The tool leads to improvement in the performance of the backup infrastructure
Pros and Cons
  • "There are no limitations when it comes to the scalability feature of the product. You can scale up or scale down however much you want."
  • "When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support."

What is our primary use case?

Dell DD Boost is used together with Dell's appliances for areas like data domain and networking.

DD Boost is a very good functionality if you have machines or servers with a lot of data you don't want to send through a network. With DD Boost, you can use it as an application on the server itself before you send over the data. If you want to improve the speed and reduce the amount of data that is sent over the wires, you use DD Boost.

What needs improvement?

When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support. From an improvement perspective, the support could be made faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with DD Boost for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are no limitations when it comes to the scalability feature of the product. You can scale up or scale down however much you want. I rate the solution's scalability a nine out of ten.

Around 150 of my company's customers in Sweden use the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I was only working in the area of networking. I started to use DD Boost since it is a tool that is used in the networking area.

How was the initial setup?

The product was easy to deploy.

The product is deployed on the cloud.

My company's technicians were involved in the deployment process.

The deployment could be completed in a couple of hours.

My company had three technicians to take care of the deployment and who worked with Dell's support team if they faced problems.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing charges attached to the product. The price of the product is on a higher scale, meaning not everybody can afford it. Those who paid for the solution got a really nice solution to use.

What other advice do I have?

The valuable feature of the solution, which is critical for data protection strategies, stems from the fact that the use of the tool was to reduce the size of the backup window, meaning that instead of having to deal with an hours theory of backup, it could be reduced to an hour with the help of DD Boost.

The solution improved our company's data backup and replication tasks since we were able to do complete backups within a short window. The problem today is that the time that you have or use to do backup is becoming more and more limited, so it needs to get faster and faster. With the functionalities of DD Boost, the backup can be done very fast.

A scenario where the product has benefited my work stems from the fact that the product is primarily for my customers and not for me to use. My customers have enjoyed the benefits of the product by being able to get complete backup in a short time frame while being secured at the same time. If you can't do backup because of time constraints, then you are not secured. Being able to use the backup means you are secure, which is an advantage that DD Boost provides to its users.

I haven't used the product's deduplication technology to see its impact on our company's customers' storage efficiency, but I know that if you don't use the tool, then you may experience that without the solution, there is a reduced amount of storage space to save the data.

I highly recommend the product to those who plan to use it. The product is useful to shorten the time frame of the backup windows. It is a really stable product, which is good.

The measurable outcomes from integrating DD Boost into the systems in our customers' environments can be established by the fact that it was the most effective product on systems that took a long time to take care of the backup part. The system initially took eight hours to deal with the backup part but could later manage the same area in three hours with the use of DD Boost.

The performance of the backup infrastructure has improved since the implementation of the solution.

Overall, there is a need to have a complete backup to be secure if something happens so you can do the restoration. You can't do the backup work and restore work at a fast speed without DB Boost.

I rate the overall tool a nine out of ten.

Enables faster secure data storage and has competitive pricing
Pros and Cons
  • "DD Boost is a proprietary technology of Dell, which helps to store the data faster and in a more secure way compared to open protocols."
  • "I'd rate the solution ten out of ten."
  • "If we talk about Dell backup software, there is room for improvement in areas such as backup from IBM operating systems, open-source products, and Office 365."
  • "If we talk about Dell backup software, there is room for improvement in areas such as backup from IBM operating systems, open-source products, and Office 365."

What is our primary use case?

Some of our customers use data domain models like 6400 and some have a higher model, 9400. We sell the Dell solution, and some customers upgrade their software quicker than others, like to version 7072.

We specialize in selling backup solutions to various organizations, including telecommunications and government sectors.

How has it helped my organization?

Boost has been quite good compared to traditional solutions based on, for example, virtual machines plus NAS storage, offering two, three, or four times faster backup and restore operations.

What is most valuable?

DD Boost is a proprietary technology of Dell, which helps to store the data faster and in a more secure way compared to open protocols.

What needs improvement?

It is more about backup software improvements rather than the data domain or DD Boost solutions. For example, Dell Technologies are struggling to back up Office 365 and some open-source hypervisors like Proxmox.

If we talk about Dell backup software, there is room for improvement in areas such as backup from IBM operating systems, open-source products, and Office 365.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for three years, I would say.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. The customer can upgrade even if they need more performance or storage capacity.

How are customer service and support?

Dell has a warehouse of spare parts. In general, if customers purchase next-business-day support and expect weekend support, they may complain if they did not buy options that include weekend support. I would rate it an eight out of ten. Sometimes customers complain. I am not the right person to ask for direct support since I am a reseller.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

If we talk about basic work, we need to install DD into the rack, connect all of it, and make the first setup. We can do it within a day, and then it depends on customer infrastructure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is competitive. The licensing model offers two options: per capacity and per host. With perpetual licenses and backend-type licenses where we license the deduplicated data, it is good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The closest competitor is HPE StoreOnce if we only talk about the deduplication level. In general, we could also use Commvault with the hyperscale clusters.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

Stable and scalable solution for backups and keeping data safe; offers good encryption and huge data conversions
Pros and Cons
  • "Scalable and stable solution for backup purposes, with good encryption and huge data conversion features."
  • "It would be good if the product could be useful not just for general backup. Its pricing is also expensive, and it can be a difficult application, particularly when you need to write a script for anything you would like to do."

What is our primary use case?

I'm using Dell EMC Data Domain Boost for backup purposes.

How has it helped my organization?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost has kept our data safe.

What is most valuable?

What I found most useful in Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is the encryption it provides. It exceeds 40x, and it can convert my data. It's a huge conversion.

What needs improvement?

It would be good if the product could be useful not just for general backup. I'm always using it for backup only. If I need any storage, I go for Dell EMC VMAX or Dell EMC VxRail, while for Dell EMC Data Domain Boost, the main purpose for me is for backup only.

The pricing for this solution is also expensive, so you have to look carefully at its pricing.

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost can also be a difficult application, particularly when you need to write a script for anything you would like to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Dell EMC Data Domain Boost for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I find Dell EMC Data Domain Boost stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is a scalable product.

How are customer service and support?

When Dell got EMC, I was facing a lot of problems with the technical support for this solution, but now, the problems have been solved. You can control the issues that may arise from Dell EMC Data Domain Boost. If I would rate support from one to five, with five being the highest, my current rating for it would be five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing.

What other advice do I have?

Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is on public cloud. I deal with the solution including VxRail, VMAX, and all types of storage from Dell EMC.

I'm rating Dell EMC Data Domain Boost ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Along with a simple initial setup phase, the solution offers valuable functions, like deduplication to its users
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup of DD Boost involves a simple procedure."
  • "Though the customer uses the product, they don't receive active support from DD Boost even though they pay for it."

What is our primary use case?

I use DD Boost with Veeam Backup in my company.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution is its deduplication functions.

What needs improvement?

The only issue that needs improvement in the solution stems from EMC DD Boost's cost of renewing support, which is quite expensive. Though the customer uses the product, they don't receive active support from DD Boost even though they pay for it.

The solution's technical support needs to improve the quality of their services.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using DD Boost for six to seven years. My company has a partnership with DD Boost.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a seven out of ten. The sizing part of the solution was done properly, so there was no need to tackle any scalability concerns.

Less than five people from the system side use the solution in our organization.

My company has around five administrators working with this solution.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the technical support a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of DD Boost involves a simple procedure.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

What about the implementation team?

I managed the installation phase of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My company must pay approximately 10,000 USD annually, making it an expensive product.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the overall solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

The speed the solution offers is very good. We like that the speeding up of data transfers is effective and easy.

It's stable and reliable.

It's scalable.

The solution is inexpensive.

What needs improvement?

We haven't had any issues. Our clients have been happy with the product overall.

I'd like the be able to deploy the solution on SAN backups.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very reliable. Its performance is good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. It's easy to expand.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't had any reason to talk to technical support. I've never dealt with them.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward and simple. It's not overly complex. We have many team members that can handle the deployment process.

What about the implementation team?

We can help out client handle the deployment. We don't need outside assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing depends on the business use case and on the projects.

It's not an expensive product.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a partner and reseller.

Our customers use the solution.

It's a good solution and quite stable. We can back up easily over fiber channels yet DDBoost can handle backups over LAN. I'd recommend it to others. It's not expensive and allows us to reduce the backup window considerably.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Enhanced data protection and storage efficiency with deduplication
Pros and Cons
  • "I haven't had any issues. It has been working for two years with no problems."
  • "It saves money because I don't need as much storage."
  • "The performance of the backup software with connection to DD Boost could be improved."
  • "It's a little slow, yet it's working."

What is our primary use case?

I am using it for a backup application that does backups to the Data Domain.

How has it helped my organization?

It saves money because I don't need as much storage. I can keep backups for half a year, protected by Data Domain from ransomware. This allows me to sleep quietly. Otherwise, I would need more storage.

What is most valuable?

I'm not sure about what specific features I'm using. I didn't choose it for DD Boost specifically. It is the protocol that works for the backup solution. The reason for choosing this solution is thanks to the deduplication and ransomware protection.

What needs improvement?

I'm not sure about what could be improved. Maybe the performance of the backup software with connection to DD Boost could be improved. It's a little slow, yet it's working.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any issues. It has been working for two years with no problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't needed scalability until now, so I haven't explored it yet. I can buy more licenses to add more storage, but it's just about buying a license and putting it in. There's enough disk space on the appliance to handle my needs.

How are customer service and support?

When I had an issue, I just called and they connected and fixed it if something was wrong.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It is simple if you know what you are doing. I took professional installation from people who configured it with Data Domain. They did it and knew how to do it, so I was involved in the configuration of DD Boost.

What about the implementation team?

I required integrators for setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a very high price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am working only with this appliance. I don't have experience with other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

If they have the budget to buy the system, I would recommend it.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Speeds up backups, easy to use, and installation is straightforward
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution with Data Domain (DD) to enhance the data backups of our databases and applications. It is a very popular solution around the world.

    What is most valuable?

The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have found the solution to be scalable.

We have approximately 10 people using this solution in my organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have been satisfied with the technical support.

    How was the initial setup?

    The installation is straightforward.

    What about the implementation team?

We have a team that does the implementation and maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

DD Boost comes built into DD or Avamar. However, to use DD Boost for enterprise is a separate license. For example, if you have Oracle, Linux, or Unix and you need to install DD Boost for Arman, then you need a separate license. Typically when you purchase the solution it is bundled and you either purchase a one or three-year license. The price for the solution is expensive but when comparing it to other solutions it is reasonably priced. However, the price could still be cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

If you want to manage your database backups, then you should use DD Boost for Enterprise applications.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Dell EMC Data Domain Boost a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises
