We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Commvault software is a single platform where you can enable whatever you want to use, like endpoint protection. You can enable those licenses on a single platform screen. This is where I see the value ad. This is a single management tool.""The expanse of the decoys that they have is valuable. They cover everything on the corporate side that you would think of, such as Windows, Linux, and even applications like SAP. They also go into the OT environment and emulate OT devices as well.""Not everyone has agents for everything and Commvault has agents for most products. It's the most complete.""The most valuable feature of Commvault HyperScale X is the automatic nature of its operation. We don't need to worry about sets of documents. It worked automatically, we don't need to think about it. When you set the solution up in a good way, you don't need to worry.""When an interruption takes place due to an incident, the signaling and notification are very extensive.""The most valuable features of Commvault Complete Data Protection are the complete feature sets it provides in one platform. You are able to backup many different types of data, such as virtual machines, servers, cloud, endpoints, Microsoft Office365, and Gmail. The usage of the solution is flexible.""We can go from one page to another page, from office backups to VM backups, or applications like secret backups. So everything can be configured or restored from a single pin.""The cloud integration is a massive win for us, giving us a single backup service for all of our on-premise and cloud systems."

"The most valuable feature is the flashback standby, which allows us to test without scrapping the database.""The solution can scale as needed.""The most valuable feature is the application or promotional code used in the production protocol to transfer data to the secondary database, situated on the DR site.""We have not encountered any major challenges with replication. We were able to achieve near-real-time replication. Also, with the switchover failover, we were not getting any technical issues. It's a pretty stable product.""The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any bugs, glitches, or crashes. We find it to be quite reliable.""The most valuable aspect for me is undoubtedly the failover capability and the assurance of data safety provided by Oracle Data Guard.""If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary.""Backup and application continuity are most valuable."

Cons
"You need quite a lot of human resources to maintain a Commvault environment, to keep it operational. Also, it would be nice to if there were an easier way set up some Commvault components.""I would like them to keep working on the new web interface to migrate out of the old interface because the old interface is a bit complex. It was driving customers away because of the complexity. If they migrate everything (100 percent of the features), this would make the product be perfect.""The solution requires constant attention. Commvault is very complex. We are constantly making adjustments and working through hotfixes, updates, and issues.""Additional SaaS application support would be good... we have SaaS applications that may not be big enough for Commvault to support yet. Box.com is one we've asked about for years, and it's just not on the radar, as far as I know.""The only problem is that some of what we snap most of is the VMs. We found about 10% of the VMs that we can't snap because they're too interactive. It actually causes the application to crash.""The tool must improve the 1-Touch recovery of Oracle and Active Directory.""Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage.""The integration of Metallic could improve. It would be a benefit if Metallic could integrate with multiple applications or platforms."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us.""We would like to be able to see the date time stamp when you execute DGMGRL commands.""The usage of block storage devices in the cloud or migration of a type of storage from one site to another site can be improved. Currently, we have to use multi-node to single node because of the lack of storage support on the Azure side. It did not really work. Our DBA had to spend a lot of time tweaking the Data Guard tools, or the underlying Oracle VMs, to make sure that Data Guard would run on top of different types of storage. So, if it can support transporting or getting from one type of storage to another type of storage in a different site or a different technology, it would be very helpful.""When the data replicates into the standby database there is a possibility of having a microsecond amount of data loss. The data loss occurs when there is a network disconnection between the primary and secondary standby database located in the data centers or if there is a crash in the primary database.""Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle.""A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage.""The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
