User-friendly, easy to use, and open-source

We've found the solution to be quite stable so far.
The solution is free to use.
There is a very good open-source community surrounding the solution that can help you troubleshoot if you run into any issues.
What needs improvement?
You need a Linux operating system to be the host of the web servers. We don't use a GUI. It's not like Windows. It's not for daily users to write documents or browsing sheets or browsing the internet.
The product could be easier to manage.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for five or six years at this point.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is very good. It doesn't crash or freeze. There are no bugs or glitches. It's reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution can scale if you need it to.
How are customer service and technical support?
We don't really deal with technical support per see. It's a free-to-use open-source solution. The way it works is it has a community and you can submit to Ubuntu and you can get help from some of the people that lead this community. It's pretty good. You can find what you need to solve pretty much any problem you might have.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I've also used CentOS, and I would recommend Unbuntu over it.
How was the initial setup?
I did not install the solution myself, however, if you decide to use the cloud you can choose it as a wizard. It's my understanding that it is pretty straightforward.

Owner at Networks srl
Fast, free, and supports containers and all kinds of libraries
Pros and Cons
- "It is fast and easy to install. It also supports containers and all kinds of libraries. I can do almost everything with it."
- "It can be improved in terms of user-friendliness for inexperienced users. It also has a lot of scope for improvement in terms of deployment. It is kind of hard for inexperienced users, and the learning curve is very steep. There is not really good documentation for new professionals. Even we are using network servers to install it."
What is our primary use case?
I am using it for quite a lot of things. I teach at a university where we use it for radiation protection computations. On the networking side, I use it for both workstations and firewalls. I always use its latest version.
What is most valuable?
It is fast and easy to install. It also supports containers and all kinds of libraries. I can do almost everything with it.
What needs improvement?
It can be improved in terms of user-friendliness for inexperienced users. It also has a lot of scope for improvement in terms of deployment. It is kind of hard for inexperienced users, and the learning curve is very steep. There is not really good documentation for new professionals. Even we are using network servers to install it.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for 12 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
If it is administered properly, it is stable. If there are administration issues, they are kind of hard to resolve for inexperienced users.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable in terms of server cluster infrastructure, but the main issue with scalability is the hardware.
We have five to ten users in the enterprise. We also use it for every student. In terms of our plans to increase its usage, I don't know what the future brings because I see that Microsoft has also started to use Linux infrastructure.
How are customer service and technical support?
I am not using the Enterprise support for Ubuntu. I am kind of used to it, and I know how to compile kernels and modules. It is no issue at all.
How was the initial setup?
I started with BSD. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to install Ubuntu Linux.
What about the implementation team?
I installed it myself.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't need to pay for the license.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution based on the application. For a firewall, I would go for a dedicated device. For a desktop, it is okay to use.
I would rate Ubuntu Linux a ten out of ten.

Operations Manager at a retailer with 201-500 employees
Good user interface and a straightforward setup but have not used it long enough to really gauge its usefulness
Pros and Cons
- "The solution has a very good graphical user interface."
- "After only a week of using the solution, we haven't really found any limitations or missing features."
What is most valuable?
We're still in the learning phase. However, from what I have seen in the short time I've used it, it's been rather user-friendly.
The installation is pretty straightforward.
The solution has a very good graphical user interface.
What needs improvement?
After only a week of using the solution, we haven't really found any limitations or missing features. The experience has been pretty good so far.
For how long have I used the solution?
We're very new to the solution. We're still learning about the product. It's only been a week or so, so far.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability, so far, has been good. We haven't had any issues with bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze on us. It's been very reliable so far.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have about 20 users on the solution currently. However, I've mostly restricted the usage to just myself as I explore the solution. It's still early days. We haven't done any scaling.
While the solution is still new to us, we'll continue to use it so long as the solution itself proves to be useful to the company.
How are customer service and technical support?
We haven't yet dealt with technical support in any way. Therefore, I can't speak to their level of knowledge or responsiveness.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did previously use a different solution, however this was recommended to us by colleagues and we're trying it out.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not complex. It's pretty straightforward. We didn't have any issues implementing the product.
The deployment was pretty fast as well. We had it set up within an hour.
What about the implementation team?
I handled the implementation myself. I didn't need the assistance of an integrator or consultant.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution isn't really expensive at this time. So far the version we are using goes, it is being used on the virtual machine. That was a free download.
What other advice do I have?
We've just installed Ubuntu very recently. I'm just trying to see how it is right now. We have it installed on Windows 10 Pro. While we use the on-premises version, we're very interested in exploring the cloud.
I'm not sure just yet if I would recommend the product to others simply due to the fact that I've basically just started using it. I need at least a month of working on it in order to be able to tell if it works how we hope it will and if I would recommend it to others.
Right now, I would recommend the solution at a six out of ten. I need more time to really analyze it properly.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

We have 30 to 40 people on the solution currently.
How are customer service and technical support?
We never really contact technical support. Typically, if we face issues, we try to handle it in house by ourselves. There is pretty good documentation available, and in that sense, we're satisfied with the level of information we can find to help us navigate the solution.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was not complex. It was quite straightforward. However, we don't use it in any complicated way.
Deployment is very fast. It only takes about an hour or so to set up.

Owner at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Scalability and expanding capacity are easily done in a short amount of time
Pros and Cons
- "If there is a virus going into the network, it has to pass through an Ubuntu server, which can't be infected by the virus. So, there are less viruses on our systems."
- "An easier to configure firewall would be a good add-on."
What is our primary use case?
I used it before on my laptop, and I was quite happy with it. I had to change back to Windows 8 when we got a new product which is not supported by Linux. To show our product to our customers, I had to go back to Windows.
I still have an older laptop which is using the Ubuntu version on it. I am still quite happy with it. I have not had so many compatibility problems between Ubuntu and Windows as I have had with Mac.
How has it helped my organization?
Our biggest issue is cybersecurity. In 2013, we decided to protect our network with a Linux server. If there is a virus going into the network, it has to pass through an Ubuntu server, which can't be infected by the virus. So, there are less viruses on our systems.
What is most valuable?
Linux is more stable than Windows.
What needs improvement?
An easier to configure firewall would be a good add-on.
I would like some antiviruses, since what you get on the market is not much. However, if you want to protect your network, there should be an easier way to configure security software since sometimes it can be very difficult.
For how long have I used the solution?
Three to five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable. Previously, I never had a problem.
Though, I have a problem now. I tried to install Microsoft SQL Server on a new Ubuntu machine, and it is not working at 100 percent. This is following Microsoft's install instructions, not Ubuntu's.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I had a customer who was using NGINX running on Ubuntu servers in three different data centers. After getting more servers behind these NGINX Ubuntu servers, we had to resize everything. This was easily done in a very short amount of time, and we were able to expand the capacity too.
How is customer service and technical support?
I have never used the technical support.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is quite straightforward. Sometimes, I have to read a little bit. I have quite a big eBook with how to's, which I wrote myself.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is very cheap. It didn't cost anything to download a Ubuntu server version and install it on an already existing Dell server.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Cisco or Juniper.
What other advice do I have?
Most important criteria when selecting a vendor: sales support.

I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. I'm satisfied with this operating system.
We have four to five users of this solution within our organization.
I have not contacted the technical support for Ubuntu Linux yet, because I currently don't have any technical issues.
