Rock-solid connectivity and WiFi coverage
It's a hardwired solution so our customers do not have to use a mesh network — I really dislike that. It causes too much delay, etc. As with any product, there is always room for improvement. A good router is not cheap. A good switch is not cheap. Let's say somebody develops a new frequency — 7GHz. Well, in that case, you'd need a special router. I have some customers who request Cat7 for their homes. That's way too much. So I'd say, "What are you going to run over here? Let's just run fiber optics. Then the customer will respond, "Well, I read somewhere and other people have told me that if you're going to wire your house, go with Cat7." I'd say, "Sir, you're not going to even utilize Cat5e." I use Cat5e, and believe it or not, I can pump at 10 gigabits per second with Cat5e. The same was true with ePoE — now we have ePoE+. Some switches with ePoE cannot supply as much juice as the modern ePoE+, which requires much more power. The basic switch doesn't have the capacity to deal with that. The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic. It pretty much just covers some basic IP information, defense, and how to change the administrator password — that's pretty much it. I am a dealer, I shouldn't have to contact support for basic answers.

Cost-effective protocol support and a straightforward setup with room for login enhancements
In the network operations center, I manage our client's bandwidth. We connect with our clients through BGP and OSPF based on client demands. We also manage routing protocols, policies, internal firewalls, and other details like QE bandwidth, client manage bandwidth management, PoE, PPPoE, and DNS…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ePoE+ is great."
"Remote access to the router is a huge time saver."
"The solution is less expensive than other options."
"It's great for small businesses or home offices."
"The flexible IP firewall and IP network address translation make it very easy to give access to internal services."
"The radius and wireless features are the most valuable aspects of the solution."
"It's pretty stable."
"The solution offers very good multi-routing."
"The most valuable feature is its bandwidth management ability."
"I like the routing features."
"They use wireless and wired connections that include all of the features."

Cons

"You do need to be an IT person in order to handle the initial setup. An AV person would struggle a bit."
"Documentation and access to it could be greatly improved."
"The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic."
"It could be more scalable. Product awareness could also be better. There's a lack of awareness when it comes to MikroTik. People only know about Cisco and others, and they won't rely on MikroTik. This is primarily because of hardware limitations. While this product is good economically, it's unsuitable for high-end projects. In the next release, I want this product to be more compatible."
"They could improve their product if they set, for instance, a controller for wireless LAN. That would allow them to really have something more than an access point."
"The login process needs improvement."
"The initial setup can be a bit difficult. The configuration can take a lot of time."
"The tool needs to add more tutorials and documentation for new functions."
"f they can improve the OpenVPN, to make that a bit more straightforward, that would be ideal."
"The initial setup is a bit complex."
"There is an area of improvement. The firewall features are self-contained, but features like email scanning and voice control should be improved. This is the best routing product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price completely depends on the environment. There are no additional fees."
"MikroTik is very cost-effective and quite good for the price. It performs very well. For one of our customers, the existing setup comprises Cisco Catalyst switches, and it is about 10 to 15 years old. We're looking into upgrading in a cost-effective way to get the performance and yet still be at par with the quality and expectations that customers have from Cisco. Price-wise, Cisco is really expensive, and customers are expecting something different than Cisco so that they can save on IT costs. They don't have the same budget that they had before when they installed Cisco products. That's why they're looking for a solution that can provide performance and features without too much money or investment. We're looking at some alternative brands, such as NETGEAR and MikroTik, to support our proposal."
"Here in Bangladesh, MikroTik Routers and Switches cost 90,000 Taka, or converting that figure to dollars is $1,000."
"It's reasonably priced. It's not the most cheap solution, but also, it's not the most expensive one."
"The product is cheap compared to Cisco."
"The solution is not expensive."
"There are not any external or hidden costs."
"The pricing is very reasonable and is one of the main selling points for MikroTik devices."
"There is no licensing fee in addition to the hardware, but we do pay an annual fee for support."
