An easy-to-scale open-source solution used for monitoring events on devices
The area for improvement is a lot. When I started using it on our enterprise side, the issue we faced was, for example, if we were running at that time on AlienVault OSSIM v5.7.4. So, for some orders, we had to install some packages, and when we tried installing that package, some dependencies got upgraded to a new version. Now once that dependency got upgraded, the SQL, since you might be aware that OSSIM uses SQL database, now SQL and all the dependency in everything was not on the same version, and that caused the database to crash. The aforementioned area should be eased out by upgrading the patches and upgrading dependencies. This kind of thing is a disadvantage of OSSIM, and I would like them to work on this. But I have also raised service requests many times and gave it a push on the community section too. However, since it is a local source, they don't reply much over there. That is why I don't like to work on OSSIM because it is unpredictable. Once the storage goes above 50 percent, it starts behaving unpredictably. If you get stuck with a situation, then you need to drill a lockdown into that. Sometimes you get no luck. Then you have to just reimage the server with the new fresh OS of AlienVault. As for additional features, not much because if you move to the newer version, it is kind of getting more stable. But, to make my life easier, then I would say try to give more features. I know it's open source, so they also cannot provide me with more features. But still, if they can provide me with more features because right now it's becoming old. Right now, we are even moving from SIEM to Security Data Lake. So when we move to it, this will be literally outdated. No one can even expect anything out of it. The way security is moving, it will be outdated very soon. They have to also provide something new to keep this going for the future also.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is free to use."
"OSSIM is the only solution that includes the large number of modules that we need: a vulnerability scanner, a network IDS system, a host IDS system."
"It has helped us remediate threats in the past by providing significant events that assisted in identifying suspicious activities, such as logins from multiple countries."
"The open vault component and the checking of vulnerabilities are the most valuable features. The page management helps with this. If you know how your device is vulnerable at least you can do something about it."
"Inbuilt IDS, inbuilt integration with threat intelligence platform and with vulnerability assessment modules."
"I recommend it due to the experience of the people running it."
"Better than other SIEM solutions because almost everything can be integrated."
"Asset discovery is good."
"Seceon Open Threat Management Platform notifies only genuine alerts. It offers plenty of options that are suitable for MSPs."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is its artificial intelligence."
"It is effective because it has threat intelligence from across the world and constantly checks and updates for new threats."
"It offers a holistic approach with multiple solutions blended into one platform."
"The solution is stable."
"The pricing of Seceon Open Threat Management Platform is very reasonable."
"You can use different solutions in a single platform which is very easy and attractive for customers."
"The most valuable features are behaviour analytics, threat intelligence, endpoint detection, and response features."

Cons

"The main area where the AlienVault product was lacking around the 2018 timeframe was in its ability to scale."
"I suggest more in-built rules based on modern threats and environments to make it a more competitive solution."
"AlienVault OSSIM failed to provide our company a full insight, while also giving out a lot of false positives."
"The incidence reporting could be better."
"Sometimes technical issues take very long to get resolved."
"It's so hard to configure and explore something new on it."
"AlienVault OSSIM on-premise version is more difficult to implement than the cloud version. Additionally, they should add integration between several different environments at once and improve their online knowledge base."
"There are somewhat more false positives with the user behavior analytics, which could benefit from an additional machine learning model to detect user patterns more rapidly."
"Certain features, such as DLP, need to be improved as they are superficial and not in-depth."
"For small to medium-sized customers, Seceon Open Threat Management Platform is good. However, for large enterprises, it is not as effective."
"It would be better if they offered global coverage."
"For future releases, integrating incident response tools and improving communication on incident reporting could be beneficial."
"The management console could use some enhancements."
"We are at the client’s end, offering services. They don’t know about security rules and benchmarks. We are working on the discovery and remediation but we don’t really have the intelligence that was available while working with other tools. Human working is also very essential for the solution. The automatic session is impossible to play since it needs to touch Redfin for further analysis. No one has breached our clients."
"The dashboard has always been an issue."
"Seceon Open Threat Management Platform sells some add-ons as part of the whole suite but not individually. If they sold them individually, they could potentially attract more business."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When comparing AlienVault OSSIM to Microsoft Sentinel, AlienVault OSSIM incurs additional costs due to its licensing price structure. If you are using AlienVault for security purposes at a certain level it can have a higher price point than the current pricing of Microsoft Sentinel."
"AlienVault OSSIM is free."
"AlienVault pricing is the best. Whatever cost you are paying, you are getting a return on every penny... It's not like your IBM, your QRadar, or Splunk, where the cost is too high."
"The tool's licensing costs are yearly."
"The price of AlienVault OSSIM is too high sometimes for us to present to our customers. The price should be lower. We are on a three-year license to use the solution. We had to pay extra for the support."
"OSSIM is free."
"We are using a free version of the solution. If you purchase a license there are more features available but the price is a little high. The solution should be cheaper to allow more customers to be able to afford it."
"The licensing fees for the non-community edition are paid on an annual basis, and there are no costs in addition to this."
"We used the solution's trial version for two months and later purchased it."
"Seceon Open Threat Management Platform is cost-effective because it's a comprehensive platform that offers high availability."
"The solution is cheap and very competitive. It offers good tuning in terms of the pricing. Other solutions like Palo Alto and IBM are more expensive."
"I find Seceon OTM's pricing to be reasonable, not too high or low, just okay for the market standards. I can't disclose specific figures, we pay on a quarterly basis under a service model. I would rate it eight out of ten. As a customer, I always hope for better pricing options."
"It has a per-asset model instead of an ingestion-based model, which gives predictable pricing. In terms of price, it is in the middle to lower range of SIEMs that it competes against. It is the most affordable solution that we have implemented so far. It was much more affordable than anything else I've implemented."
"The price is quite reasonable."
"The pricing is very competitive. It's not expensive."
