We have fully automated resource scheduling with our VMware clusters. We have taken recommendations on sizing that have saved hundred of gigabytes of RAM throughout our clusters.
Systems Administrator at a computer software company with 201-500 employees
We have fully automated resource scheduling with our VMware clusters.
What is most valuable?
How has it helped my organization?
Without having to worry about a host becoming over-utilized, we have been able to work on more important projects. We are able to be more efficient with our host resources, saving the business money.
What needs improvement?
A more robust reporting engine would be a huge boon to us. A bit better error messaging with Application Control Module would help during troubleshooting adding a new target.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been a Turbo customer since 2014.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
No, and their support was very quick and helpful to assist with major upgrades. In the end, it was easy enough that with a little Linux knowledge and the Turbo documentation, even major upgrades could be performed without having to contact support.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Turbo is very powerful, and does exactly what you tell it to do. If you configure it to be too aggressive to either efficiency or performance, your cluster might become unbalanced. We have had great stability keeping it slightly skewed towards efficiency vs performance.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No, we have one Turbo instance controlling multiple datacenters.
How are customer service and support?
Customer Service:
10/10 on customer support, as well as account management, could not be happier.
Technical Support:10/10 on technical support. If I encounter a complex issue, they escalate me to a developer resource who dives deeply to find a root cause.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
VMware's DRS didn't seem to balance our clusters very evenly. vROps made sizing recommendations that were just not correct. We tested Turbo and the recommendations were all on point and we are able to trust them.
How was the initial setup?
Very easy setup. OVA template, adding vCenters, making some groups, allowing our firewalls to let Turbo access everything and we were set.
What about the implementation team?
In-house team was easily able to install.
What was our ROI?
We've saved an entire ESXi host worth of RAM with Turbo.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This product is very competitively priced for all the automation it brings.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We actually purchased vROps but it wasn't enough.
What other advice do I have?
We really love Turbo and the time it saves us.

Senior Network Engineer at a educational organization with 1,001-5,000 employees
I let the product move machines to new hosts and change datastores as needed for best overall performance.
What is most valuable?
We like the option to create our own dashboards for each team member. Also the availability for Turbonomic to migrate my machines around in my environment makes my job easier.
How has it helped my organization?
I no longer have to keep my vSphere Client open to monitor constantly. I let the product move machines to new hosts and change datastores as needed for best overall performance. And all of this is based on best practice from Turbonomic and a few tweaks on our end.
What needs improvement?
The product needs tighter integration points with storage vendors, the mainstream top 5-6 are added but it would be nice to see more.
Additional reporting and alerting would be great additions as well.
For how long have I used the solution?
A little over a year, solution works great!
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
We had this software up and running within a few minutes. We got followup help from the Turbonomic team and everything went smooth.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
At first we ran into some workload issues where the software managed items we didn't want included; we were able to make adjustments to correct this issue. At times the VM-OVA has to be restarted due to changes within product.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
None at all, we have a lot of hosts and VMs and the OVA file we deployed scaled perfectly.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Top notch customer service. They follow up with you as needed to make sure the product works as expected, send emails when new updates are available and support has resolved any issues we ran into immediately.
As stated above, support has always been quick to assist and resolve any issues we ran into.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
No previous solution. At the time no other vendors offered a similar product, other than Veeam.
How was the initial setup?
Straightforward, took less than an hour to completely install and configure baselines. Within a couple days all tweaks were in place and it ran great.
What about the implementation team?
In-house with assistance from Turbonmic support team. Smooth process.
What was our ROI?
At this time our largest ROI is not having to spend constant hours watching our VM environment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Cost effective solution that works.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did not.
What other advice do I have?
Keep up the great work and keep the new features coming. We are excited to see what happens in the next 12 months with advancements.

System Architect at a tech vendor with 501-1,000 employees
It has automated move and workload placement.
What is most valuable?
Automated move and workload placement.
Resource planning.
How has it helped my organization?
Planning for capacity is much easier now. It is relatively simple to model growth based upon expected company growth for a given cycle, allowing us to acquire the necessary hardware in time to meet the demand.
What needs improvement?
The interface could use an update. Additional options in data views and dashboards would be welcome. We would also like to see expansion made in the UCS tools that they provide, to allow viewing the entire UCS environment and not just the equipment that hosts a hypervisor.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have used Turbonomic (VMTurbo) for about 3 years. It replaced VCOps at the time.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
None. The solution was easy to implement although we did wait a while to allow it to perform changes on its own.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We were affected by a bug in a release. This did result in unplanned downtime for us. We have modified our policies on updates/patches as a result.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
None. The software was been able to keep pace with our environment as it has grown and the licensing model allows us to true up yearly.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Excellent. Both the sales and support staff have been very accommodating but not suffocating.
Technical Support:Excellent. We have been aligned with the proper resources to analyze and provide solutions to the problems we have encountered. The responses from tech support have been transparent and they have provided as much information as possible to be sure we are satisfied.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
VMware vCenter Operations - prior to the VRealize operations incarnation.VCOps provided additional metric data and heat maps to gain additional insight into our VMware installation, but we were still left to decide what this data meant and how to improve our performance. Turbonomic makes plain English suggestions on how to optimize our install base.
How was the initial setup?
The setup was simple, with the deployment of a virtual appliance. Updates are similarly easy. The only issue is the time necessary for Turbonomic to observe the environment before it can provide actionable data.
What about the implementation team?
In house. The solution did not seem intimidating enough to require engagement of an outside resource. That being said, we have not implemented all of the features of Turbonomic either. Perhaps with a Vendor would would have had a greater feature set in place.
What was our ROI?
Our ROI occurred in less than 6 months by allowing us to avoid a costly server upgrade that was planned for parts of our VMware infrastructure.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Turbonomic was able to accommodate our perhaps unique needs in purchasing. Capital expenditures are easier for our team to make versus subscriptions Operating expenditures. Turbonomic offered both models and made it easy for us to even switch between them.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We had a prior installation of VCOperations. We did not feel we were getting real value from that installation - or at least that the release of vCOPS that we were on was not providing value.
What other advice do I have?
Turbonomic was positioned perfectly to take advantage of a lack of metrics and tooling that was available for VMware at the time. Their tools were superior to even those provided by VMware. The market has since caught up, and there are many more competitors in this space. Turbonomic will need to continue to innovate and compound upon what makes them unique to stand out.

Nice review. We use Turbonomic as well and have vMotions automated. We cannot automate storage due to SLAs and performance metrics. Also there are many 1:1 VM to datastore ratios which I am slowly changing.
