Beneficial document management, effective support, and integrates well
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of SharePoint Designer is document management."
  • "SharePoint Designer could improve most in analytics and reporting."

What is our primary use case?

We use SharePoint Designer for our intranet knowledge management portal and training portal.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of SharePoint Designer is document management.

What needs improvement?

SharePoint Designer could improve most in analytics and reporting.

In a future release, SharePoint Designer can improve by implementing a headless solution, where we can create pages without headers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SharePoint Designer for approximately 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SharePoint Designer is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of SharePoint Designer is good.

How are customer service and support?

The support from SharePoint Designer is very good. When we have an issue they responded quickly and look into the situation.

I rate the support from SharePoint Designer a five out of five.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of SharePoint Designer is simple. The full implementation of the solution took years because we slowly made changes over time.

I rate the initial setup of SharePoint Designer a four out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are using an enterprise SharePoint Designer license.

What other advice do I have?

SharePoint Designer is the best solution we have. We don't see any alternative as of now. For intranet and knowledge management purposes this is the best solution. It has great integration with Office products.

I rate SharePoint Designer a ten out of ten.

We can use it as a secondary customization platform but it should be more flexible and upgrading should be simpler
Pros and Cons
  • "What I like most about this solution, is that we can use it as a secondary customization platform."
  • "There is zero technical support. I have to use Google to fix the issues myself."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for SharePoint Designer is for implementation for clients.

What is most valuable?

What I like most about this solution, is that we can use it as a secondary customization platform. We do customization and make a web SharePoint live for our clients.

What needs improvement?

From what I read online, it depends on what you use the program for. I think the customization and migration need to improve. Upgrading should be simpler without too many things you need to change or repair.

SharePoint Designer should be more practical and become an extension of Visual Studio. Because Visual Studio is a universal development platform. So I don't want to have to switch my user ID every time. So it should be more flexible and more of a mobile app version and integration with other solutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using SharePoint Designer for more than six years now on premise.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The program is perfectly stable. I really like Microsoft products because they are very advanced. I like SharePoint because it's big and the pricing is fair.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of SharePoint is good and the program is fast.

How are customer service and technical support?

There is zero technical support. I have to use Google to fix the issues myself.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used a smaller content management platform which I customized. Visual Studio and SharePoint Designer work well together and could be extensions to each other.

How was the initial setup?

I struggle with the installation. We are not a small company and there are three equal sides. You need to get them right, otherwise, SharePoint won't install properly. A single installation takes a couple of hours. You need time to do separate functionality.

The program wasn't easy to deploy either, because when I integrate solutions, I have to do so many things before I can deploy SharePoint. So the process is a little tedious due to the security features of the program, but once you get it, it becomes easier. But its always a challenge for someone who is unfamiliar with this program.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I've never paid for SharePoint Designer. What I paid for is the SharePoint license, the cava, and then the client accesses the line fee.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I rate this a five because it could be more flexible.

A stable version that helps to create workflows
Pros and Cons
  • "I would rate the solution's stability a nine out of ten."
  • "SharePoint Designer doesn't support the features that are available in the latest version of SharePoint Online."

What is our primary use case?

The tool helps with document management. We use the solution to create workflows.

What needs improvement?

SharePoint Designer doesn't support the features that are available in the latest version of SharePoint Online.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for around ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the solution's stability a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Microsoft's support is good. We haven't used support since we resolve the issues by ourselves.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's setup is easy and I would rate it a nine out of ten. The solution's deployment takes only a few minutes to complete. You need to log in with your credentials to connect with any of the SharePoint environments. It took only minimal resources to deploy the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The tool is free of cost.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate the solution an eight out of ten. You can go ahead if you look to use 2010 or 2013 on-premises versions of the solution. However, it doesn't support the latest versions.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Document management and search are the most valuable features of this solution
Pros and Cons
  • "I find the document management and search of SharePoint the most valuable features."
  • "I would like to see SharePoint improve the integration with different systems. I also would like to see more customization."

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case for this solution is to develop custom SharePoint sites. SharePoint is about collaboration to help improve efficiency, collaboration within teams, document management, and search. We have thousands of users in our client organization. We are a Microsoft gold partner.

How has it helped my organization?

SharePoint Designer has made information available centrally 24/7. It brings offline records online. It has made searching easy, without it document search was difficult. Communication between departments has become more effective.

What is most valuable?

I find the document management and search of SharePoint the most valuable features.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see SharePoint improve the integration with different systems. I also would like to see more customization.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using SharePoint Designer for 16 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SharePoint is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability has certain limitations depending on the number of users and number of records.

How are customer service and support?

The availability and quality of technical support both need improvement.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier, we used Custom.NET applications however, SharePoint is much better.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and gets simpler with every new version. The set-up takes less than a day, but the project for full implementation takes anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks.

What about the implementation team?

We used our own consultants to set up SharePoint. You need anywhere from 2 to 5 people and even upwards of 10 depending on the size of the portal to deploy and maintain SharePoint Designer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Most of the SharePoint implementations are for the cloud which is priced per user per month. There are different plans at different costs that you can choose from.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We reviewed Custom.NET and other PHP based solutions prior to selecting SharePoint.

What other advice do I have?

If you are implementing SharePoint Designer in your organization, I would recommend that you use the best practices given by Microsoft, specifically in implementation.

I would rate SharePoint an 8 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Great features but I would like to be able to create more complicated designs
Pros and Cons
  • "The new version doesn't have the option to view data, but it has other, better features though."
  • "I would like to be able to use SharePoint Designer without having to buy other third party programs."

What is most valuable?

The previous version of the solution was good as we had different views of both the design and the code. The new version doesn't have the option to view data but it has other, better features though.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see some improvements when assigning a task. For instance, when you create a task or a subtask, there should be a better workflow. At this stage, we can't CC any names in the sent box. We can only use a "to" address. So when I want to send an email, I have to write a custom code through .NET and then send the mail. It takes up a lot of my time. Then I also found that there was a requirement from one of my customers that they want this option in the taskbar too. For instance, when the email gets sent, they want a CC option as well.

What other advice do I have?

I will rate this program a five out of ten. The reason for this is that I would like to be able to use SharePoint Designer without having to buy other third party programs. At this stage, I still have to use other designing webpages because SharePoint Designer doesn't offer all the features I need. You can create beautiful pages, add the list and add a document library, but the solution doesn't offer any complicated designing features. One can only do a few simple designs. Everything has to be coded through either Visual Studio or some other solution. So I hope to see an improvement in the new version of this program. Perhaps they can add different templates where one can add banners, tabs, and lists. And even drag and drop features where one can add permissions. That would be great.
