A free tool for customizing pages and creating lists and libraries
Pros and Cons
  • "What I found most valuable in SharePoint Designer is that through it, you can perform a lot of SharePoint functionalities, such as creating SharePoint lists and libraries, as well as customizing pages."
  • "The pain point of SharePoint Designer is sometimes it gives you issues that can be resolved mostly by clearing the cache, but Microsoft should still work on it and make the product more stable. Another issue related to SharePoint Designer is that with the newer SharePoint versions, Microsoft hasn't released a newer version of SharePoint Designer. Instead, Microsoft is recommending that you use the same old SharePoint Designer 2013. If Microsoft updates SharePoint Designer, the product will be more beneficial."

What is our primary use case?

Our use case for SharePoint Designer is customizing SharePoint.

What is most valuable?

What I found most valuable in SharePoint Designer is that through it, you can perform a lot of SharePoint functionalities, such as creating SharePoint lists and libraries, as well as customizing pages.

What needs improvement?

The pain point of SharePoint Designer is sometimes it gives you issues that can be resolved mostly by clearing the cache, but Microsoft should still work on it and make the product more stable.

Another issue related to SharePoint Designer is that with the newer SharePoint versions, Microsoft hasn't released a newer version of SharePoint Designer. Instead, Microsoft is recommending that you use the same old SharePoint Designer 2013. If Microsoft updates SharePoint Designer, the product will be more beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using SharePoint Designer for ten or twelve years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SharePoint Designer is a stable product, and though sometimes it gives you issues, that can be resolved by clearing the cache.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

SharePoint Designer has very good scalability.

How are customer service and support?

We've never contacted technical support for SharePoint Designer. We just searched some online help forums where we get solutions to any product issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We haven't used a different solution for SharePoint. We've only been using SharePoint Designer.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for SharePoint Designer requires no effort because it's a client application.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented SharePoint Designer in-house. In the beginning, the vendor was involved, but after that, we did it in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

SharePoint Designer is a free product. It's SharePoint that needs a license, not SharePoint Designer.

What other advice do I have?

Five people use SharePoint Designer within my company. Currently, there's no plan to increase the usage of the product.

One to two people take care of the deployment and maintenance of SharePoint Designer. Managers can use the product, but the technical staff uses it more.

Based on experience, I would recommend SharePoint Designer to other users because it's a product that's very easy to use, easy to set up, and provides a lot of functionalities in terms of customizing SharePoint.

My rating for SharePoint Designer is eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It's free, but it could be more user-friendly and have more features
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the most valuable features is that it's free. If you have SharePoint and you want to do some branding, then the only tool available is SharePoint Designer. Microsoft gives the portal, the content management system, and, on top of that, it gives you Designer. So we don't have a choice, but Designer is good."
  • "SharePoint Designer could be improved by being more user-friendly. I think that they have a new release, but the focus is on Power Automate, not Designer. Designer's interface is somewhat classical, but it should be more user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

One of our use cases of SharePoint is designing and branding our content management system. When somebody buys an intranet portal, like a content management system, for employees or a document management system for their company, they can buy SharePoint and use it to change the branding. Microsoft gives you default features—out-of-the-box—so if you want any changes regarding your identity, HTML, CSS, colors, or brand guidelines, then SharePoint Designer can help you to complete that task. SharePoint Designer can also be used to clear workflows. This is a tool which helps us brand the SharePoint portal and our flow sites.

In the beginning, SharePoint was deployed on-premises, but now it is deployed on the cloud, so we are always using the latest version.

What is most valuable?

One of the most valuable features is that it's free. If you have SharePoint and you want to do some branding, then the only tool available is SharePoint Designer. Microsoft gives the portal, the content management system, and, on top of that, it gives you Designer. So we don't have a choice, but Designer is good.

What needs improvement?

SharePoint Designer could be improved by being more user-friendly. I think that they have a new release, but the focus is on Power Automate, not Designer. Designer's interface is somewhat classical, but it should be more user-friendly.

Designer should contain more features. Right now, we are doing the development of web parts on Visual Studio and doing the branding on Designer. If it were possible to merge them both into one tool, it would be easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SharePoint Designer for 13 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There is no maintenance team necessary. Users can maintain it by themselves because Designer is a tool which can be deployed on each PC to work on.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In our organization, we have around eight to ten people who are developing on SharePoint Designer. We don't currently have plans to increase usage, but it depends. We are a project delivering company, and I am a project manager, so our SharePoint usage is on a project-based development. If we have a client we need to use SharePoint for, we may increase the usage, but otherwise we won't.

How are customer service and support?

In 13 years, we have raised tickets two or three times. They don't call us, but when we raise tickets, then the issues can be resolved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Visual Studio from Microsoft to develop the programs for SharePoint. Designer is only for branding and workflows, but you have to use Visual Studio to actually develop the portal components and web parts. Visual Studio should be used with SharePoint.

How was the initial setup?

The installation of Designer is very simple, and it doesn't take more than 30 minutes. You can download and install it yourself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is no licensing cost for Designer—it's free.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SharePoint Designer a six out of ten. There were some bugs, but when you are working on SharePoint, you have to recommend SharePoint Designer, for sure.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

We have seen ROI with the use of the tool.

Data and site management solution that offers a useful drag and drop feature and is easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The drag and drop feature is the most useful feature when using this solution."
  • "The downside is the different versions of SharePoint which means we need to have different designers as not all versions are compatible."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for web applications when we need to make changes to the pages and front end. We also use it to make changes to the html, design and the user experience. 40 people use this solution in our business.

What is most valuable?

The drag and drop feature is the most useful feature when using this solution. In addition, it is a free solution that does not require a license.

What needs improvement?

The downside is the different versions of SharePoint which means we need to have different designers as not all versions are compatible.

In the future, we would like to have support for SharePoint online and the latest standards of UX.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution since 2006.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the initial setup an eight out of ten.

A solution with great workflow and good stability but it needs more web-based publishing
Pros and Cons
  • "The workflow is the solution's most valuable feature."
  • "The solution requires more web-based publishing. It would benefit from adding in more collaboration features as well."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as our internet and extranet platform and for our software.

What is most valuable?

The workflow is the solution's most valuable feature.

What needs improvement?

We work mostly with documentation and we'd like to have  it be more of a web-based. Right now, our product, our system is only set up for PDF and we're looking for a better web-based solution for our documentation.

The solution requires more web-based publishing. It would benefit from adding in more collaboration features as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for at least seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is a little bit complex. We do have a lot of issues with scalability. It's not everything we hoped for.

How are customer service and technical support?

We go through our own IT department, so we don't deal with technical support directly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm not aware of our organization using a different solution. We've always used SharePoint Designer.

How was the initial setup?

For our organization, it was quite complex. We have different departments in our group that require different access, which added a layer of complexity for us. The deployment took about a year.

What other advice do I have?

We use the on-premises deployment model.

A lot of planning is necessary before deciding on a final solution or a final architecture. Planning is very important prior to implementation.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Helps with website creation, offers helpful master page configuration and is reasonably priced
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is not too complex."
  • "It needs to align with PowerApps and Power Automate."

What is our primary use case?

When we want to do the configuration changes or customization on the SharePoint side, we do so using SharePoint Designer.

It's a very good tool when it comes to the modification of SharePoint back pages. We use a lot of the standard tools.

How has it helped my organization?

It has helped us create some strong, beautiful websites for our organization.

What is most valuable?

The master page configuration is useful.

The solution is reasonably priced.

It is scalable.

The solution has been stable.

The initial setup is not too complex.

What needs improvement?

The integration with SharePoint online is missing certain features.

It needs to align with PowerApps and Power Automate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since 2016. I've used it for about seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. The solution can extend well.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is a bit tricky to talk about. We generally get support for Microsoft products in general, which is helpful. However, we've never needed help with this product.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward to set up. It's not complex at all.

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is reasonable overall. It's not too expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We have been using the 2016 version.

I'd advise others to use SharePoint Designer if they value SharePoint.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten. It has been very useful as a tool.

Enables us to build workflow processes from end-to-end
Pros and Cons
  • "The technical support from Microsoft is very good."
  • "The new SharePoint Designer is very limited."

What is our primary use case?

We were reviewing this tool for one of our clients — we work with both medium and large enterprises. Currently, they are using Documentum but they are interested in migrating to SharePoint, so they asked us to compare the two. I am part of an IT company where we do a lot of solutions and service-based IT. We do things for many customers from the IT side.

SharePoint Designer is for the developer or the administrator, it's not for the end product (the business user).

We use SharePoint to improve sequencing and workflow design in general, and it can be used to build a workflow process from end-to-end.

We also use the classic version of SharePoint to do work on the master page, pinning, and other things. We can use SharePoint Designer for that. We also copy our data from our SharePoint site by using SharePoint Designer to cut and paste.

What is most valuable?

SharePoint Designer is a great tool. The new workflow platform, Power Automate, which can be integrated with SharePoint Designer, is going to be great because currently, SharePoint Designer is only compatible with workflows.

What needs improvement?

Because things are moving toward the cloud, they should design a pin in SharePoint Designer that would be great because we do some coding for that.

SharePoint Designer should be integrated with SharePoint, for example, SharePoint Online can be integrated with SharePoint Designer to perform activities such as backup and restoration, that would provide a great advantage for developers and administrators. Naturally, this integration would also help Microsoft grow its SharePoint market.

We use Power Automate in the cloud, it would be great if we could do that with SharePoint Designer and publish it to the cloud. It would be nice if we could work offline, too. It is not always necessary to be online. The modern platform, from Microsoft Modern UI, is easily designed with integrated teams within SharePoint Designer, which will be a great advantage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SharePoint since June 2007. We were using SharePoint Designer 2013, but we have recently upgraded to modern SharePoint; however, because the development platform was changed, the new SharePoint Designer is very limited, so we don't use SharePoint Designer very often.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, it's quite stable, but sometimes it requires maintenance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is not a problem because this is a desktop application and it works just fine. As long as your SharePoint site is scalable, the application will work just fine.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support from Microsoft is very good. We have never had any issues with them.

How was the initial setup?

From a user's perspective, it was simple. Microsoft is user-friendly and is always simple to use.

The setup time is very quick. I don't remember exactly, but I would say it took maybe even less than five minutes.

What about the implementation team?

We do everything. Sometimes it requires maintenance and when it does, we do it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

SharePoint is included in your Office 365 package, you don't have to buy anything extra. There is no extra license required. Typically, many customers already have the Office 365 license in place so it's just a matter of leveraging Sharepoint Online.

What other advice do I have?

SharePoint Designer is just a tool. As there are a lot of key factors, I would recommend using SharePoint Designer online for internal collaboration platforms. SharePoint is not only a document management system, but it also handles content management systems, workflow automation, process automation, and more.

SharePoint Online is a product that is included in the Microsoft Office 365 package, it is not part of Microsoft Azure. Office 365 and Microsoft 365 is a separate product altogether. People do use SharePoint Designer within the SharePoint 2016 and 2019 on-premise versions, but I see a lot of customers moving to the cloud, so they use SharePoint Online.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

A stable solution that's easy to set up and has a good user interface
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable aspects of the solution are the user-friendly interface and easy workflow."
  • "Further development for SharePoint online would be ideal. However, I'm not sure if it's true that Microsoft will no longer develop SharePoint Designer in the future or not."

What is our primary use case?

I use it mainly for workflows or for minor changes in SharePoint master pages.

How has it helped my organization?

I have setup many simple and complex workflows, very useful for daily automation (invoices, travel, leave approval) . It is also useful to make small branding customizations.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable aspects of the solution are the user-friendly interface and easy creation of workflow.

What needs improvement?

Unfortunately Microsoft announced a few years ago that the last update for SharePoint Designer was released on August 2, 2016 and that Microsoft Flow will be the workflow designer and engine going forward.

I would add Nintex or all of the Nintex workflow to the solution if I could. I would add them to SharePoint Designer so that I would need to use only one workflow designer. Right now, I'm using SharePoint Designer and Nintex, and it would be better to centralize it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

SharePoint Designer is a very small tool, and very clever. You install it on your computer to access SharePoint's entire platform. In that sense, it's not a technology that's scalable or that needs to be scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never had to contact technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy. Deployment takes five minutes; it's basically just installing the software.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed the solution myself.

What other advice do I have?

We use the on-premises deployment solution.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
