Our organization ran comparison tests to determine whether Cisco or Juniper Ethernet switches were the better fit for us. We decided to go with Juniper. Juniper ethernet switches are a lesser-known solution which takes into consideration the locations where its users might be working from. It offers an organization the ability to reconfigure, make changes, or store different configurations to the system remotely. Administration of switches can also be run home. Changes can be both made or stored onto the system in such a way that,once you turn on the ethernet switch, those changes will take effect immediately. Users can even set a clock for when they think that they will be in the office to turn on the switches. If they don’t make it to the office in time, the system automatically returns to the previous setting.
Cisco’s ethernet switches do not offer anything close to this level of remote access. While the system can be configured remotely when it is being rolled out, it is not nearly as robust in terms of what remote features it offers. There is only a single way to configure the system, which limits the user’s ability to make changes to the knowledge of the person writing the command codes.
Juniper ethernet switches provide a robust level of network security. They have multiple levels of firewalls and filters built in to secure the networks. You will not have to turn to additional vendors for security.
Cisco’s ethernet switches are somewhat lacking in the area of security. Many switch models do not have any kind of firewall installed, which will force you to go out and seek security from other products and companies. Even if they do have firewalls, the actual offering of security features is slim.
Conclusion
While Cisco’s ethernet switches can offer adequate services, Juniper’s Ethernet switches are significantly more robust. Its remote capabilities and security features make it by far the superior solution.
