Licensing cost is the biggest argument I get from those divesting from Splunk. There are those within our organization who say we are going to go to other tools since Splunk is too expensive. Till now, I have been able to ask others to look at the value Splunk adds to the company, and I have been able to convince them that it is worth it, but that might not always be the case if licensing continues to be an issue, especially if costs continue the way they are and if other solutions offer more competitive pricing for similar results.

Splunk's infrastructure monitoring costs can be high because our billing is based on data volume measured in terabytes, rather than the number of devices being monitored. Replacing legacy systems with Splunk could cost up to $200,000.
Splunk has been fairly expensive, but it has been predictable. You are not punished if you are looking into much more data if you are, for example, under attack. Other tools could be more expensive to use if they charge per incident or the amount of data you are looking into. With other solutions, you could be punished if you need to index more data because of an attack, such as a DDoS attack, and you need to do some forensics on the data.
I understand Splunk wants people to move towards Cloud licensing for a lot of the newer features, especially for multi-cloud. It would be nice to see those in Enterprise. I understand why they do it but that is my main concern.

We use a free version of the solution. There is also an enterprise option as well. The product has a fairly flexible licensing model. You buy based on your requirements, whether it is six months or a year.
The solution's pricing is competitive. There is a need to make yearly payments for the licensing part. I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten. The price of the solution could be cheaper.

It's affordable when you compare it to HPSA - the HP Server Administration. You get the things according to your data - the data that you need to report on. The capacity of the data that you need to report on. Right now, it's set to 100GBs. We've got the license for 100GBs.

I am sure the pricing is reasonable or we would not continue to use the product in such a minimal capacity. We are fine with the price of the product and we are happy that it does what we need it to do.
As far as pricing, you can negotiate with the company, but I'd say the price is fairly high for the product. The typical price for competing products is also quite high, so it is not necessarily bad. It's a good product — that is not the problem. But there is more and more competition in the market and their prices stay high. I think that the pricing and marketing situation gets more difficult for Splunk. By comparison, with our tools in the other solution we use, you can do the same evaluation. All you need is an employee to run the product, but the pricing is way lower. So, I think that cost has become an issue for Splunk over the long run. There are also costs in addition to the standards licensing which raises the cost even more.

I would rate the pricing of this solution a two, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the most expensive and 10 being the best price.
