We use VMware NSX for our micro-segmentation needs. We have been using it for the past four years. VMware NSX is a flexible security management tool with excellent micro-segmentation abilities. With NSX, our security teams can easily divide our data center into logical segments and define services and features for each segment. For our organization, it is very important to have whatever is necessary for us to properly segment or control the traffic from virtual machine to virtual machine. This is definitely the case with NSX.
Some of the benefits of using NSX include:
Better security: The micro-segmentation helps us improve security by enabling security architects to seamlessly divide data centers into different segments. They can either be on premises or on the cloud. NSX provides very good access and security management control for every single VM we create.
Increased performance: The solution also improves network performance. Dividing our network into small subnets minimizes the amount of broadcast packets and helps speed up our network performance.
Reliable support: The support we receive from VMware Global for NSX is exceptional. Customer service is 10/10. Technical support is 10/10 as well. I believe the level of support depends on the type of account you have and your geographic location, however.
Stability: This is a stable product. We don't experience any issues with bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. After each release we see even more improvements to the stability of the solution. I’d say that the performance of the tool is very good.
Scalability: The solution is highly scalable. One of the biggest infrastructures we have deployed the solution on has around 70,000 people using the solution. In the 2.4 version, the controller got merged to create the cluster manager, which makes it even easier to scale.
Centralized management: The NSX management platform is really easy to use. We like the management dashboard and the telemetry. NSX provides a single pane of glass. You can do the switching, routing, load balancing, IPS, and more from one central screen.
Integration: NSX offers multiple integration options. It integrates easily with other VMware products but also integrates seamlessly with third-party tools like Palo Alto. Using the management dashboard, it is very easy to set up integration with all other VMware solutions, such as vSphere, as well as with other third-party security platforms. We have many integrations and are able to see each virtual machine's end-to-end visibility.
This solution can sometimes be complex to deploy for large networks. The initial installation feels at first a little complex because there are a lot of components, but it gets a lot easier once you have a better understanding of the system.
VMware NSX can improve the migration tools from the older environments to the new environment. They have some solutions that are still in use but considered legacy. It would be nice if there were a proper tool for migrating.
Overall, this is a very helpful tool for micro-segmentation. I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
What is microsegmentation? Microsegmentation is the latest current trend in security to protect data and reduce threat risk in operating systems and cloud environments. It is a security solution process that has been created to intuitively compartmentalize the data by workload within an organization’s operating systems. Security architects can develop protocols to define how all traffic moves throughout your ecosystem - north-south and east-west. It will also limit which devices can...
