We performed a comparison between DataCore SANsymphony and HPE SimpliVity based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two HCI solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete."
"This was a great implementation for a small to mid-size business."
"The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers."
"When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three."
"We are running Hyper-V on twin servers in failover, and being able to manage servers from anywhere I need to, virtually, has been a game changer."
"Ten gigabit Ethernet compatibility, support, ease of use, and management are some positive features."
"Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair."
"It allows me to configure High Availability and failover clustering with some fault tolerance, at a cost point that doesn’t break the bank for a small business budget."
"The features I have found most valuable are the active-active, or so-called grid technology, and the integration into our VMware-vCenter."
"The synchronous mirror allows us to operate a fully redundant storage solution that is distributed across two sites."
"DataCore has helped provide flexible, highly available, high-performance storage that otherwise would have been outside our price range."
"Our central storage has very high availability. DataCore SANsymphony ensures high business continuity."
"The DataCore system has been rock solid since we have been using it - from 2007 on."
"SANsymphony is flexible, with many potential options for implementation. SANsymphony's can be used with VMware, Hyper-V, or even with a hypervisor agnostic approach. It can also be used for strictly physical non-virtualized solutions."
"During the maintenance periods, on any part of the storage or VMware migration, we have had no downtime."
"An advantage of SANsymphony is its ease of use, especially when installing or upgrading the system."
"The performance is good. It's stable and easy to operate."
"Valuable features include ease of use, disaster recovery, and reliability."
"The solution is very stable."
"It is simple and easy to use."
"The most valuable aspect of the HPE SimpliVity is the DL380 G10. We have mostly been using VMware and Hyper-V. On one side we have Hyper-V and the other side we have the VMware."
"The accelerator card is a lifesaver for speeding up backups."
"Our clients are very comfortable with the single management of the complete stack. The creation of VM systems is also very fast."
"We use the Omnicubes to replicate our data to a second datacenter. By having our company data on the Omnicubes, we ensure that all of our data is constantly replicated within the defined intervals to the remote site."
"I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows."
"We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind."
"Although minor, some of the documentation could be rewritten to be clearer."
"The logs can also become very noisy when there is an issue, which is very infrequent."
"Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers."
"It would be great to have more automated tooling around managing the iSCSI connections in Windows"
"Perhaps more reporting features on the utilization, usage, and performance of the configured high-availability images and underlying physical disks would be helpful."
"Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved."
"I think the performance reporting can be improved by adding historical statistics into a database for the purpose of comparing."
"Right now, the version used is run on Microsoft Windows Server. Having a Linux version or even an appliance would be better as it would eliminate the use of additional licensing for another piece of hardware."
"The alert system could have more features."
"Management could be improved. The management console sometimes reacts very slowly."
"I still see room for improvement with DataCore SANsymphony in the area of alarm and task management."
"Datacore is developing a new WebUI with new dashboards. It is a good idea as the classic GUI is lacking dashboards."
"I would like for it to improve into a more ergonomic management console and a translation into the French language. It should have some process for a shutdown of a VM properly in case of a problem."
"If you're dealing with big databases or transactional databases, it might not be the best-suited solution. The design of DataCore's solution isn't oriented towards this type of data."
"Not being able to apply ESXi patches as needed has always been a concern, but it has not become a big issue."
"I would love to see a more proactive approach to implementing patches and reaching out to customers with new initiatives."
"In terms of what I would define as a perfect solution, I am looking for one that is easy to manage, has a real user-friendly interface, and something that is not too complex."
"It's a very complex installation. It's gotten easier, however, it's far from a double click on a link and a self-upgrade scenario. There's still an awful lot of magic that goes down to doing upgrades."
"The technical support is weak. It is a layered product. It has a software solution on top of the SimpliVity solution, which is built on top of the hardware of the HPE DL380s. When we call for a problem that we know is related to the DL380, we get a SimpliVity guy trying to solve a SimpliVity problem. If it is not a SimpliVity problem, it's a hardware problem. So, it takes awhile for them to figure out which part of the organization should really be helping us."
"The solution's price could be lower, but it holds good value for the money. The VMware licensing costs have skyrocketed since Broadcom's takeover."
"We have had some failures out-of-the-box. We have had some failures with the OmniStack module. One thing that we didn't fully understand was how much of the internal memory was used up by the OmniStack piece, which basically makes up SimpliVity."
"I'm not a technical guy, and I am pretty much okay with the way it is, but it would help if it was closest to Nutanix in Gartner's Magic Quadrants. Nutanix very often beats us. Nutanix provides Acropolis for free. It probably would be great if we have a virtualization layer. It is something that might be lacking in our solution. We depend on VMware, and it is very expensive. It is lacking the software that allows us to install it with HPE and not depend on a third party."
