We use Teradata in our data warehouse and we extract data. We have a data department that uses many tools for data extractions.
Big data administrator at a comms service provider with 1,001-5,000 employees
Fast response times, easy to use, and scalable
Pros and Cons
- "Teradata has good performance, the response times are very fast. Overall the solution is easy to use. When we do the transformation, we have all of our staging and aggregation data available."
- "The solution is stable. However, there are times when we are using large amounts of data and we can see some latency issues."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Teradata has good performance, the response times are very fast. Overall the solution is easy to use. When we do the transformation, we have all of our staging and aggregation data available.
What needs improvement?
Teradata could improve by providing better training. For example, Oracle provides good overall training. It is not easy to find information on the internet.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Teradata for approximately eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. However, there are times when we are using large amounts of data and we can see some latency issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Teradata is scalable. We have two large servers and if we need to add new servers it can be done. Additionally, adding hard drive space or more performance is not a problem.
We have approximately 15 users using this solution in my organization.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is good but they could improve because sometimes they can take two weeks to resolve issues.
How was the initial setup?
The implementation took approximately one month.
What about the implementation team?
We did the implementation of Teradata using their support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of the solution could be reduced, it is expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution to others.
I rate Teradata a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Services Manager at a tech services company with 201-500 employees
User-friendly and has good parallel processing
Pros and Cons
- "Intelliflex is very scalable. In fact, scalability has improved 100 times by Intelliflex, in my personal opinion."
- "The reporting side wasn't very good in the past, but with the latest versions, it's getting better. Still, the friendliness of the PDC reporting and functionality needs to be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution to store data.
What is most valuable?
The solution is the Rolls-Royce of data warehousing. Because of the way it's been developed, and the parallel processing, there's no other system in the world that can touch it. I don't think it's there yet, but if you're using Tableau, it's much more user-friendly when you want to start reporting. On Teradata, I think there are some improvements that need to be done because you still have to be an expert to understand PDCR.
What needs improvement?
The reporting side wasn't very good in the past, but with the latest versions, it's getting better. Still, the friendliness of the PDC reporting and functionality needs to be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have 11 years of experience with Teradata.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is incredible.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
IntelliFlex is very scalable. In fact, scalability has improved 100 times by IntelliFlex, in my personal opinion. Many large scale companies in South Africa are using it.
How are customer service and technical support?
Everything is in a controlled environment and you've got tools where you can log calls, and prioritize the issues. Everything is clearly defined from the start so there's minimal downtime. The Teradata system is so redundant that if something goes wrong, the client won't even pick up on it; the part can be replaced and the system won't even be offline because almost everything is swap-able.
There is also Teradata University, and a lot of tutorials you can do for training. It's all very professional.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I was in the SAP environment for many years and moved away from that to focus on Teradata.
How was the initial setup?
Teradata is very professional when it comes to the way they handle installations. They work according to a trans-control process, so every installation that has been done or installed by Teradata is pre-approved by technical experts.
Once the product is pre-approved, we will install it according to a trans-control process, and anything that we do regardless of the system is being recorded by the lease management. Going forward, everybody knows what exactly is happening on the system, including what the latest releases of any firmware on the system are. It's a controlled environment.
What about the implementation team?
We used a consultant for implementation.
What other advice do I have?
We use the on-premises version of the solution.
I would recommend Teradata IntelliFlex. There's not a better solution on the market. It's one of the best data warehouses you can find.
I would rate the solution ten out of ten.

Teradata Team Leader at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees
With the current machine we are able to eliminate the use of OLAP cubes and allow customer queries to run directly on the Teradata machine.
Pros and Cons
- "The two types of partitioning have been very significant for us - row and columnar partitioning."
- "Data synchronization to the DR site."
What is most valuable?
The two types of partitioning have been very significant for us - row and columnar partitioning.
How has it helped my organization?
With the current machine we are able to eliminate the use of OLAP cubes and allow customer queries to run directly on the Teradata machine.
We have now started running more profit generating activities on the Teradata machine, as opposed to just running reports, as in the past.
What needs improvement?
Data synchronization to the DR site.
My company’s management has to decide whether to invest in this area. This is more an internal issue at the company and definitely not a problem with the Teradata product. If we end up migrating to another platform, this will be the reason.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using the solution for seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Teradata is the most stable platform that I’ve worked with in my 20-year career.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Teradata’s scalability is excellent.
How are customer service and technical support?
Teradata’s technical support is excellent. The support people are highly professional, and nice, to boot.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
My previous background was with Oracle. I changed jobs and was asked to handle the Teradata team. It was a chance to learn something new and interesting.
How was the initial setup?
Initial setup is quite straightforward, but previous experience with other databases tends to make it more difficult, because it takes a while until you get used to thinking in Teradata terms, rather than Oracle/SQL Server/PostgreSQL terms.
It’s a different animal. However, once you start thinking like a Teradata DBA, things are much easier.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing can seem high, but when all factors are taken into account, the total costs are comparable to other databases as:
- Few DBA’s are required
- Unplanned downtime is very rare.
By avoiding the Enterprise solutions, you can actually end up with a cheaper, yet much more powerful machine. We moved from an Enterprise platform, to non-Enterprise and ended up with a machine that was 20X more powerful. We got an amazing performance boost.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Every few years we examine the option of migrating to other platforms such as HPE Vertica, Oracle Exadata, or SQream.
In the past, it turned out that other solutions, in order to provide the full range of abilities that the Teradata platform provides plus the migration costs, would end up costing more than Teradata does.
What other advice do I have?
Make sure that you have a good Teradata DBA to help implement the solution. A great Oracle DBA is not sufficient, because it takes a while to internalize that they are two different things.
Make sure that you have a good backup/recovery/DR plan, and that it is covered by the infrastructure you are purchasing. Otherwise, you might find yourself with a system that performs great, but has no good DR solution.

Operations Lead at a retailer with 201-500 employees
Good availability, good performance, and offers good value
Pros and Cons
- "The solution scales well on the cloud."
- "Teradata is a bit late for the cloud."
What is our primary use case?
We used the solution for our data warehouse.
What is most valuable?
The availability is very good.
We have found performance to be one of the most valuable aspects.
The solution scales well on the cloud.
What needs improvement?
Teradata is a bit late for the cloud. They maybe need to have some room for cloud improvements.
Scalability is limited on-premises.
The solution could use more AI support.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for a while. The last time I used it was two months ago.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The performance is great. It's stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.
Teradata is a 100% stable environment.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
In on-premise systems, it was a bit tricky to scale. However, in the cloud, it's very easy.
People are not directly connecting to Teradata. However, they are using reports that are fed from Teradata. In that sense, the entire company is using Teradata. It's more than 1,000 people.
How are customer service and support?
I'm not directly connected with technical support from Teradata. I connect the local support here, and they are connected to Teradata, and on the weekends or after working hours, we get support and solutions. So we were happy with Teradata's and local company's support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
This product was already set up when I joined the organization. As far as I know, they were trying to replace SAP BW. There was an SAP BW system, and they were trying to replace it with Teradata.
How was the initial setup?
It was easy for me to set up since I didn't handle the setup. Our local support company managed everything and prepared the environment, and handed it over to us. It was very easy in that sense.
What about the implementation team?
We had a local support organization assist us in the setup.
What was our ROI?
We have seen an ROI. It's worth the money.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Teradata is not a very cheap solution, yet it is a good solution. You get a good return on what you have paid for.
What other advice do I have?
I'm an end-user.
If new users are experienced database users, they will know the administration side is different than the other databases. However, it's almost the same for an end user, a developer, or somebody doing reports on Teradata on another database. It has some differences, yet the logic is the same.
I'd recommend the solution to others. I love Teradata.
I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.
I was happy to use it. I was glad to have Teradata, since, with Teradata, we can meet the requests of the customers, and it is highly available.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Manager Performance Systems at Telstra
Massive parallel processing ability to do large amounts of concurrent querying
Pros and Cons
- "It has massive parallel processing ability to do large amounts of concurrent querying."
- "It has given our business the ability to gain insights into the data and create data labs for analysis and PoCs."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for enterprise data warehouse (EDW) with on-premise hardware. The company uses EDW for most MIS functions.
How has it helped my organization?
It has massive parallel processing ability to do large amounts of concurrent querying. It has given our business the ability to gain insights into the data and create data labs for analysis and PoCs.
What is most valuable?
Speed of complex queries and the ability to schedule give business users time to analyse data rather than waiting for queries to run.
What needs improvement?
We are using an older version at the moment. We are looking for a more flexible cost model for the next version that we use, whether it be cloud or on-premise.
For how long have I used the solution?
More than five years.

Easy to set up and reliable with good performance capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "I've never had any issues with scalability."
- "Apart from Control-M, it would be nice if it could integrate with other tools."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for the EDW.
What is most valuable?
The performance is the key item we appreciate. We're able to easily trigger jobs and we have access to integrations for running jobs. It's easy to use for the most part, which is why I really like it.
It's stable and reliable.
I've never had any issues with scalability.
The initial setup is pretty simple to set up.
What needs improvement?
Apart from Control-M, it would be nice if it could integrate with other tools. Specifically, with respect to the integrations with the automation tools, if that can be increased, and if the tester could be able to test more automation scripts in a better way it would help. The efficiency could always be increased.
Occasionally, at the outset of the implementation process, we struggled a little bit.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've only used the solution for a few months. It hasn't been a year yet. It hasn't been that long.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability has been good so far. It's reliable and the performance is good. there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution seems to be scalable. I've never run into any issues with sizing. It's good.
I cannot recall the exact number of users that are on this solution currently.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is quite good. We used them once or twice and, as I recall, their response was always very quick. We are quite satisfied with the level of service they offer.
How was the initial setup?
For the most part, the initial setup is good. We found it pretty straightforward. That said, sometimes, in the beginning, we struggle.
For us, the deployment took around two hours. It didn't take too long.
We had about ten members on the technical team that handled deployment and maintenance.
What about the implementation team?
We are able to handle the initial setup ourselves. As long there are not some prerequisites or system issues, then it's possible for us to handle everything.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't have any direct details about the licensing or pricing of the solution.
What other advice do I have?
I'm not sure of which version of the solution we're using. It might be a previous version.
I'd recommend the solution to other users and organizations.
I would rate the solution nine out of ten. We are quite pleased with its general capabilities.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Good performance and it is easy to use data from multiple sources
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is the ease of uploading data from multiple sources."
- "It is hard for some of our users to set up rules for cleansing and transforming data, so this is something that could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution as a simple repository for all of the data that comes from multiple sources related to our organization. It has financial data, transactional data, customer complaint data, as well as customer feedback data. All of these are collected from different systems and they are consolidated for viewing within our management dashboards or for use in other analytics.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the ease of uploading data from multiple sources.
It performs well both in terms of speed and reliability.
What needs improvement?
It is hard for some of our users to set up rules for cleansing and transforming data, so this is something that could be improved. This is necessary because the data that comes from different sources has different formatting, and sometimes there is duplication. This means that some degree of transformation is required.
I would like to see more options for visualization so that the data can be better presented to management.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Aster Data Map Reduce for about two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
For all of our users, this solution has been stable. It performs well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
In terms of scale, our data is not very big but we have have not encountered any problems with respect to scalability. We have between 30 and 40 users.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have never been in touch with technical support.
How was the initial setup?
While the initial setup can be complex, we are fine with it. It took us perhaps two or three days to deploy.
What about the implementation team?
My team handled the deployment but I was not personally involved with it.
One or two people are required for maintenance, depending on their availability.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing this product we looked at both Apache and a solution from IBM. Ultimately, our team felt that this was more suitable for us.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to anybody who is considering this solution would be to opt for the cloud version, rather than deploy on-premises. It is a better option.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
