The tool leads to improvement in the performance of the backup infrastructure
Pros and Cons
  • "There are no limitations when it comes to the scalability feature of the product. You can scale up or scale down however much you want."
  • "When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support."

What is our primary use case?

Dell DD Boost is used together with Dell's appliances for areas like data domain and networking.

DD Boost is a very good functionality if you have machines or servers with a lot of data you don't want to send through a network. With DD Boost, you can use it as an application on the server itself before you send over the data. If you want to improve the speed and reduce the amount of data that is sent over the wires, you use DD Boost.

What needs improvement?

When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support. From an improvement perspective, the support could be made faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with DD Boost for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are no limitations when it comes to the scalability feature of the product. You can scale up or scale down however much you want. I rate the solution's scalability a nine out of ten.

Around 150 of my company's customers in Sweden use the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I was only working in the area of networking. I started to use DD Boost since it is a tool that is used in the networking area.

How was the initial setup?

The product was easy to deploy.

The product is deployed on the cloud.

My company's technicians were involved in the deployment process.

The deployment could be completed in a couple of hours.

My company had three technicians to take care of the deployment and who worked with Dell's support team if they faced problems.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing charges attached to the product. The price of the product is on a higher scale, meaning not everybody can afford it. Those who paid for the solution got a really nice solution to use.

What other advice do I have?

The valuable feature of the solution, which is critical for data protection strategies, stems from the fact that the use of the tool was to reduce the size of the backup window, meaning that instead of having to deal with an hours theory of backup, it could be reduced to an hour with the help of DD Boost.

The solution improved our company's data backup and replication tasks since we were able to do complete backups within a short window. The problem today is that the time that you have or use to do backup is becoming more and more limited, so it needs to get faster and faster. With the functionalities of DD Boost, the backup can be done very fast.

A scenario where the product has benefited my work stems from the fact that the product is primarily for my customers and not for me to use. My customers have enjoyed the benefits of the product by being able to get complete backup in a short time frame while being secured at the same time. If you can't do backup because of time constraints, then you are not secured. Being able to use the backup means you are secure, which is an advantage that DD Boost provides to its users.

I haven't used the product's deduplication technology to see its impact on our company's customers' storage efficiency, but I know that if you don't use the tool, then you may experience that without the solution, there is a reduced amount of storage space to save the data.

I highly recommend the product to those who plan to use it. The product is useful to shorten the time frame of the backup windows. It is a really stable product, which is good.

The measurable outcomes from integrating DD Boost into the systems in our customers' environments can be established by the fact that it was the most effective product on systems that took a long time to take care of the backup part. The system initially took eight hours to deal with the backup part but could later manage the same area in three hours with the use of DD Boost.

The performance of the backup infrastructure has improved since the implementation of the solution.

Overall, there is a need to have a complete backup to be secure if something happens so you can do the restoration. You can't do the backup work and restore work at a fast speed without DB Boost.

I rate the overall tool a nine out of ten.

Pros and Cons
  • "Scalable and stable solution for backup purposes, with good encryption and huge data conversion features."
  • "It would be good if the product could be useful not just for general backup. Its pricing is also expensive, and it can be a difficult application, particularly when you need to write a script for anything you would like to do."

What is our primary use case?

I'm using Dell EMC Data Domain Boost for backup purposes.

How has it helped my organization?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost has kept our data safe.

What is most valuable?

What I found most useful in Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is the encryption it provides. It exceeds 40x, and it can convert my data. It's a huge conversion.

What needs improvement?

It would be good if the product could be useful not just for general backup. I'm always using it for backup only. If I need any storage, I go for Dell EMC VMAX or Dell EMC VxRail, while for Dell EMC Data Domain Boost, the main purpose for me is for backup only.

The pricing for this solution is also expensive, so you have to look carefully at its pricing.

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost can also be a difficult application, particularly when you need to write a script for anything you would like to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Dell EMC Data Domain Boost for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I find Dell EMC Data Domain Boost stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is a scalable product.

How are customer service and support?

When Dell got EMC, I was facing a lot of problems with the technical support for this solution, but now, the problems have been solved. You can control the issues that may arise from Dell EMC Data Domain Boost. If I would rate support from one to five, with five being the highest, my current rating for it would be five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing.

What other advice do I have?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is on public cloud. I deal with the solution including VxRail, VMAX, and all types of storage from Dell EMC.

I'm rating Dell EMC Data Domain Boost ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Speeds up backups, easy to use, and installation is straightforward
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution with Data Domain (DD) to enhance the data backups of our databases and applications. It is a very popular solution around the world.

    What is most valuable?

The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have found the solution to be scalable.

We have approximately 10 people using this solution in my organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have been satisfied with the technical support.

    How was the initial setup?

    The installation is straightforward.

    What about the implementation team?

We have a team that does the implementation and maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

DD Boost comes built into DD or Avamar. However, to use DD Boost for enterprise is a separate license. For example, if you have Oracle, Linux, or Unix and you need to install DD Boost for Arman, then you need a separate license. Typically when you purchase the solution it is bundled and you either purchase a one or three-year license. The price for the solution is expensive but when comparing it to other solutions it is reasonably priced. However, the price could still be cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

If you want to manage your database backups, then you should use DD Boost for Enterprise applications.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Dell EMC Data Domain Boost a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Offers fast and efficient data restore and is stable
    Pros and Cons
    • "Data Domain is valuable, especially to restore data. For normal data, the restore from Data Domain is very efficient and fast."
    • "The experience of restoring VMware or Veeam Backup is difficult, when the backup you are using is a solution for backup, which is already having a deduplication. When you try to restore from Data Domain, it doesn't work perfectly, because Data Domain is already having a deduplication as well."

    What is most valuable?

Data Domain is valuable, especially for restoring data. For normal data, the restore from Data Domain is very efficient and fast.

    What needs improvement?

The experience of restoring VMware or Veeam Backup is difficult when the backup you are using is a  solution for backup, which is already having a deduplication. When you try to restore from Data Domain, it doesn't work perfectly, because Data Domain is already having a deduplication as well.

This is only a deduplication issue. If you are restoring databases with a normal backup, it will work very fast. However, if you are restoring your database at the deduplication by VM backup, then the deduplication for it will be very slow.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Domain for around seven or eight years, in different models.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The stability is there actually.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The problem with Data Domain is you have to size it to the right size for your workloads before you choose. Upgrading the platform is not that easy.

You can add some more shelves, but this will not give you that much capacity for your workload. You have to ensure that you study the workload well.

To be precise, it is not scalable if you are jumping from small to medium or from medium to large. Within the medium tier, however, it is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

Excellent. The technical support at EMC is one of the best I have known.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a bit complicated. It's a difficult task to set it up. After this, however, things go fairly smoothly. After you define the main things, there is no need to do anything else.

What other advice do I have?

Study the workload very well before you go into the sizing phase. You have to study your workloads, so you can anticipate them and avoid any unplanned workloads.

I would rate the solution as eight out of ten. It is quite sufficient but needs a little bit of improvement.

Can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization
    Pros and Cons
    • "DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services."
    • "Some competitors may not allow the use of DD Boost with their data management systems. The application process is not determined at the source site but on the estimation side."

What is our primary use case?

DD Boost offload processing tasks from the server to the Data Domain products. It enhances the backup process by providing the application's source and automation sites. This means servers' CPU and other resources are not heavily burdened during backups. All workloads are efficiently handled, improving the overall backup performance

How has it helped my organization?

DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services.

    What is most valuable?

Many backup processes start on the source site, and DD Boost can stack backups on the servers, optimizing backup storage utilization. All resources are utilized efficiently. Without such optimization, backup processes can lead to bottlenecks or excessive resource utilization, impacting server services.

    What needs improvement?

Some competitors may not allow the use of DD Boost with their data management systems. The application process is not determined at the source site but on the estimation side. If you use DD Boost with Data Domain on backups, standard value backup, any server or workload, a backup process, or server application servers, resources won't encounter any bottleneck issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using DD Boost for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. You can install any backup server whenever you want. 300 users are using this solution.

How are customer service and support?

You can handle the basic support by yourself. The level of support you require also depends on your technical team's quality and skill level. However, global support is available for DD Boost implementation and integrated solutions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    How was the initial setup?

DD Boost is designed to be compatible with various technologies and vendors. It is eligible for use with multiple applications, including Big Data domains, as it is a backup storage solution. DD Boost is straightforward, ensuring explicit integration with different backup software options. Whether utilizing competitors' software such as Commvault or IBM Spectrum Protect, DD Boost facilitates fast and efficient installation.

It's installed via the DHL plugin. We installed the AppServer, and some of the backup software vendors already included the plugin value installed on the backup software on the pickup server.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you enable DD boost and acquire the necessary license, data will be transferred directly to the Data Domain system at the destination site during the backup process. The workload or server resources involved in the backup won't be affected until a bottleneck occurs in the current environment. Improper configuration or implementation of DD Boost could potentially impact performance and the efficiency of backup and restore processes.

What other advice do I have?

The Data Domain has applications in technology. It's advantageous to have DD Boost integrated into the main order because it enhances the capabilities of the Data Domain. Boost can handle both backup and application processes efficiently. However, if you opt for Data Domain without Boost, there might be limitations on the installation side compared to using another vendor with different technologies.

Many backup software solutions support Data Domain, and it's straightforward to integrate. It only requires a plugin installed on the server side for backups.

DD Boost functionality varies depending on your backup software. Some backup software may offer it as a built-in feature or provide an easy-to-install plugin. Once enabled, it dynamically optimizes the backup process, improving efficiency. For instance, certain VPN software packages may already include this functionality.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
