Network security enhancement with sturdy switches despite high costs
The Cisco Ethernet switches are primarily used as regular core switches for networking, distribution, and access levels. We also utilize Cisco Wi-Fi, VPN, and Wi-Fi controllers The Cisco Ethernet switches have improved our network's security, ensuring it is 100% secure by not allowing any…

Rock-solid connectivity and WiFi coverage
It's a hardwired solution so our customers do not have to use a mesh network — I really dislike that. It causes too much delay, etc. As with any product, there is always room for improvement. A good router is not cheap. A good switch is not cheap. Let's say somebody develops a new frequency — 7GHz. Well, in that case, you'd need a special router. I have some customers who request Cat7 for their homes. That's way too much. So I'd say, "What are you going to run over here? Let's just run fiber optics. Then the customer will respond, "Well, I read somewhere and other people have told me that if you're going to wire your house, go with Cat7." I'd say, "Sir, you're not going to even utilize Cat5e." I use Cat5e, and believe it or not, I can pump at 10 gigabits per second with Cat5e. The same was true with ePoE — now we have ePoE+. Some switches with ePoE cannot supply as much juice as the modern ePoE+, which requires much more power. The basic switch doesn't have the capacity to deal with that. The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic. It pretty much just covers some basic IP information, defense, and how to change the administrator password — that's pretty much it. I am a dealer, I shouldn't have to contact support for basic answers.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is extremely stable."
"Cisco Ethernet Switches have great enterprise features like Cisco DNA Assurance. Cisco DNA Assurance features advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning. Cisco AI Network Analytics, a capability within Cisco DNA Assurance, allows easy management of all devices and services, prioritizes and resolves network issues, and ensures a better user experience across the network."
"We like the stability and scalability of Cisco Ethernet Switches."
"The tool is easy to use, offering numerous options in terms of server connection."
"They are easy to use and have low maintenance requirements."
"It's all-encompassing and can help you in all these different areas. If people realize that they want something that's going to work, that's pretty foolproof, then Cisco's always worth the investment."
"The quality of service is one of the main reasons we use Cisco in our organization. It's quite high and very reliable. The switches also end up working for a long time, so there's less need to replace them as often as others. We have some switches in our company that has been running since 2006, for example. They are quite old, but they still work."
"In terms of most valuable feature, I would say the user interface."
"The ePoE+ is great."
"The solution is less expensive than other options."
"Remote access to the router is a huge time saver."

Cons

"It'll also help if it can support more network utilization."
"From a system integrator's perspective, Cisco must train system integrators, partners, and customers about their services."
"The dashboard needs some minor improvements."
"Firewall features should be pre-enabled in Cisco Ethernet switches. FortiGate switches are considered more valuable because they have firewall capabilities."
"In the case of an already existing network, we encounter technical issues related to following protocols."
"The solution's pricing could be improved."
"Cisco is not user-friendly. It would be best if you had a technical expert. The graphical user interface is more like a command line, and most functionalities are on the command line."
"Firewall features should be pre-enabled in Cisco Ethernet switches."
"The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic."
"Documentation and access to it could be greatly improved."
"You do need to be an IT person in order to handle the initial setup. An AV person would struggle a bit."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing for this product is high but the cost is worth it if you can afford it."
"There are different licensing based on the model of the solution."
"Quality comes at a price. I've been around the block a bit, and I know that good quality comes at a price. However, some of the organizations don't have big budgets, so you have to develop different solutions for them. They don't have the budget to get some of the high-end features. Cisco can consider providing entry-level hardware to suit SMBs."
"The price of this solution is high."
"It could be cheaper."
"Cisco products are not cheap, which is something that can be improved."
"These switches are expensive, but they are an excellent buy and definitely have value for the investment."
"The equipment might be more expensive, but when you take total ownership of the configuration, maintenance, and analysis, then it's a large benefit. Sometimes customers see only the first cost of the switches and don't look any further. This is a weak point of Cisco."
"The price completely depends on the environment. There are no additional fees."

Benefits of Juniper vs Cisco
Both are decent products. I prefer Juniper for the following reasons: 1) Cleaner separation of data plane from control plane. Higher end Cisco devices are better at this but most of the lower end products still seem to be more integrated than I like. 2) The Hierarchical config design means I can…
