Its ability to build, very quickly, very complicated models. In our case, we use for this modeling for the calculation of cost allocation and transfer price and the like. It is very helpful. It's a really powerful tool in modeling creation.

Board of Management with 501-1,000 employees
Enables us to build complex models very quickly and helps with data visualization
Pros and Cons
- "Its ability to build, very quickly, very complicated models."
- "Improvement in collaboration, between that and publishing of reports and publishing of models."
What is most valuable?
How has it helped my organization?
It has helped us to implement the accounting management system and provide a very comprehensive solution for this. Also, I already mentioned cost allocation system, transfer pricing.
It's also very helpful in visualization of the data from our operation systems. Because we are a bank, data creation is very important for us, so it's another model.
It covers many things, including current exposure, the coverage of loans, etc. In these areas, it's the most comprehensive and most helpful of the tools we're using, based on this platform.
What needs improvement?
I would say it's not negative, but it's an issue because we also use other tools, like SAP BusinessObjects, for a long period of time, which is another product in the business intelligence area.
Improvement in collaboration, between that and publishing of reports and publishing of models. Probably that could be more comprehensive, from my point of view.
For how long have I used the solution?
Four or five years, already.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Yes it's stable. Not 100% but, really, compared to other products, it's a stable product. It's controllable. And the maintenance received from local partners is very good, at a very high level.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No problems.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have both technical support and support in the development model from the local partner of QlikView. I would rate it at a very high level.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Because the majority of BI tools are focusing on processing a significant mass of data, we were looking for a more analytical tool with the possibility to quickly build models, and we found it. On the other hand, QlikView has some constraints due to the architecture, so it may not be applicable for millions and millions and millions of data records because it requires significant expenses for the hardware. But, as an analytical tool, it's very interesting.
How was the initial setup?
It was very easy because we started by using the free version of QlikView. After that, we bought everything, including a server license. So, we had no problems with this.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
At that time, we already had BusinessObjects as a BI tool in our bank, with SAP Crystal Reports, for example, as a part of BusinessObjects. At that time, in the market, there were no alternatives in this respect, so our choice was very precise because already we used this tool and we decided to buy it.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this product. We have a lot of reference meetings because we were the first bank in the country to implement it, this platform. So we're meeting our colleagues who are working not only in the banking industry but from telecom, from the pharmaceutical industry, etc. We recommend it.
It's one of the best products in this segment, for BI, for the automation of analytical activity within the bank or within the company. It doesn't 100% cover everything, but in the area, it works very well.

Yet another possibility with QlikView.
I sometimes wonder, haven’t we seen all the possibilities for QlikView?
The answer is simple – NO!
The other day a client of my, asked if I could build some kind of a data warehouse monitor upon their enterprise data warehouse.
This client has a SQL Server data warehouse with QlikView as a frontend. The data in the data warehouse are updated in parallel processes, so data for each country are loaded in different time of the day. They also do ad hoc updates of the data warehouse if needed.
They have a nice log table in the SQL Server data warehouse, telling us when each ETL step is updated, and if there have been any errors in a step. However, reading this log is not that easy. Therefore, they asked if QlikView could visualize the data in some kind of a data warehouse monitor.
My idea was, why not create a one sheet overview, showing each of the component in the data warehouse architecture and visualize this? I wanted to use red and green icons and arrows showing witch part of the data warehouse is currently under update and if there were any errors to take care of.
I ended with this lovely solution:
I have used text-boxes with images as background, color expressions and conditional show of objects.
Simple, very useful and hopefully a good inspiration.

Impressions from Tableau in comparison with QlikView
I had the chance to get to Tableau Customer Conference in early November 2012 and thanks to exceptionally good organization of the event I was able to greatly enhance my picture of Tableau (which I first reviewed 2 years ago) and get answers to some questions.
Below are my impressions from Tableau (which I haven't used in real projects yet) in comparison with QlikView -- tool I've been working with since 2009.
First thing I'd like to tell -- starting from version 8 Tableau can honestly be considered a truly mature product -- a big difference with what I saw two years ago. It's a smartly designed, feature-full and powerful analytic tool which is especially good for ad hoc query and analysis (Q&A). Prior to Tableau I considered BusinessObjects WebIntelligence to be the best Q&A tool on the market. However, in my picture of BI world this honorable title now belongs to Tableau.
Here is what I liked (not in order of importance):
- State-of-art data visualization makes Tableau outstanding in the crowd of BI suites. Tableau people talk about "being creative with data" and it's easy to believe in this while looking at clean and elegant Tableau dashboards. By the way, in French tableau has two meanings -- painting and table. Artwork and data. Excellent match of brand and product concept.
- Drag-n-drop authoring as cornerstone of analysis and design processes. That's what WebIntelligence was good at, but Tableau makes it even better, simpler and easier. Sadly QlikView has almost nothing to offer here -- fields still...
