Have faced limitations due to high costs but have maintained reliability over time
The primary issue is the pricing, which is very expensive for my company's budget. We cannot afford to pay such a large fee. We are not Microsoft or BMW; we are a small company. As a small company, I have no power to negotiate directly with VMware. Perhaps larger companies have more opportunity to contract directly with VMware, but I do not have that leverage. The only path I can follow is to change solutions. Net.spA is a company working in the field of waste management. We are not a technological company, so we do not have a large margin to justify purchasing and maintaining the VMware infrastructure at current costs.

Complete solution for automation, orchestration, and end-to-end lifecycle management
The most valuable feature is automation. With the automation, you can easily and quickly implement it by deploying gnashing on virtual environments. It doesn't take long to develop an automation blueprint. You need about half an hour, and then you can install or deploy it on several systems. That was our first great advantage in the project because we urgently needed to deploy across many different systems. So automation helps us to do our work quickly and easily. VMware vRealize has standardized systems for doing work after the deployment. First, you have to set up the language on the system itself. Then there are vRealize's orchestration features. You can implement code in your deployment script to do this configuration automatically. So the orchestrator is a beneficial component. With this, you can implement automatic language selection and automated integration. In other systems, you can implement a multi-blueprint or multi-system environment to deploy the entire database environment and applications on this database with one click. The lifecycle manager is also essential. In version 7.5, you must provide a dir example username and password to access the Citrix server and controller. What's more, you have to include this in your script or your code. But in version 8, you can provide the username and password or store them in the lifecycle manager. So then you can pick it up from there. And that's the only location where you have to change the password. You don't have to change it in every script. That's a massive improvement in version 8.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It allows us better visibility into our virtual infrastructure than we could get through vCenter or other tools by providing us a lot of metrics. vROps is good at spotting problems."
"It's a great tool for monitoring and tracking data of our entire environment."
"The performance for monitoring the VM is very good. Additionally, the solution is flexible."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to drill down and figure out exactly where CPU and memory contention could possibly be."
"We use vRealize Operations Manager primarily for capacity management within our environment."
"The predictive analysis of the infrastructure helps our customers to reduce downtime and improve capacity planning."
"It has helped improve the quality of service to users."
"It's taken a lot of the guesswork out and allowed us to be more proactive instead of reactive, which is nice."
"Overall, this is a good solution and we have not had any problems, but I can't say that it is perfect because of the issues with the documentation and knowledge base."
"The flexibility is the product's most valuable feature."
"I like the integration with other applications or vendors."
"I like the openness of the solution."
"This solution has made us aware that we are over-provisioning our virtual machines."
"The flexibility of the solution is the most valuable feature."
"The most valuable feature is the metering capability."
"It doesn't take long to develop an automation blueprint. You need about half an hour, and then you can install or deploy it on several systems. That was our first great advantage in the project because we urgently needed to deploy across many different systems."

Cons

"vROps has not really helped us avoid outages or shorten outage time."
"However, in the new features, I would like to include more online documentation that can help service generate early alerts."
"Continue on the endpoint side, so you can dig deeper into the Windows operating system, services, and events, because we're trying to use it to replace System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). It doesn't quite do everything, but it's getting there."
"It was not intuitive and user-friendly in the versions leading up to 6.5."
"There should be a better database control, so that we are able to manage it a bit better."
"Previous versions were not as strong."
"There are some distribution issues, and there is not enough information on the portal."
"There was a collection bug and some alert bugs (didn’t show all the alerts and popped up fake alarms)."
"There are some kinks to resolve with the Web GUI user interface, as it freezes at times."
"It's not always easy to find the information you need. You must have a lot of technical experience to find the right location for what you're implementing within the program."
"At the moment, in the POC, we have a very huge issue because you definitely have to implement a vSphere cluster."
"The pricing model is complicated and would be more predictable if it were simplified."
"Better integration with other VMware toolsets would be beneficial."
"It's not always easy to find the information you need."
"The solution's private cloud is much too expensive."
"The problem with VMware is the price."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Get the right licensing and increase your licensing as you upgrade and grow. If you get the wrong licensing, it will be expensive, especially if you plan improperly."
"vRealize Operations has proved to be a cost effective solution for our big environment."
"I would like to see a free offering. Cost is always a factor in any sort of line. Obviously, the value added is there and it's worth it."
"If the VMs were trimmed, then we wouldn't have to buy as much software/hardware, and this means less licenses. While most of it is VMware licenses, which are relatively cheap, there are SQL licenses for Microsoft, and this is where we could start saving a lot of money."
"The solution is slightly expensive."
"Every VMware product is a licensing challenge. It's always costly. It's based on processors. From a technical side, the product is very good. The challenging part is always the licensing. They should have some kind of alternate pricing models."
"If one is low price and ten is high price, I rate the product price a ten."
"We have licenses on a three year basis. Licensing costs are much higher, but given the stability of the solution, it is a reasonable price."
"The pricing model is complicated."
"It's expensive, which is one of the problems with this solution."
"The product is a cost-effective solution."
