environment that was changing and couldn't be supported. That number went from $750,000 to about $450,000. However, that wasn't Turbonomic's fault."
"Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
"We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
"I consider the pricing to be high."
"Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
"Veeam Backup Replication can be quite expensive for Office 365 because its license is per user and not for the space that you use. You need one license for each user. If the user only uses a few files on one hard drive, you need a license to back up these files. It was better to have a license model, such as in the Cohesity solution. Cohesity has a license for a space that you use. It's more useful in this case because the license for backup data is on-premises is for CPU. The license is based on how many CPUs you have but it does not depend on how many users use the CPU."
"Veeam is more reasonably priced than some competing products."
"The price is a bit high."
"Veeam ONE is cheaper when you compare it with one of its competitors in the ops space, VMware vRealize Operations. There's a separate department that deals with the licensing, but my company is using CSP licensing, which is the service provider licensing, so my company doesn't fall under the normal volume at the Veeam Universal licensing program. The cost is commit-based and depends on what your point commit is. The point commit works differently, and it's similar to your sales provider license. If you commit to using one thousand five hundred points, you get a certain price. If you commit to using the eight hundred points scheme, you get a certain price. As you grow the point scheme, you get a different price range, so it doesn't matter whether you're using Veeam One, Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup and Replication, Orchestrate, or whatever the product is."
"The product is not that expensive."
"We try to use perpetual licensing, and there are no additional costs. They have recently moved to universal licensing, which is more expensive, and I would like them to go back to host licensing."
"The pricing is good and affordable."
"The price of Veeam Backup Replication is reasonable. It is not inexpensive nor is it expensive, it is in the middle range compared to other solutions. There can be additional costs for addons."
"vRealize Operations has proved to be a cost effective solution for our big environment."
"In terms of the pricing for VMware vRealize Operations (vROps), I can't remember exactly how much it costs, but it was included in the VMware vSphere enterprise plus licensing package my company paid for."
"Bundle it in with your license rather than buying it as a separate product. It saves a lot of money that way."
"Every VMware product is a licensing challenge. It's always costly. It's based on processors. From a technical side, the product is very good. The challenging part is always the licensing. They should have some kind of alternate pricing models."
"We have seen good ROI results. It has made our lives easier."
"The solution requires an annual license which is very expensive."
"We would like to build custom dashboards in the standard license. Right now, this is available in the enterprise license, not the standard license."
"The billing is complicated because every country has a different option. Here in Chile, we don't pay for this kind of service with the Chilean pesos. We use another currency. In the future, I think vROps needs to work with governments for a native solution."
