A cloud SaaS solution for collaboration with customer support
Firstly, we use this solution to enable collaboration among our international teams. Our applications are in the cloud, and most issues are on AWS. We have a central place to store and work on our enterprise-level architectures, regardless of where we are. Another reason was to select customer…

Easy to set up and had no issues with stability, but it's not a very friendly tool, and its database modeling and entity-relationship modeling functions need improvement
I didn't find any valuable features in Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect because you cannot use it for re-engineering. I wanted to re-engineer the database, and it was almost impossible. I couldn't find a way. One room for improvement in Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect is that it's not very friendly. Another room for improvement in the tool is that it doesn't enable you to import the metadata from a database very easily, so reverse engineering of a database was very difficult. Its database modeling and entity-relationship modeling functions need improvement. An additional feature I'd like to see in the next release of Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect is the re-engineering of databases into logical models, if that feature's not yet there, because I haven't checked.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution's most valuable feature is ArchiMate which I use daily."
"We have found the technical support to be helpful."
"There are a couple of things. Price is one thing, but we also like the scriptability of it. We got into scripting it and automating tasks with it, and it is super duper easy to do and helpful. The API has improved over the years. We automate everything, and I love the automation aspects of it."
"Its ability to reference and link to components from any diagram."
"Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect is very flexible and it is simple to define the metamodel. Additionally, it is lightweight on resources."
"It's like a repository. So far, we use it only for Information Modelling."
"The best thing about the tool is that its database is open."
"Features good reporting facilities coupled with a concrete database."
"There are a lot of features in Enterprise Architect. It allows us to take on a lot of tasks."
"Provides a single repository for all architecture work."

Cons

"The user-friendliness could be even better."
"The solution should allow easier access with enhanced customization options for web page DHTML."
"I would like it to be less of a general tool. Currently, it is not a Swiss army knife that can do everything. It is not specialized for our purposes. We are a civil engineering company. We build things. We work mostly in what is known as Infra world in the Netherlands, which comprises objects such as bridges, locks, and water management. We would like to see more focus on such types of projects. It would be nice if it has more specializations. At the moment, it is very generic, and you have to create everything yourself. Our focus is more on user requirement management, which is currently very basic. I would like to see a lot more functionality in this area. Its basic functions for adding user requirements are perfect, but we need more features. Currently, it has limited possibilities for our requirements. I would also like to see better contract management and have it managed in a certain way."
"Sparx can be a bit slow. If you are trying to design software architecture, sometimes we run into issues and need to refresh."
"The UI is a little bit outdated. It should be more fresh and clean."
"The window froze for five or ten seconds. You can click and click again and it takes a second to come up. It might have been specific to a version."
"I would like the system to more "intellectually" build a scheme, place icons, and connect lines on the schemes."
"No way to implement data integrity and referential integrity constraints."
"Even if there are web-based tools in the Enterprise Architecture tool ecosystem (like Prolaborate), the main modeling application is still a fat client application."
"Because its easy to create diagrams one needs to be vigilant on the housekeeping of orphaned fragments - I have written my own scripts to do this, maybe they are available now."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's Ultimate Plan costs $399 per year."
"It is very economical and low cost. You have to pay for a one-time license, and it is active forever."
"In terms of cost, Sparx EA is probably one of the cheapest tools I have ever used."
"There is no license required for this solution."
"The license for Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect is paid yearly, but I don't handle that area. It's good for its price, so I'm rating it a five out of five, but I'm not using it much. I also don't have information regarding additional costs apart from the standard licensing fees."
"Pricing and licensing are suitable even for small companies."
"The licensing is not as expensive as some of the other data modeling tools such as Erwin."
"We have an annual license, and it's very affordable."
"The pricing for ultimate version is steeply high."
