Amazon EKS: Why It Shines, Where It Struggles, and How It Can Improve
* EKS incurs an additional management fee ($0.10 per hour per cluster) along with EC2 or Fargate costs.May be expensive for smaller workloads compared to alternatives like AWS ECS.Requires expertise to configure and manage Kubernetes resources effectively.Networking (e.g., setting up VPCs, subnets, and service endpoints) can be complex.Simplifies managing multiple Kubernetes clusters, especially for organizations with hybrid or multi-region setups.Integrated dashboards for Kubernetes metrics, logs, and traces.Simplifies observability without needing third-party tools.

Helps to avoid downtime by creating new ports
We did contact Nutanix support during implementation but not for server-level application implementation. It was for a network-based implementation when we had uplink issues, which Nutanix resolved. We also faced a migration issue related to an agent that needs to run on the Nutanix VM. This agent runs on a specific port, which other applications on the VMware instance might use. We changed that particular port, and it's working fine now. It just took a two or three minute call to resolve. Nutanix support responded quickly. We raised a call, and within half an hour to an hour, they joined on Webex. They checked our configuration and shared a document with changes that weren't persistent after the reboot. Later, they made process changes at the OS level, not on Nutanix. We needed to make some service-level changes on the OS, which were applied successfully. Now, after every reboot, we get the desired output.

Pros

"Amazon EKS allows upscaling and downscaling by reallocating resources."
"The most valuable feature is the computing speed."
"The product helps us to configure the new environment."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The tool works well with the nodes in AWS. It's scalability is also good in terms of architecture."
"The solution has very good basic features."
"Amazon EKS offers replatforming and migration capabilities to our customers, enabling them to move from AWS to other platforms like AKS with minimal changes."
"Amazon EKS is a useful solution for modern, cloud-native applications. It offers both horizontal and vertical scaling, which is a big advantage. The tool can also help manage costs while maintaining high availability."
"Nutanix's support is really good."
"The solution is embedded in the hypervisor and there are no deployment costs."
"The most valuable features of the Nutanix Kubernetes Engine (NKE) are its simplicity and efficiency during the initial cluster creation phase."
"The technical support is excellent."
"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"We can add some add-ons and plugins to the product if we need to."
"We can do a lot of provisioning."
"The solution provides no downtime features. If we face issues, we create a new port, deploy it there, and then drop the existing one. This way, we avoid NKE downtime on our website."

Cons

"There is room for improvement in stability. I faced some problems with the App."
"A cluster is required on-premises, which takes a lot of time."
"I encountered problems with the product’s documentation."
"The documentation part of the product is an area of concern that needs to be made easier from an improvement perspective."
"I believe the initial setup could be a better experience and faster customer support."
"I am not impressed with the tool's Amazon console. It also needs to add security features."
"The main thing to improve with Amazon EKS is the price. However, these services can be very expensive. For example, in countries like Turkey, the cost is too high. That's why we offer our cloud solutions locally. We developed hybrid solutions, but their prices are still very high."
"They should enhance the Jira integration."
"We need a backup of production clusters."
"GUI lacks sufficient information to help with understanding the installation and process."
"I would like to have more nodes for availability and storage."
"NKE could benefit from additional features that support more advanced Kubernetes functionalities and configurations."
"The product lacks some virtualization capabilities, making it an area for improvement where the solution can focus on providing users with more virtualization capabilities related to disk systems."
"One major issue we faced was that appliances couldn't migrate from VMware to the tool. However, this seems to be a common problem across platforms. We've seen the same issue when migrating from VMware to RHV or other solutions. It's not specifically a Nutanix problem but rather an issue migrating appliances from one VM infrastructure to another. Some kernel-level and storage-level issues impact this process."
"In the next release, I would like to have automatic dynamic scaling, both upscaling and downscaling."
"Nutanix has limitations compared to VMware, particularly in testing and industry tie-ups with different OEMs. Deploying virtual machines, especially for industrial automation, can be challenging due to compatibility issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Amazon EKS is quite pricey, but the functionality it provides is worth it."
"The solution is cheaper than one of its competitors."
"The tool's pricing is good."
"The product pricing depends on the specific requirements."
"Amazon EKS has fair pricing. It's better in terms of pricing than other platforms."
"Amazon EKS’s pricing is ok compared to its competitors."
"Amazon EKS is not a cheap solution."
"Amazon EKS is expensive."
"I rate NKE's pricing a six out of ten."
"I rate the product price a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"The platform is averagely priced. I rate the pricing as four out of ten."
"The product's licenses are included in the software version deployed in our data center."
"While deploying Kubernetes clusters on Nutanix is cost-effective, there may be additional costs for remote branch offices where Kubernetes is less common."
