It consolidates all logs into one place and provides required features and functionalities
Every once in a while, our IBM cloud operational implementation gets behind. Sometimes, when we have a customer event, we do not get access to the latest logs for about 30 minutes, particularly for the sites that are heavily utilized. This is clearly not good. It is impossible to do RCA when you can't look at the logs that pertain to the time period in which the event occurred. It could be more of an operational problem than a feature problem. I don't have visibility about whether it is a LogDNA issue or just an operational issue.

Splunk Cloud Platform has areas for improvement, including the fact that it is obviously an enterprise tool and can be expensive, which is the biggest complaint I have noted. Costs can rise due to high data ingestion and long retention periods, along with a complex licensing structure that makes pricing difficult to predict as usage grows, especially since more systems send logs. There are also performance concerns at scale where users have reported slower searches and expensive long-term storage needs, particularly in multi-terabyte environments. Additionally, operational complexity exists as enterprises still need to do data onboarding, create dashboards, handle retention policies, access control, and performance tuning. These are the three key areas of improvement I have identified.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution aggregates all event streams, so that if there are any issues, it's all in the same interface."
"We haven't had anything yet that we couldn't do through LogDNA."
"LogDNA consolidates all logs into one place, which is super valuable."
"With LogDNA, which brings all the logs together in an interleaved stream, it allows us to take a transaction and relate it to other contextual events making the gathering of evidence for auditors and our internal RCA much more productive."
"Splunk Cloud Platform is the easiest solution we found; every time we worked with Splunk and other IBM solutions, it proved to be reliable."
"As a certified Splunk Architect, I consider Splunk the best solution when comparing it with competitors including Elastic, Sumo Logic, Datadog, and Microsoft."
"The most valuable feature for me is the flexibility of being able to send the log to the https endpoint."
"For my purposes, I like the ability to aggregate lots of data from different sources. I like being able to report for management and being able to get alerts on thresholds being out of sync."
"The most valuable features are reliability and logging. It's in the cloud so it has more stability and easy maintenance."
"We use Splunk Cloud primarily as a troubleshooting tool, so the most valuable features are the analysis and visualization."
"Splunk helped reduce our mean time to resolve by around 60%."
"In an enterprise, you need a universal or heavy forwarder. If you don't have that, you need an HSE token or API request call and all the different components. In Splunk Cloud, you just have one instance to search all the data in your index. You don't need to manage it because Splunk handles that."

Cons

"Scalability could be improved; we are using it through the IBM cloud deployment and on some of the data centers that are very heavily used, there is a significant lag in the event stream, sometimes 10, 15 minutes behind, which makes the RCA impossible."
"No ability to encapsulate a query or a filter, and communicate or share that among the team."

"Extracting meaningful insights beyond essential log data proves challenging due to the product's reliance on manual processes."
"Although there is documentation available, it is really hard for me to find relevant topics on what it is that I'm searching for."
"The queries and pulling out the exact reports is a little challenging."
"From an enterprise standpoint, we are more limited in terms of what data we can export and how we can present it."
"It is worth reconsidering the syntax language and changing it to KQL."
"The on-premises version of Splunk includes all the integrations, while the Cloud platform lacks certain integrations and is limited in terms of the number of supported apps."
"We face occasional downtime issues where when we try to scale up, we face a considerable amount of challenges."
"In the case of knowledge objects, even a Splunk admin does not have access to delete them. If we want to remove a knowledge object, we need to contact Splunk support and raise a case. After that, they delete it. They should give us access to delete knowledge objects."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It is a touchy subject because we are locked into it. That goes back to the rehydrating data. We cannot have the retention that we want to store for legal and compliance purposes because that is seven years' worth of data for some of the indexes, so we ship them off into S3 buckets and install them there, at which point they are invisible to Splunk, so we have to rehydrate them, but we cannot rehydrate those pockets into Splunk Cloud. We have to rehydrate them into a self-hosted version of Splunk, which can take days to set up and get going. I would not call Splunk's licensing and pricing predatory, but they have made it very difficult to maintain the independence of your own data."
"Splunk is a bit more expensive than some solutions, but customers can derive more value from it due to the features it has."
"The lack of transparency around the SVC licensing makes it difficult to explain the costs to our clients."
"There are additional features that you would need to purchase depending on your use case."
"Currently, we have the ingest-based license. They are offering SVC-based licenses as well, but I am not a fan of SVC-based licensing. At the end of the day, I want to predict my budget and how much I am going to pay to the vendor so that I can plan my yearly budget."
"The pricing model makes this an expensive solution."
"We were on ingest. We were on-prem, and when we switched to the cloud, we went to an SVC model, and that has been a huge help. We are now able to ingest more data than before."
"I do not have much idea. We previously used 1 GB at the cost of $600. Both on-prem and cloud licenses have the same price. There is no difference. It did not impact the cost because the costs of the on-prem license and the cloud license are the same. We did not have any issues with that. Overall, its price is reasonable."
