To understand which is better - Nutanix AHV or VMware vSphere - you need to do a product comparison. Both products support hypervisors. However, Nutanix supports some of the most popular ones and more options than VMware does. While Nutanix supports VMware ESXi, Nutanix AHV and Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware only supports VMware ESXi. Additionally, with Nutanix, AHV virtualization is included at no cost and with VMware, virtualization licenses are sold separately.
In terms of architectural design, Nutanix has a modern web-scale architecture and VMware has legacy SAN technologies that are retrofitted into software. The native file storage is also different for each product; Nutanix has file storage through Nutanix files whereas VMware has file storage via File Services.
