Superior platform with excellent snapshots and cost-saving auto-tiering
I'm a big fan of the SC Series platform. Its feature set is superior to some of the other platforms. The snapshots on SC are excellent, allowing for multiple snapshot schedules for any one system. The auto-tiering functionality intelligently moves new data to the highest performance tier and then progresses it down to less expensive tiers over time, providing cost savings for customers.

Offers good support but there are issues with the language barrier
Huawei has a lot of penetration into accounts in Islamabad and the whole region, especially in Islamabad, because this is where our capital is, this is where most of the government offices are. They have a really nice marketing team that keeps on promoting all of their successes over various platforms. They are relatively cheaper when it comes to cloud services but they have a few weaknesses at the same time. IBM has AI tools and they have IBM Watson and Huawei doesn't. If you compare our deployment team from IBM versus our technical team from Huawei, with IBM we have five people, and for Huawei, we have 20 people. There is a major difference because you're getting more business from Huawei compared to IBM. We have a separate team for administration, installation, configuration, storage, and cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is the speed for the end-user."
"Dell SC Series offers a lot of performance, being one of the best performing storages Dell ever made."
"It is just as stable as any other high-end solution."
"With federation, you can have multiple systems across sites. You can treat them as one, and with a live migration, volumes don't go down. You can move them from site to site, doing maintenance, and keep your environment up."
"Customers are most impressed with SC's provisioning because you don't need to buy a large amount of storage upfront. It's pay-as-you-grow. It also has solid compression and duplication features."
"Easy management of volumes: You can create volumes and easily assign them to VMware clusters, increasing their size."
"One of the most valuable features is the capability to switch between all-flash to hybrid, which have have actually done for one of our arrays. We started with the hybrid, with the limited if I'm not mistaken, and then over a period of time, we swapped all the hybrids with the SSDs. This was one of the big features because it gave us the capability to not stick with just one kind of media. Secondly, since it has sorted clustering, we were able to bring in the newer boxes and have it all clustered together. These were the two main features that we really looked into, which benefited our use case from an expansion/growth perspective. Another valuable feature is the ease of management."
"The process of reallocating data from fast disks (SSD or SAS) to slow disks (SATA) gives you better performance and better use of resources."
"Huawei has a lot of penetration into accounts in Islamabad and the whole region, especially in Islamabad, because this is where our capital is, this is where most of the government offices are."

Cons

"The ease of use could be improved. It took me a while to learn it."
"I would like to see higher compression, dedupe, faster I/O, and bigger drives."
"An issue we had was that the controller went down during an upgrade because of their upgrading the code. One side of the switch was down."
"Overall, I'd like to see more synergy between Dell EMC's higher-tier platforms and their mid-tier platforms. What I have said, constantly, to my partners at Dell EMC is that the clear articulation of the path is really important to us. In that vein, what I'd also like to see is, with the migration strategy that's built into this product, a lot more attention paid to Dell's - in particular - legacy platforms and how we get from some of our legacy EMC platforms onto this platform with a straight-through migration and scaling strategy, not host-based migrations and not piecemeal... Dell EMC would do well to focus more on my ability to skip a generation, rather than having me take individual hops because I can't greenfield my way into a software-defined data center fast enough. This journey of multiple hops is not helpful."
"I would like to have 100% functionality through the web app."
"I would like to improve the processing ability."
"From a performance point of view, it's getting a bit old."
"This solution could be improved if overall performance was improved and operated with a higher speed and supported a higher volume of RAM."
"It is an expensive product. They should lower the price."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing depends on varying life cycles."
"It's absolutely affordable. Again, not having to do a forklift upgrade like some of the others have had to do in the past, it's very affordable for our customers and they continue to buy."
"We have the basic license for the use of this solution and it is a permanent license. The overall cost could be less, it is expensive."
"We were able to afford two tiers of flash storage at a price where the competition was giving us one tier or just a handful of discs."
"Always keep in mind, this is not just a enclosure with disks is a complete SAN as a service. There is software, license, and storage in one single solution."
"Support typically depends on the array. It can range anywhere from $7,000 to a couple of hundred thousand dollars."
"The scalability seems a bit more expensive than even buying a brand new one so far. That has been kind of a drawback."
"The pricing of Dell EMC Compellent is competitive."
