Coming from a Cisco background, it took some time for me to get used to Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch LAN Switches because of the different commands. But I do appreciate it because it is quite similar to Linux. Some commands are interchangeable, which is a plus point because previously, our engineering roles were to look at server administration as a server administrator. Since I had some experience with Linux, I could carry over some of those experiences when dealing with Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch LAN Switches. I serve current users, primarily large corporations, as a network engineer. However, I cannot speak for how these corporations would rate Alcatel in their databases since Alcatel only provides support. From my perspective, I find that Alcatel switches may not be as intuitive as Cisco switches in terms of command execution. The commands for Alcatel products can be less obvious compared to Cisco. So, I rate the overall solution a seven or eight out of ten.
We are business partners. We are only selling Alcatel. I would recommend this solution to others who are interested in using it. I would rate Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch LAN Switches a ten out of ten.
Overall, this is a good product and there are many benefits to using Alcatel-Lucent. It is definitely one that I recommend. If the support were better for us then it would be perfect. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Find out what your peers are saying about Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and others in LAN Switching. Updated: February 2025.
LAN Switching refers to the method of directing data within a local area network using switches, providing efficient data transfer and minimal latency.
Switches operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model, managing data packets using MAC addresses. This enhances network efficiency and ensures data is directed to the correct recipient. Experts note that switches can significantly reduce data collisions compared to hubs, making them crucial for modern high-speed networks.
