Though the tool deals with areas like data warehousing and dashboards, it fails to offer good support
Pros and Cons
  • "There are a lot of functions in the product, including a drill-down functionality and level-based hierarchies that are very attractive."
  • "From an improvement perspective, the technical team should be able to provide more accurate answers by taking into consideration the context of the issues faced by users."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my company to deal with areas like data warehousing, dashboards, KPIs, reporting, and dimension types.

What is most valuable?

There are a lot of functions in the product, including a drill-down functionality and level-based hierarchies that are very attractive. Though the tool offers a parent-child hierarchy, I use level-based hierarchies as they have very good functionality. The tool offers a good option known as action links to help with the linking of reports and to deal with master-detail reports. If you want to see the sales from the last year, the previous month, the previous quarter, or a day ago, the tool is helpful with the very good functionalities it offers. In the area of ML, functionalities like forecasting and other features should work properly.

What needs improvement?

I have witnessed some new features in Oracle OBIEE 12c related to functions like forecasting, clustering, outliers, and trends, despite the fact that such functions are difficult to use in the tool. It would have been easier to use such functionalities on Oracle Analytics Cloud. In Oracle OBIEE, users should be able to use the tool easily with the help of drag-and-drop functionalities. Though Oracle OBIEE might be helpful from a technical perspective, it is not a user-friendly product for business users, especially for those who are not aware of technical syntax.

Forecasting, trends, outliers, and other features should work like a drag-and-drop functionality since such functionalities are currently difficult to use.

The graphical representation and the alignment of the report should be very easy. The settings related to the properties of graphs, like lines and height, are areas where there are some difficulties, which can be hectic for the technical and business users of the solution, making it an area that should be made easy by Oracle.

The features that are available on OAC should be made available in Oracle OBIEE in future releases.

Oracle OBIEE should work to make areas like configuration settings and deployment easy for users. I have worked in an industry for six to seven years using Oracle OBIEE, where I have seen how the management was not happy with the product and wanted to go with some other tool. I had to convince my previous management that there are many good features in Oracle OBIEE and that it is important to use products related to Oracle, like OAC, and not opt for tools like Power BI. If you use Oracle products and Oracle Database, then it is important to try Oracle Analytics.

From an improvement perspective, the technical team should be able to provide more accurate answers by taking into consideration the context of the issues faced by users. The support team also needs to provide resolutions faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle OBIEE for five to six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Around 20 to 50 people in my company used to use the product.

How are customer service and support?

I had raised some very difficult queries in the past with Oracle's technical support team to get some solutions.

The queries that I raised with Oracle's support team were related to Oracle OBIA and Oracle OBIEE. Though I had raised a lot of queries and SRs, there was always a delay in responses from the support team's end. Basically, Oracle's support team took a lot of time to solve my queries since I remember creating and raising a lot of SRs.

I rate the technical support a three out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

How was the initial setup?

I rate the product's initial setup phase a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup process, and ten is an easy setup process. If you talk about Oracle Cloud Analytics, I rate the product's initial setup phase a seven or eight out of ten.

The solution is deployed on the cloud. I have used OAC in the past, but for my current project, I use Microsoft Azure. Within two or three months, I will be back to using OAC.

Oracle OBIEE's configuration settings and deployment areas are much more difficult than those of products like OAC and Power BI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I work in the manufacturing industry, and the company where I work has the license to use Oracle OBIEE.

Compared with the other products in the market, I feel Oracle OBIEE is an expensive product. I don't exactly know the cost of Oracle OBIEE because it is an area that is taken care of by the management. The charges might be based on a per-user or per-module basis.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to those who plan to use it, especially if Oracle enhances its functionalities and offers good support along with better features.

I rate the overall product a six out of ten.

Enables us to gather, store and visualize enterprise data
Pros and Cons
  • "I have not personally used any such products related to this service, however based on the popular opinion, Microsoft Power BI is more popular. We have never switched from this software due to infrastructure and license related costs. However, my team acknowledges that the Power BI is much more enhanced and includes features that are easier to use, including its drag and drop features. I am not sure, if OBIEE has these features, due to lack of updated versions."
  • "The pricing of the solution should be bettered."

What is our primary use case?

We mainly use Oracle OBIEE mainly for business purposes, which include analysis and intelligence-based decision making.

What is most valuable?

I have not personally used any such products related to this service, however based on the popular opinion, Microsoft Power BI is more popular. We have never switched from this software due to infrastructure and license related costs. However, my team acknowledges that the Power BI is much more enhanced and includes features that are easier to use, including its drag and drop features. I am not sure, if OBIEE has these features, due to lack of updated versions.

What needs improvement?

The pricing of the solution should be bettered.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle OBIEE for the past 7 years, but the version I am using is not the latest in the market.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've never encountered any downtime issues with Oracle OBIEE. It's been working smoothly, and it's quite reliable. I would rate it 8 out of 10.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling the product is not difficult and I would rate it 8 out of 10.

How are customer service and support?

The experience is mixed, since it is sometimes helpful and sometimes, it is challenging. In our business, we act as intermediaries between users and supports and this has led to huge issue on our part. We've created several SRs seeking help, but in some cases, there's been no response or resolution from Oracle. However, please note that we haven’t used them for OBIEE product specifically.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

In my opinion, Ooracle has better documentation for installation, however, in our case, migration is a difficult challenge which involves lots of arrangements and importing and exporting of large amount of data. Even though I am not a technical person, I believe that upgrading on-premises requires creating a new installation, while on the cloud, it's simpler. I'm not exactly sure about the process, but these are the discussions I've had with my team.

What about the implementation team?

Around five to six key individuals, mainly senior executives like CFO, CIO, and CEO, use Oracle OBIEE in our team. We handle maintenance internally and don't rely on third parties for troubleshooting or deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We bought a one-time license for Oracle OBIEE, and annually pay the support fee. When it comes to pricing, it's quite expensive.

I would rate the price of this solution 2 out of 10, towards the expensive side.

What other advice do I have?

To recommend Oracle OBIEE overall is a challenging task. I haven’t explored its multiple versions, including cloud ones. In my experience, on-prem solutions have little support from Oracle. But in my personal opinion and based on my experience, I would surely recommend it if the users understand the product. It is relatively easy to implement. During the initial implementation, there were features we weren't aware of, but as we progressed and encountered new cases and business modules, we were able to implement them smoothly.

I would rate it 7 out of 10.

I have been using Oracle OBIEE for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle OBIEE is a stable enough solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Throughout the versions we have used of Oracle OBIEE, they have been scalable.

We have more than 20 people using the solution. We have plans to increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good from Oracle OBIEE.

I rate the support from Oracle OBIEE a four out of five.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used Microsoft Power BI. I have used different solutions due to the company's requirements I worked.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Oracle OBIEE is straightforward. Once it is deployed then we can add other modules. The installation process took approximately two hours.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation of Oracle OBIEE can be done in-house. If the company implementing the solution is not experienced then a consultant can be used.

We have multiple technical staff working on Oracle OBIEE. However, the exact number is based on the needs of the project. In our previous project, we had three to four technical staff that was needed; in the current project, we have more than 20.

Poor performance and difficult installation, but the price is reasonable
Pros and Cons
  • "They were reasonable in terms of price."
  • "The performance and the complex setup are the main reason for switching to Qlik Sense."

What needs improvement?

We were disappointed with Oracle OBIEE, because of the performance.

In terms of an analytical tool, it is quite outdated. End-users want to receive results quickly and to be able to view millions of rows of data in a matter of seconds. OBIEE was unable of doing so because of the way it was modeled and developed. It requires it to go to the database, run the SQL, and then fetch the result for each query. That procedure took a long time to complete.

There are a variety of different in-memory tools available; the data is loaded into the server's RAM or memory, and all requests, including data requests, are served from the RAM, making it extremely fast.

If you look at Qlik Sense or Tableau, or perhaps some other products on the market, such as Power BI, you'll notice that they have all of the data in RAM.

The performance and the complex setup are the main reason for switching to Qlik Sense.

For how long have I used the solution?

We had been using Oracle OBIEE for around eight years when we decided to stop using it six months ago. We switched to Qlik Sense.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Performance was the primary reason for switching from OBIEE to Qlik Sense.

How are customer service and support?

We have never had any contact with technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Oracle has a number of products that we use. We are a large supporter of Oracle.

How was the initial setup?

OBIEE's overall setup is really complex because it relies on Oracle Forms, the Oracle Fusion technology, which requires a middleware.

We require both the front-end and the back-end. It was really difficult to manage the entire setup. Dealing with OBIEE was tough in some circumstances when we had to make infrastructure-related modifications.

The entire setup is extremely complex, and troubleshooting any errors is incredibly difficult due to the large number of logs generated by the WebLogic Server.

Setup is really difficult, which is an area where they are lacking.

If you only consider Tableau, Qlik Sense, or Power BI, where you will simply download the software, all you have to do is apply it if you have an enterprise license. It's incredibly simple to install and configure these products. It's very easy compared to OBIEE.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They were reasonable in terms of price. I wouldn't say they were expensive. Pricing was adequate. It's comparable to the current technology we're using, Qlik Sense.

We never had any issues with the pricing of Oracle OBIEE.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Oracle OBIEE a five out of ten.

An extremely easy-to-use solution that needs to improve its customer support
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle OBIEE is very easy to use. Looking at analytics, I think they have come a long way by adding new features like visualization, which is really cool."
  • "Oracle products have a lot of complications...Oracle has a history of not really providing great support."

What is our primary use case?

In my company, they use Oracle ERP. So they build reports based on ERP tables. So, basically, my job is to create subject areas for the client so that they can play around with the subject areas. And sometimes, we develop reports based on the subject areas.

What is most valuable?

Oracle OBIEE is very easy to use. Looking at analytics, I think they have come a long way by adding new features like visualization, which is really cool. Also, I don't have experience with really other products in the market.

What needs improvement?

Improvements are something I think they have pretty much done. They have improved many areas, like adding visualization and all that, by making it easy. So, any business analyst can play around with it without much knowledge. I think Oracle OBIEE is going step by step.

Oracle needs to improve its technical support. If they can improve in that area, it will be nice. Oracle products have a lot of complications. And sometimes what happens is, especially since I work on Oracle ERP. So when they release some modules, I don't know what kind of testing they do, but there are a lot of complications. And we break our heads and eventually end up with Oracle support because only Oracle support can solve those issues because it's software-related. So when you open a ticket, it depends on where that ticket goes. Sometimes it goes to a knowledgeable person, and then your life becomes easy. Generally, it won't end up there. So those are the things that Oracle has to improve in its support area. They have to improve significantly in that area because I see a lot of guys moving away because of that reason.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have some experience with Oracle OBIEE. As of now, I have one year of experience. I am a customer, but sometimes we enter into partnerships with Oracle to develop certain ERP products. So, we developed Contract Lifecycle Management along with Oracle, and that product is in the market now, and a lot of government agencies are using it. We are not resellers since Oracle owns the products, but we help them develop the CLM module within ERP.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution depends on how much data. Right now, I don't have the scope to look into that kind of environment with a large data scale. Maybe people working in banks, like those who operate worldwide, with a lot of data, can speak on the solution's stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability, especially considering its availability on the cloud, I think, is fine.

How are customer service and support?

Oracle has a history of not really providing great support. I rate the technical support a five out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I'm a developer, so I don't feel much complexity in the solution's initial setup. So, I will have to step into a user's shoes to see what complexity is involved in the setup phase. I think that there are three areas, in which one area is to connect to the database and create your own use and then drag that view into a middle layer. The middle layer is the data modeling layer, where you join different tables, and regarding such technicalities, if I look at them from a user perspective, it's a little difficult for them, which I think is solved with visualization by dragging, dropping and visualizing how the data looks and all that stuff. So Oracle OBIEE has tried its best to make the solution easier for users. Even though I try to look at the user's perspective, my mindset is that of a developer, so it is easy for me. I think Oracle OBIEE is doing a good job.

What other advice do I have?

Since I am a bit impressed with Oracle OBIEE, I rate the overall solution a seven out of ten.

Flexible and has better dashboards and data utilization
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Oracle OBIEE is interactive reporting because it allows better analysis versus conventional reporting, especially on the data warehouse side."
  • "An area for improvement is that Oracle pushes more users to Oracle BI Publisher rather than emphasizing Oracle OBIEE for reporting. The pricing for Oracle OBIEE could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

My use case for Oracle OBIEE is reporting, particularly for analytics. I use its dashboards and various reporting for data management. BIApps is also aligned with Oracle OBIEE, a ready-made application plugged into multiple modules for data management, finance, etc.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Oracle OBIEE is interactive reporting because it allows better analysis versus conventional reporting, especially in the data warehouse side, where my company has more than ten years of experience.

I also found the dashboards, KPIs, and data utilization better in Oracle OBIEE.

Oracle OBIEE is also more flexible because you can add dimensions and customizations to it on-premises versus cloud solutions.

What needs improvement?

An area for improvement is that Oracle pushes more users to Oracle BI Publisher rather than emphasizing Oracle OBIEE for reporting. Oracle is promoting Oracle BI Publisher as a reporting solution while introducing Oracle OBIEE into the ERP side.

In terms of data warehousing and getting on-premises reports, you need to use the Oracle Analytics Server, for example, to fetch the data rather than doing it on Oracle OBIEE, which is another area for improvement.

Oracle has more control over the data grid on the cloud versus Oracle OBIEE deployed on-premises, which is a drawback because deploying on the cloud gives you less flexibility in terms of customizations, adding dimensions, etc.

The pricing for Oracle OBIEE could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have expertise in Oracle OBIEE, as I've been using it for more than eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle OBIEE is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle OBIEE is highly scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I'm very satisfied with the technical support provided by Oracle for Oracle OBIEE.

How was the initial setup?

For a customized deployment for Oracle OBIEE, the end user has to let me take care of reporting instead of the user adding custom dimensions and fact tables in the data grid level or business model. The deployment process is a replication. It's more of a repetition of processes.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented Oracle OBIEE, so one staff is enough for its implementation. I also implemented the BIApps at the time. However, I also had the help of four consultants during the Oracle OBIEE implementation, mainly financial and supply chain consultants and a database administrator.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The company had twenty-five Oracle OBIEE licenses and never expanded. Price-wise, the solution is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

My company is moving from Oracle OBIEE to SAP Analytics soon. It's been decided.

I will recommend Oracle OBIEE to others over SAP Analytics, though my company is switching to SAP Analytics. If I have to choose between Oracle OBIEE and Oracle Analytics Server, I'll go with Oracle Analytics Server.

My rating for Oracle OBIEE is eight out of ten. It's more user-friendly than Microsoft Power BI and has excellent scalability and technical support. The solution was introduced here in the Middle East in 2009. Still, it seems everyone on Oracle OBIEE is forced to move to Oracle Analytics Cloud when most people here have expertise on Oracle OBIEE. Everyone has started moving to the cloud, so Oracle Analytics Cloud will soon grow its user base.

A solution that is highly reliable and stable, ensuring trouble-free daily operations for its users
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle OBIEE is a scary and stable product since it is a strong and well-created tool... In short, the solution is stable since it works properly every day."
  • "The drawback with the tool is that though it is well-created, its users are under-trained to use it."

What is our primary use case?

My company utilizes Oracle OBIEE, and we have a dedicated local development team responsible for preparing various cases. The data sources we use are locally based, and while we are unsure of their exact nature, they are primarily used for analytics and monitoring purposes. It's important to note that our monitoring is not in real-time but rather involves analyzing past data.

What is most valuable?

Oracle seems to be a better-developed and well-created tool than Microsoft Power BI. However, Oracle is a bit complicated, especially for its users. So. I'm a part of the IT team that is involved in the configuration of these BI tools. As a member of the IT team responsible for configuring these BI tools, we aim to cater to both management and KPI areas where users only need to view data on their screens and those who require BI solutions like Oracle OBIEE for their daily tasks. While Microsoft's tool is comparatively easier to use, we are struggling to train or show users how to use the Oracle tool. Nonetheless, Oracle is a tool closer to our company's management.

What needs improvement?

Training is needed to be provided to Oracle OBIEE's potential users since it is a complicated tool. The potential users of Oracle OBIEE need to possess some IT awareness to be able to operate it. The drawback with the tool is that though it is well-created, its users are under-trained to use it.

Since Oracle OBIEE is an on-premise solution, I face many limitations, and this is also one of the issues that Oracle needs to address in the future. Moving to the cloud is a decision that would make the solution much more efficient than it is currently.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Oracle OBIEE for more than a year. I am not sure about the version of the solution I use. I am a customer who uses the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle OBIEE is a scary and stable product since it is a strong and well-created tool, but it can be heavy on our company's systems compared to Microsoft's tools. In short, the solution is stable since it works properly every day.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution seems to be more suitable for enterprise-sized companies that are involved in serious businesses. At the same time, Oracle OBIEE is not a solution for users not used to working with such tools.

Our company has not been able to make any enhancements to Oracle OBIEE. However, the process would be relatively easy as we can easily add data sources. The reports are also simple to create. While I am unsure whether we have any servers for balancing at this moment, scaling up seems like a realistic and easy option for Oracle OBIEE.

How are customer service and support?

Our company has a local support team, and in the past, we have only contacted the official Oracle support team for the solution's setup process. We haven't needed to reach out to them for anything beyond that. Even though we don't ask for any technical help from the solution's support team, they are always available to attend to all our queries.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup process for the solution was done for us by one of the local vendors, and they were able to do it quickly as they were professionals.

What other advice do I have?

Before I recommend Oracle OBIEE to another person, I would ask them about their IT background since it is very crucial for the person planning to use the solution to possess knowledge of IT systems, how data is transferred, and what data types are to be able to use the tool. I would definitely recommend the solution to others if they are well-versed in the technicalities of the IT industry. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Interactive analysis and easy-to-read report layouts are the most valuable features of the solution
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable and scalable solution."
  • "They should make the dashboard more intuitive."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for reporting purposes. We use it to generate interactive and format-based reports and to print and export them in an Excel file.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable feature is interactive analysis. Also, the layout or design of the report is easy to understand as it is similar to Excel.

What needs improvement?

They should make the dashboard more intuitive.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. But, once in a while, it needs to restart due to memory issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. We have 120 users of the solution in our organization.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is straightforward. It takes a day for deployment and requires a small team of two.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house while doing the proof of concept.

What was our ROI?

The solution's ROI is good if you have published it on WebLogic, as it needs a very slim setup to work fine.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have to pay for the licenses. But, if developers want to try out technology to get proof of concept, they allow them to do it. There are no additional costs, but there might be some charges for the Java feature.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to others as it is a good product. It's an antique product from the Oracle vendor, and they are known for being one of the top IDBMS.

I rate the solution as an eight out of ten.
