Very stable and scales quickly, allowing us to roll out new services
At one point, we had HPE EVAs and when we were changing them out we didn't just look at 3PAR, we looked at all the solutions. We actually started out with a V400 which is an older version of the 3PAR - they didn't have the 7400s as yet - at our data center. Eventually, when the V400 became end-of-life, we looked at all the EVAs and by that time, they had come out with the 7400 and 7200, which are a lot less expensive and a better fit for a smaller organization. We were able to throw any workload on it and not worry about performance. It certainly made my job easy and my team's job easy in terms of maintenance and management of the platform.

Has the ability to automatically deal with faulty disks
In terms of the most beneficial features of the product, I would say that during the faulty disk replacement process, the tool automatically ungroups the faulty disk, so from the tool itself, anybody can identify which disk is faulty and then repair it. The data replication part is not enabled in the product that I use since the DRP feature is not enabled. I work with the product's high availability feature. Considering the size of the environment where the product is used, the product offers around 80 to 90 TB of storage space. I won't recommend the product to others who plan to use it. The implementation process of the product would be as per the standard of the organization where it is going to be used. Everyone should have their own organizational data structure as per the data orientation needs. I rate the tool an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution’s deduplication functionality works great. We are getting about a 16:1 dedupe ratio on our VM workloads."
"HPE 3PAR StoreServ is an enterprise storage that is mainly deployed in enterprise scenarios like banking and insurance."
"It's a very popular product for enterprise storage."
"We have our backups set up to replicate between two sites, then we also have our storage set up to replicate between two sites."
"It is easy to manage and performs very well."
"The solution has helped our organization reduce time to deployment by about 60 to 70 percent, because I am able to spin up new systems within four to six hours, where it used to take me two to three days."
"I found it easy to deploy and simple to configure the storage."
"You can scale it out almost indefinitely."
"It is very stable."
"The solution's most valuable feature is storage provisioning, which allows me to easily provision the disk space on the servers."
"HPE has reliable support for HDD replacement."
"There have been no fail-stop failures for the last five years."

Cons

"It's a very complex platform to manage and it's not cheap either. It doesn't really give us the level of flexibility we had for very, very small workloads."
"The interface could be improved to match the system."
"With 3PAR, there is remote copy software which isn't very good."
"Sadly, the support from HPE has not been all that great. It is tough to get a tech out or get a response from some of the techs that we have."
"I want artificial intelligence. I don't want anybody from my team to touch it anymore. I want the AI to do everything."
"Generally, the management of the multiple systems that we have is really the only problem, always having to go to all these separate tools to manage everything."
"Upgrades on them are a bit tricky. For us to do a head swap on one is a full outer joiner storage frame, which is obviously not that easy to do in a production environment."
"We need additional enhancements to InfoSight, especially from a VM standpoint. Today, we can see in the Azure VM performance stats in 3PAR, but it is so huge, we can't just drill down on each and every VM and look at its performance."
"Performance could probably be improve with faster controllers, but it is already an old device. We do have performance problems now, but it is a rather old device, so we have what we have."
"I faced some issues during the disk replacement process in HPE EVA."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The tool’s price is higher compared to other products."
"This licensing fees for this solution are merged with all of our HP annual costs, which in total are a couple hundred thousand dollars."
"I rate the tool's pricing an eight out of ten. It is expensive."
"It is fairly inexpensive to scale."
"HPE 3PAR StoreServ is an expensive solution."
"We purchased the solution as CapEx and we only pay support now. I find the pricing fantastic."
"Since the prices of the flash storage has gone down tremendously, I would definitely recommend going for the all-flash storage array or 3PAR. It is a big expensive even now, but it will be the future of all industries."
"The licensing fee is not cheap."

Measuring Up: EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR
Leading up to EMC World 2015, IT Central Station asked how I would compare EMC XtremIO and HP 3PAR. Until recently, the flash storage conversation in my organization and many others has centered on XtremIO and Pure Storage, the leaders of the all-flash array (AFA) space. To that end, I've written a…
